When Wayne Rooney scored at Goodison last
weekend, people queued up to tell us why, actually, this is why you don’t write off the man. The last 2 games have demonstrated that, in his current guise, disappointment is the rule, not exception.

It’s not just that Rooney is offering nothing to
United’s attack; he is hampering it significantly.
Martial, Mata and Herrera can do all they can to take attacks so far, but at some point their team-mate needs to get involved. Then all promise turns to dust.

It is as if Rooney is playing with lead weights under
his shirt, labouring around the opposition half like a
35-year-old League Two striker telling everyone
who’ll listen that he’s still got it. He completed nine
passes in the first half, and gave the ball away
seven times. There is an increasingly familiar Old
Trafford groan reserved for a Rooney pass
straight into touch. It is becoming the soundtrack
of his decline.

The bizarre thing about Rooney is just how much goodwill he retains from those within the game, he is effectively immune to criticism. Here is his game in numbers: No shots on target, No chances created. A passing accuracy of 55% (the lowest on the pitch). Lost possession 28 times (highest on the pitch). One touch in the opposition penalty area.

Yet the only reaction from Gary Neville was to
twice praise Rooney for his defensive work, while
Martin Tyler remarked that he was “defensively
responsible at 30”. For a striker, that should be
the ultimate damnation by faint praise. The person with the most faith is Van Gaal, who still starts Rooney to the detriment of the team. Depay has struggled to settle in during his early months in England, but at least with Depay, age provides reason for patience.

More importantly, playing Depay on the left would
allow Martial to operate as a central striker. For a manager who demands movement from his forwards, it is difficult to see how dropping Rooney wouldn’t assist United’s creativity. Van
Gaal must surely now be at least considering that
option.

In terms of this game, the biggest crime was that
Rooney stayed on until the final whistle. He may
once have been United’s magic man, the player
who could conjure something out of nothing to win
you the game, but that time has passed. He was
a 90-minute passenger.

“Sir, I have to talk every week about Rooney,”
said United’s manager to a journalist in his post-
match press conference. “Why? I don’t give any
opinion. Sick of it. You have your opinion, write
it.” Not as sick as some United fans are at the
free ride given to the captain.

When having faith that Rooney could rediscover his greatness, bear this question in mind: What did he excel at? The 3 most obvious responses to that
question are pace, power and positive aggression.
Not only do all now look lost, but these are
impossible characteristics to switch on and off.
You can’t just decide to have more pace or add
ten times more power, and the aggression in
Rooney’s game has been reduced to swearing in
the direction of the officials. He has become a
parody of the jaded striker, a brightness dulled by
the rigours of his career. He is the old fighter still
stepping into the ring but now being punched from
rope to rope.

So the question to Rooney’s backers is this: What
are you waiting for? Rooney isn’t naturally fit
enough to regain his missing athleticism. He’s
played too many career games to find the spark associated with his early years at United. He has never been the type of striker who you would expect to redefine his style in order to prolong his career. It’s all very sad, but there’s a shell of a player where Wayne Rooney used to be. Van Gaal is one of few who must still have faith, and even that is waning.

ANCELOTTI DENIES BAYERN MUNICH INTEREST: I CANNOT STAND THEIR DOMINANCE
The former AC Milan and Real Madrid boss feels a
lack of stimulation watching the German
champions due to the total absence of competition
for the Bundesliga crown
Carlo Ancelotti has appeared to rule himself out of
contention for the Bayern Munich job, saying
the lack of competition they face for the
Bundesliga title makes it difficult for him to enjoy
watching them.
The Italian has been without a club since departing
Real Madrid at the end of the 2014-15 season,
and has been linked to the Bayern post with no
renewal for incumbent coach Pep Guardiola -
whose contract is due to expire next June - in
sight.
Nevertheless, the German champions won their
1000th Bundesliga game on Saturday, defeating
Cologne 4-0 to keep both their challenge for a
record fourth Bundesliga crown and a 100 per cent
record from 10 league games this season intact.
But Ancelotti suggested it is precisely the
Bavarians' absolute superiority at domestic level that could deter him from taking up the coaching
role at Allianz Arena.
"Bayern will win the Bundesliga without even
taking their hands out their pockets," Ancelotti told
La Gazzetta dello Sport.
"I must confess that I cannot enjoy Bayern's
games.
"There is simply too little real competition."
Ancelotti previously confirmed he will be looking
to return to coaching soon, but admitted he would
prefer it to be a club level rather than with a
national team.
"I just like to be on the pitch every day and have
close contact with the players," he added.

I wonder what it will take for the Rooney defending panel to see that Rooney is gone.
If the damning evidence isn't enough to convince anyone, with or without stats, I don't know how people sleep at night telling barefaced lies about a washed up player to themselves and the world.
One of them gave me the guarantee that Rooney would score 20 goals this season. He has how many three months in? Still watching sha.

neville, scholes & hargreaves know better than to openly criticise the england captain. no TV pundit is actually allowed to criticise the england captain. these guys are told what to say. roy keane said that much long time ago that they all read from the scripts.

if a foreign player has been as pathetic as rooney has been in the last 18 months, the criticism would be through the roof now. falcao of last season was better than the current shyte rooney is serving & yet rooney is immune to sitting on the bench.

look into the mirror & see the obvious bias in british punditry.

They don't know jack.
If anything it's the opinion of former players that is most suspect.
Jamie Carragher prophesied that no player outside Chelsea could get into that squad at the start of this season. Neville claimed he didn't see anybody challenging Chelsea for the title.
Do we need to go back to Peles prediction about an African nation winning the World Cup before the end of last century?

What I see in the above mentioned blokes are people too scared to criticize one of their own.

It is obvious Rooney is nowhere near the force he was early in his career when he should be peaking at his age.

‘If you look at the quality of player that comes to England I don’t think we have the best players in Europe or in the world,’ Scholes told BT Sport.
‘The best players are at Real Madrid or Bayern Munich. I think the level below that is probably Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus. And under that is where the quality of English clubs come into it.

I guess Moyes and Woodward where still high on osogbo Vodka when they agreed to the ridiculous pay for him.

E be like say Rooney de drop like €50,000 for el jefe every Friday so that he go de start and finish matches any time he's fit. How can a player be this bad and yet for some reason still starts? Everyone knows LVG as a strict disciplinarian who doesn't take sh!t from anybody, when he came newly, everybody said that RVP will start all our games as he will be favoured by his fellow country man, fast forward to this season, he is playing in Turkey. Depay has served us sh!t with Fanta this season, he is currently on the bench. The likes of Failcow and Di Maria were rotting on the bench and were eventually shipped out but not Rooney. I watched sky sports this morning and not one of the pundits criticised Rooney's performance yesterday, instead they blamed the team. How can you relegate your best striker to the wings just to accommodate a washed up Rooney? Had Martial started upfront, we would hv been singing a different song cos he brings the needed pace and creativity upfront even if he doesn't score but el jefe will gladly push him to the wings n yet complains of lack of pace upfront.

Come Wednesday n Saturday I won't be surprised to see Rooney upfront and Martial on the wings again. We should start looking for a replacement for LVG if he decides to continue this foolery.

rooney was world class in his late teens. no one would deny that. i said rooney is a fraud(that's a present tense). grin

rooney was my favourite player in the mid-2000s. i must have bought 20 of his shirts at that period of his mercurial powers!

the nature of rooney's contract says we must pay him £50k per week for his image rights & co. if he doesn't play, his brand will suffer & the club won't make enough from him to pay the contractual £50k per week.

Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by elampiro(m): 6:50pm On Oct 26, 2015

Some things are over emphasized. A striker who has more than 30 touches in a game is okay.

Rooney is not playing well but the stats they are bringing to ridicule him are ridiculous themselves.

Van Persie has once had 11 touches in a game. Rooney had 50 and they said it's bad.

Last season RVP averaged 23 passes per 90 minuets played while Falcao averaged 27 per 90 minutes.

I also read Falcao was not this bad. That is a lie. Falcao was a falling falling even against feather weight defenders and midfielders. The little I have seen of Falcao this season, he is not any better than when he left us. I saw him in a certain Capital 1 cup, he missed clear cut chances. Couldn't even kick a free kick, he fell down when he was to take a free kick.

Criticism should be constructive.

!
My point is Vardy is 28, just two years younger than preggo. At 28 Rooney was already running on fumes yet he was given a second bumper package.

To me it seems he cannot go beyond what he has already offered us.
Yesterday he kept bumping into Herrera, falling back to retrieve the ball instead of making runs into the opposing box that would keep Otamendi or Kompany busy, thus nullifying Herrera. When your own player blunts other offensive weapons then I can't think of wha else to say. That was why Otamendi could be free to double up on Martial.
I don't want to call for his head but he isn't offering anything for us at this point.
Did you see the pass Martial gave to Lingard?
Rooney was closer to the area but Lingard out sprinted him to get the attempt. Instead of Rooney to anticipate a follow up for a simple tap-in,he just stood there when Lingards effort came off the woodwork and put his hands on his head.

At that point I knew this guy no longer has the drive and hunger anymore.

My point is Vardy is 28, just two years younger than preggo. At 28 Rooney was already running on fumes yet he was given a second bumper package.
there's a tenable excuse for that.....
rooney started too early. at 16, he was already playing for a top-6 team in the premier league. this is his 14th season at the top level in a very physical league. there's no way he won't run on fumes at 28.

That was why Otamendi could be free to double up on Martial.
rooney is finished.
he's like the flaccíd pënis of a man trying to have sēx. he has nothing to offer. i blame LVG in parts for his lack of game management.

kompany had copped a yellow card in the first half. if LVG moved martial upfront to destroy kompany with pace, we woulda won the game cos kompany would have had to get sent off or get destroyed with pace.

however, van gaal kept a hopeless rooney with kompany. kompany is even faster than the current rooney so it was easy for the city defenders to tame rooney. they were very comfortable dealing with rooney.

At that point I knew this guy no longer has the drive and hunger anymore.
everything is dead for rooney.
he has no pace, no vision and he no longer possesses a football brain. i don't even see him good enough to be on the bench. LVG should send him to dubai for a 4-week break.

If I ask you to support your claim now you would run away

Bayerns last game only 2 out of 11 players were from other Bundesliga sides (Neuer and Lewandoski).

Man Utd last game Jones, Valencia, Smalling, Rooney, Mata and Schneiderlin were from other EPL sides making it 6 out of 11

On the bench you had , Carrick, Fellaini who were from other EPL sides too plus Young and Shaw who are injured

So who between Man Utd and Bayern molest their league for players
I should support what everyone sees every season. Go and ask anceloti why he is not considering coaching Bayern?

And I don't understand your reply about certain players of certain nationalities playing for a club. Bayern's exploits in europe shows that they are consistently fantastic team because they hold their own when they are in the CL. But in the burnthisleague down they overrun everybody with a little bump here and there that really does not matter at the end of the day.

I don't have time to go back and forth with arguments but in the prem that u so much like to draw analogies whenever the stature of the Bleague is questioned, there frequent surprises where supposedly lower teams surprise the traditional top teams, but because it happens to all the top teams it kinda cancels out the advantage team A would have enjoyed from the loss of team B, considering that both team A & B are top teams.

In the Bleague its not like that. Bayern ends up losing a few games which makes no diff because they usually have a 10points gap when they win the league.
