Passingshot can you please help us confirm if Ajimobi truly did these things?
Generally, Ajimobi has been disappointing.

The last time I heard, he owed Yes O guys.
No real achievements in education and even agric sector. The city of Ibadan still has no proper waste management system. Though he has done something in area of roads and few other infrastructure but they come at very high costs compared to what obtains in other states.

The painful thing is, none of his challengers in the last election offered anything better than Ajimobi. Hence I feel pained and hopeless for the immediate future of Oyo state. I hope someone outside the guys we know now will come up before 2019 to lead the state out of the present predicament.

PROF AYODELE AWOJOBI

Prodigies of Yoruba origin abound across the world. Some of these extraordinary individuals broke barriers and reached milestones that etched their names in stone.
Prof Ayodele Awojobi, an epitome of excellence in the field of Mechanical Engineering and a brilliant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Lagos is today still celebrated for his laudable achievements.

He is a man with many firsts.
He is the first African and Nigerian to be awarded the Doctor of Science (DSc) in Mechanical Engineering from the then Imperial College of Science and Technology, London (now Imperial College, London).
He was the first to attain a first class degree in Mechanical Engineering in a Nigerian institution then Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology, Zaria (now Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria).
He is the youngest Professor in the Faculty of Engineering, University of Lagos and the first ever to be promoted from Associate Professor to full Professorship within a week.
He produced the first vehicle in Nigeria with two steering wheels, each at the front and rear known as Autonov 1

He is a globally respected academic, inventor, author and activist.

The icon who was popularly referred to as “Dead Easy”, due to his simplified way of impacting knowledge to his listeners was considered a scholarly genius by the few people he had contact with him while he was alive.

Prof Awojobi who hailed from the defunct Western Region was born on March 12, 1937. He attended St Peter’s Primary School, Faaji and then proceeded to CMS Grammar School, Lagos for his secondary education. His academic brilliance was discovered during his secondary school days and he was regarded a straight-A student. He garnered eight distinctions in his secondary school final exam to demonstrate his outstanding brilliance. It is on record that in his final year in the secondary school, he played the role of Macbeth in one of the books of Williams Shakespeare. He memorized the entire book so well that he assisted other actors with their lines during rehearsals”.

After his Senior Certificate Examination, he gained admission into the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology, Zaria (now Ahmadu Bello University [ABU]) and Imperial College of the University of London (now Imperial College London). He bagged his first degree in Mechanical Engineering – a BSc (Eng) London, with first class honours, at the then Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology, Zaria. While in the school, he wrote his own calendar of achieving an impracticable feat by graduating in three years in 1962.

After his BSc degree, he lectured for a while at the University of Lagos and was awarded a Federal Government Scholarship for a post-graduate degree in the field of Mechanical Engineering at the Imperial College of the University of London (now Imperial College London).

The Federal Government awarded Awojobi another scholarship to study further at the post-graduate level in the field of Mechanical Engineering at the Imperial College of the University of London (now Imperial College London). He completed the course, successfully defending his thesis, and was awarded a PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 1966. His research paper, particularly in the field of vibration, was cited by international research fellows of Engineering in 2011, while other research papers are archived by such publishers as the Royal Society.

He forged ahead in his field and became the youngest professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Lagos.

As an icon of repute, the late Professor singlehandedly converted a Leyland Jeep named Autonov 1 from right hand to left hand and also designed a bi-directional Armoured vehicle which can be moved forward and backward without turning it round and codenamed it Autonov2 because of its ability to achieve its highest speeds at a moment’s notice, in the normal reverse direction. He highlighted the advantage this might offer to army vehicles, as an example that might need to make a fast retreat, in a cul-de-sac or ambush situation. The inventions were home grown, home inspired and home delivered technology that required no transfer from anywhere but simply the work of the great prodigy.

Point out in chapter and verse where I mentioned the word 'Igbo.' Last time I checked, there were lots of people living across the Niger.

And nobody said the 'guy living across the Niger eulogise mediocity and nepotism', like you stated. Stop jumping to conclusions. .My words were clear: "folks from other areas who are used to mediocrity and nepotism." Can you see Igbo in that sentence?? shocked

Assembly okays Ambode’s nominees

The Lagos State House of Assembly yesterday confirmed Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s nominees for the Judicial Service Commission and Audit Service Commission.

Those confirmed for the Judicial Service Commission are AbdulFatai Olawale Oluwole, Mrs. Mojisola Shodipo, Adedayo Adekunle and Rotimi Seriki.

The confirmed members of the Audit Service Commission are Waliu Onibon, Ositode Moses Dosu, Mrs. Folake Folashade Onabolu, Adekunle Otushemade and Abiodun Oladipupo Aigbe.

The candidates for the Judicial Service Commission told the lawmakers they would ensure the commission had well trained personnel, capable of reforming it in line with demands of the state.

The nominees on the Audit Service Commission assured the lawmakers that efforts would be made to block all loopholes in the treasury and ensure that the Treasury Single Account (TSA) policy of the government works effectively.

Lagos Constitutes Task Force On Road Repairs

Lagos State government said it has declared zero tolerance for potholes across the state by inaugurating a task force on road repair.

The state’s commissioner for works and Infrastructure, Engineer Ganiyu Abiodun Johnson, made the disclosure while speaking at a forum with the management staff of the ministry and its agencies.

According to him, the government has constituted a 40-member committee saddled with the responsibility of patching the potholes and ensuring their regular maintenance to ensure smooth driving on Lagos roads.

While noting that all the engineers in the ministry would participate in the exercise, Johnson said the committee would also work on rehabilitation of collapsed drains and drainage channels where necessary.

He added that the state of the road represents a challenge that the present administration was committed to address.

The commissioner explained that weather condition plays significant role on the condition of the roads, noting that consistent management and better attitude towards the roads by citizens would ensure improvement in the state of the roads.

He assured that the exercise would not affect the programme of the public works corporation, but rather assist in the realisation of their goals and objectives, adding that the deployment of engineers to man the roads would also provide them with experience necessary for improved service delivery.

South West records lowest road accidents in Nigeria – FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) said on Saturday that the Southwest geo-political zone of the country has recorded lowest road accidents in the year.

The FRSC Commander in Osun state, Mr Muhammed Husaini, said this in Osogbo during the flag off of the ‘ ember month’ campaign.

Husaini said that Osun has the lowest road accident occurrence compared to other states in the country.
However, he called on motorists in the state to continue to cooperate with the commission in its efforts to ensure road safety.

He said that the command has made available both human and material resources to meet the challenges of
the ember months.

“The Ember and Yuletide seasons happened to be the most challenging periods for us, as many Nigerians especially the road users, take advantage of the these periods to travel for various activities.

“It has always been our plea to the road users to desist from road vices such as speed violation, overloading, drunk driving.

“Use of cell phones while driving, non-use of seat belts and use of worn-out tyres, among others.

“To avoid being prosecuted, there must be strict compliance to all our rules and regulation,’’ the sector commander said.

In his remarks, Gov. Rauf Aregbesola, reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensure total protection of lives and property during the Ember months.

Aregbesola, who was represented by Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Moshood Adeoti, he described the Ember months as the most significant period of the year.

He also urged the motorists in the state to ensure strict compliance with traffic rules and regulations.

Lafarge to boost operations with 310Mw IPP

Lafarge Holcim, parent company of Lafarge Africa has announced plan to provide additional 220 mega watts (Mw) of its Independent Power project (IPP) to existing 90 Mw in Southwestern Nigeria.

According to the company, this plan will be completed by 2017.

The General Manager, Independent Power Projects, Lafarge Africa, Mr Lanre Opakunle, said with 386.5 metric tonnes of installed capacity worldwide netted N6.422.2 trillion ($32.6 billion) last year from global cement sale, the firm is eyeing a long term investment in Nigeria, hence, its involvement in the construction of an IPP in the Southwest and other parts of the country.

According to Opakunle, Lafarge has already delivered 90Mw of the 50Mw which is already added to the national grid.

He also said the company is increasing and expanding the capacity of its operations and power supply to its plants in various parts of the country.

He said its newly constructed 220Mw power plant at Ewekoro, Ogun State, would commence operation soon.

According to him, the 220Mw power plant at Ewekoro, Ogun State project worth $400 million (N78.8 billion) was executed in partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Wartsila.

He said IFC would provide financial and advisory services for the project through InfraVentures, its Global Infrastructure Project Development Fund, while Wartsila would build and manage the power plant.

He expressed the hope that the project would enhance 1.4 million households’ access to electricity and help mitigate energy problems of many firms in the country, adding that power project remained one of the company’s contributions toward providing an enabling environment for new investments and the nation’s economic growth.

He added that Lafarge has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ogun State government on the collection and usage of waste, including agro-waste for the waste-to-energy independent power project with a view to generating electricity; creating job opportunities and reducing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and effects of greenhouse gases.

He however, affirmed Lafarge’s commitment to Ogun State socio-economic growth and development, saying the combustible and re-cyclable energy programme would improve the state economy and create job opportunities in addition to cleaning and reducing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and effects of greenhouse.

Apart from the Southwest, there are also plans to raise production capacity in the Northeast, Nigeria to four metric tonnes from 0.9, including a 64megawatts coal power plant by 2018 for Ashaka cement company.

Opakunle also stated that Lafarge plans to also expand its Southeastern operation to five metric tonnes from its present 2.5 metric tonnes whose investment stands at N120 billion.

For the UNICEM, he said the production capacity will be increased to 12 metric by 2018 from 8.5 metric tonnes in 2014. This, accordingly, includes construction of N9 billion road, 45Mw gas plant

He said Lafarge interacts with all actors in the construction chain and makes a net positive contribution to society and nature through sustainable developments which is part of the company’s DNA.

He assured that Lafarge Africa will continuously strives to create more value for customers and end-users by providing them with the highest quality products and solutions.
