While I join millions of Yorubas to celebrate the emergence of the new Ooni, I'm a bit concerned for the newest Olori. I read somewhere that the couple have only one daughter. Is the new Oonirisa going to stick to the one man-one wife vow, or go take more wives? For a monarch to have only one child, and a daughter for that matter, calls for a great concern for the Olori. Moreover, the new Ooni is too handsome and will surely be lured by some women, and considering the enormous influence he currently has.
I also pity the woman because she has just "sacrificed" the rest of her husband's lifetime to the Yoruba kingdom, and ultimately (when he passes away) to the gods (if there are ones).

If need be, he can decide not to take on additional wives.

However, i dont think this thread is necessary.

He is bound to take care of them but marrying anyone of them I guess isn't a must. I doubt if it is.

Abomination. None of his ancestors had one wife. It won't start from him. The glory of the latter must surpass the former.

He will surely have more children and he will acquire more wives. Even Emir Sanusi who already have a complete team before going into the palace is still in the business of acquiring new wives let alone a youthful Ooni who has at least 50 years to rule.

The Ooni next throne ain't going to his son...

So what's the fuss

It's not like his son will inherit the throne...

But an entirely new royal family will take over in his demise....

Long live the king by the way wink

His first wife though! The moment she realizes that she's going to be having co-wives. I wonder how she's gonna feel.

A good man would have sat his wife down and discuss with her the moment he was told he was being considered to become an Ooni.
He would have explained what it entails. the pros and cons. I dont think it will come to her as a surprise.

[size=13pt]If he's educated and spiritual , he may keep his one wife

But as long as there'll be traditional believers and Oloyes , The King does not need to psyche another chick, the Oloyes will donate girls and ladies for free

It's an offer he can not refuse and as such There's no way he's gonna have just one wife

Ibo ni won ti n se iru e ??

Entirely new royal family?
So royal families spring up every now and then. Thats a news.
His son might not inherit the throne but he needs to preserve the throne for his lineage.

Well if your reason is based on inheritance having a son is not really necessary. Even if he had one, he will not become apparent heir to the throne, so why niggle?

It's obvious that his son is not going to be the heir apparent to the throne. It may not even be his grandson, but his great grandson. He became the Ooni because the lineage was preserved by his grandfather & his father. It's African to think of preserving family trees through male children, how much more royal families.
My advice for single ladies: Don't take the risk of marrying a prince except you are ready to share your man with some 'Olorunsogos'.

Actually now immediate son doesn't inherit the throne any longer but another family that belongs to the royal household with inherit the throne...

Example of those In Lagos are the aromire family, kosoko family, akinolu family etc...

So. That every family can get a feel of it and that's the reason the immediate eldest son of the late Ooni didn't get to the throne by default unlike the past

how do you know none of his ancestors had one wife? That's an assumption with no evidence to support it.

the ancient Ife art shows a king with only one wife (interpret that however you like), so its not necessarily something never seen before.

Many of the Yorubas to the west who predate Ife, only have one wife.

My point is, it is not always set in stone.

I know what you were trying to pen down in your initial post. You just did not put it right.
Actually, his lack of male child means the throne has moved away from his own lineage for ever. A male child means, the throne might still come back to his lineage, in the 10 or more generations. It is a maybe tho.
The chance is very slim as most Yoruba thrones has many ruling houses who are entitled to the throne, and these ruling houses have couple of different royal families/lineage within them. Which keeps growing by the day.

Does any traditional law say a king must be succeeded by his son? The immediate past Ooni, Sijuade, was not succeeded by his son, not even a person from his ruling house.
