Adepoju Backs Eaglets To Beat Mali And Retain U-17 W/Cup Title https://www.completesportsnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/eaglets5.jpg By Bamidele Boluwaji: Former Super Eagles midfielder Mutiu Adepoju has praised Nigeria's Golden Eaglets for booking a place in the final of the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile after beating Mexico 4-2 in their semi-final match played on Friday morning, Comple tesportsnigeria.com can report. The Golden Eaglets are making their seventh appearance in the final of the tournament on Sunday when they play Mali. "This is a commendable victory and from what I have seen in these players, I have no doubt about their ability to win the trophy though it could be a bit difficult playing against our African brothers. However, I am sure that our boys have what it takes to win the final," Adepoju tells Comple tesportsnigeria.com. "I must also praise Coach Emmanuel Amuneke and his coaching crew for the good job they have done in this tournament, this has shown that with proper focus, Nigeria can do better than what we are presently doing in football. These boys are talented and you can see that with the way they played the Mexicans. It was a tough match having conceded the first goal, but the players raised their game to ensure the country is not disgraced, I say kudos to them. Meanwhile, Nigeria will play Mali in the final of the developmental tournament on Sunday. "I can only wish them well and advise them not to give up, the Mexico match is over and they should be fully focused ahead of the Mali game," Adepoju concludes. Vote Now! Ighalo, Ideye, Osimhen Up For Complete Sports Player Of The Month https://www.completesportsnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/i-i-o.jpg Three Nigerian players Odion Ighalo, Brown Ideye and wonderkid Victor Osimhen have been nominated by a Complete Sports/Comple tesportsnigeria.com panel for our September Player of the Month honours. Below are the players' performances in September that earned them the nominations. Who is the best among them? To vote, simply go to the Leave A Reply field below the players' September profiles and tell us who you feel deserves the award among the three. Then add your name and location. Voting closes at 4pm Monday, 9 October. Nominees' September profiles: ODION IGHALO Winner of the Complete Sports Player of the Month for September Odion Ighalo is in the running for the award again as he continued his brilliant form in October. Ighalo, who has scored seven goals in 11 Premier League appearances for promoted Watford was also a nominee for Premier League Player of the Month for September. Just like in the month of September, Ighalo continued from where he left off when on October 3, Watford played a 1-1 draw against Bournemouth. Going behind in the 28th minute, Ighalo rescued a point for Watford when he drew them level in the 45th minute. Then on October 8, in an international friendly game against DR Congo, the Super Eagles lost 2-0 with Ighalo in action. But three days later, he scored the Eagles' third goal in their 3-0 win against Cameroon. On October 17, Watford entertained Arsenal at Vicarage Road but they lost 3-0 with Ighalo featuring for the Hornets. Against Stoke on October 24, Ighalo turned provider as his two assists helped Watford defeat Stoke City 2-0 at the Britania. And on October 31, against West Ham United, who are one of the most in-form teams in England, Ighalo scored a brace in a 2-0 win. That's four more goals for the prolific hitman in October. BROWN IDEYE After departing West Bromwich Albion following a not-too-impressive stint with the Midlands club, Brown Ideye seems to have rediscovered his scoring touch since joining Olympiakos. Though it took a while before he opened his goals account, it is evident that Ideye has settled down in his new environment following his recent goal scoring feat. With the recent invitation of Obafemi Martins back to the Super Eagles after a two-year absence, Ideye could still make a return to the team, provided he keeps performing for Olympiakos. Ideye scored his first goal for Olympiakos on October 4 in a 2-0 win against PAOK in the league. He was on target again on October 17 when he grabbed one of the goals in Olympiakos' 4-0 win against AEK Athens. On parade for AEK was former junior international, Macauley Chrisantus. In the UEFA Champions League clash away to Dinamo Zagreb on October 20, Ideye was the hero for Olympiakos as he scored the only goal in the 1-0 win. Five days later, Ideye was back in action in the league and helped Olympiakos defeat Atromitos 2-1 away. This time he didn't score. He was back amongst the goals when on October 31, Olympiakos went away to face Veria. Ideye scored one of the goals as Olympiakos won 2-0. VICTOR OSIMHEN Emulating the likes of Macauley Chrisantus, Taiwo Awoniyi, Issac Success and Kelechi Iheanacho, who lit up past U-17 World Cups with breath-taking goals, Nigeria seem to have unearthed another gem in the person of Victor Osimhen. Tall, strong, skillful and fast, Osimhen has turned out to be a menace against every opponent the Eaglets have played against in Chile. Eight goals in five games against the likes of Brazil, Chile, USA, Chile and the rest, have proved how lethal Osimhen is. And with a last four clash against Mexico coming up, who can bet against him not adding to his current goal tally? Osimhen wasted no time in making his presence felt at the U-17 World Cup when the Eaglets took on USA in their first match on October 17. Netting one of the goals, Osimhen helped the Eaglets to a 2-0 win against the Americans. Against the host Chile, on October 20, the Eaglets won 5-1, with Osimhen helping himself to two goals. And with qualification already secured, the Eaglets took on Croatia on October 23, and yet again, Osimhen was on target. But his goal wasn't enough as the Eaglets lost 2-1. Five days later, the Eaglets were back to winning ways when they took on Australia in the secound round of the World Cup. The Eaglets ran riot as they put six past the Australians with Osimhen scoring a hat-trick. CAF President congratulates Mali and Nigeria starlets The story was written a thousand miles from home, but its echo was resonating throughout Africa, with highest frequency in Bamako, the Malian capital, where thousands took to the streets despite being in the wee hours of the night. This reflects no doubt the historic and unprecedented nature of what had happened with the qualification of the national U-17 team to the final of the FIFA U-17 World Cup underway in Chile. A first for a Malian side, which made history on 1 March 2015 in Niamey, Niger, by being crowned African champions for the first time. It is in the fervour and joy of the celebration of the semi-final win against Belgium, the Malian fans discovered the identity of their opponent for the final. This will be Nigeria, defending champions and record winners in the history of the competition with four titles, who beat Mexico 4-2 in the other semi-final, to set up an all-African final, narrowly missed during the FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand last June. It is in this regard that CAF President Issa Hayatou on the morning of Friday, 6 November 2015 paid glowing tribute to the two teams, Mali and Nigeria on their impressive performances at the tournament. “There are times when words cannot express the feeling, and I think this is one of such moments. On my behalf, and that of the CAF Executive Committee, I congratulate the young players from Mali and Nigeria who have offered us moments of indescribable joy”, said Issa Hayatou, who has been carefully observing the proceedings of the tournament. “The results and performances of the two teams in the competition have left, in the opinion of many, much to be desired. But we had to realize the promise of the flowers and the young did so masterfully for the happiness of all the great African football family and the continent. “I am pleased that these results are obtained with essentially local technical persons, a testament to the quality and potential of African coaches. This reinforces the densification of our licensing program for coaches and multiplying opportunities for capacity building of African coaches,” assured Hayatou, also currently Acting FIFA President. For the final, Hayatou wants the Mali and Nigeria to continue to show the world “their technical skills and strength of character” that they have been recognised with. Omeruo Salutes Eaglets on Mexico Conquest, Wants Mali Down! By James Agberebi: Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo has applauded the Golden Eaglets for defeatind a strong Mexico side 4-2 in the semi-finals of the 2015 FIFA U17 World early Friday morning, Completesportsnigeria.com reports. Reacting to their win against Mexico, the 2009 U-17 World Cup silver winning defender charged the Eaglets to beat Mali in Sunday's final and come back home with the trophy. "Yes! Once again, we are in the final of the U-17 World Cup, congrats boys. Let's bring it home," Omeruo wrote on his Twitter handle. Goals from skipper Kelechi Nwakali, Orji Okonkwo, Osinachi Ebere and Victor Osimhen, secured the win for the Eaglets. Meanwhile, in the other semi-final, Mali came from behind to beat Belgium 3-1. This will be the second time the Eaglets will be meeting an African team in the final of the U-17 World Cup. U-17 World Cup: NFF urges Eaglets to create record for Buhari Abuja – The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has urged the Golden Eaglets to create record for themselves and Nigeria by winning U-17 World Cup title for the fifth time. General-Secretary of NFF, Mohammed Sanusi, gave the charge in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja. The team of Nigeria line up before the FIFA U-17 Men’s World Cup 2015 group A match between Nigeria and USA at Estadio Nacional de Chile on October 17, 2015 in Santiago, Chile. (Photo – FIFA) Sanusi said that victory by the Eaglets in Sunday’s final of the tournament in Chile would also be a record for President Muhammadu Buhari. According to him, Buhari will make history by receiving the trophy as a civilian president, 30 years after he received it as a military head of state, when the Eaglets won the maiden edition of the tournament in 1985 in China. The young Nigerians on Thursday set up an all-African final with Mali after defeating Mexico 4-2 in one of the semi-final encounters. Sanusi said that the football house was optimistic that the Eaglets would do the country and the president proud. “By the grace of God, history will repeat itself. “President Buhari received the trophy from the Golden Eaglets when he was a military head of state in 1985. “Now that he is a civilian president, I hope that the team will give him the trophy again,’’ he said. The NFF scribe said that the Eaglets had everything going for them in the tournament, especially now that it would play an African opponent in the final. He allayed the fear being expressed by some Nigerians that Mali stood a better chance to win the trophy having won the 2015 Africa U-17 championship in Niger Republic, early in the year. He said, “Golden Eaglets are not afraid of opposition; the Eaglets have respect for every team but do not fear them because we know that football is about eleven players on each side. “However, you need to respect your opponent for you also to be respected but that does not mean that you will over respect them in the field of play. “I knew how good this team is after it participated in a four-nation tournament in Korea. “The team defeated Brazil and Argentina at that tournament; it was a morale booster for us and that was why the inferiority complex in some of our players disappeared. “There is no under-dog in football; if you think you can overrun an opponent easily, then, you might be in for a shocker”. Sanusi urged Nigerians to continue to pray for the team to enable it complete its assignment by winning the trophy. Expect Tough Final,Toro Tells Amuneke’s Wards BY TAOFEEK LAWAL https://leadership.ng/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Emmanuel-Amuneke-300x210.jpg As Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets continues to prepare for the final of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile with Mali tomorrow, a former secretary-general of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), Sani Ahmed Toro, has hailed the team for its high level of discipline, but warned the Emmnuel Amunele-tutored lads to prepare for war as they face the Junior Maliens. “So far, I am impressed with Amuneke and his team; not just because they are winning but largely because of the character they display on and off the ball. I see a lot of future in some of the players,” Toro said, expressing his delight at the ease with which familiar foes Brazil and Mexico were dispatched by the Eaglets. Toro recalled the tough and highly entertaining final game at the 1993 edition of the competition in Japan between Daniel Addo captained Ghanian black starlets and the star-studded Golden Eaglets side captained by Wilson Oruma in 1993 and projected a very tough final against Mali tomorrow. “I do not expect an easy final on Sunday and I believe the team and crew are aware that it is not going to be easy, but we will be praying for them. As African champions, the Malians would like to prove a point. They are very organized and have some good ball players. But I also believe that the team they met during the African championship has undergone transformation to be able to get to the finals in Chile. It promises to be tough but we still have an edge,” he said. leadership.ng/news/472590/expect-tough-finaltoro-tells-amunekes-wards |

Go for the Cup, Pinnick tells Eaglets https://sunnewsonline.com/new/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/eaglet-celebrate.jpg Nigeria Foot¬ball Federation President, Amaju Pinnick has urged the Golden Eaglets to go for the trophy even as he declared his pride and joy with the Emmanuel Amuneke tutored young lads. The atmosphere in the Golden Eaglets’ locker room soon after they beat Mexico 4-2 on Thursday at the Es¬tadio Municipal Ester Roa was ecstatic and on hand to share the momentous occasion was NFF Presi¬dent Amaju Pinnick, who sang and danced but was quick to refocus the history-chasing Coach Emmanuel Amuneke-led side. “Today, you convinced Nigerians you are the best and I want to thank you on behalf of Nigerians espe¬cially, President Muham¬madu Buhari, for playing your hearts out and truly demonstrating the never-say-die Nigerian spirit,” he said amidst intermittent thunderous ovation. “I’m extremely happy for Emmanuel (Amuneke) because he, along with other officials, have demon¬strated that they are good fa¬thers to you all and I’m glad that I was able to withstand the pressure to sack him when the team failed to win the African Championship trophy in Niger Republic. “Here in Chile, Em¬manuel has shamed all the doubting Thomases but I don’t want you to forget that the most important match is against Mali on Sunday. This is a life -time oppor¬tunity for you to write your names in gold and you know how appreciative our country can be to winners and heroes. Upgrade Eaglets to U-20 team – Izilein Godwin Izilein, a former coach of the Golden Eaglets has urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to upgrade the current Eaglets to the U-20 team. Izilein spoke with theNews Agency of Nigeria(NAN) on Friday in Benin, while reacting to the team’s 4-2 victory over Mexico in the semi-finals of the U-17 World Cup in Chile. The coach noted that upgrading of the team was necessary, following the tactical display, discipline and skills exhibited by the players during matches. Izilein, however, stressed the need for continuity of the team. He also added that the upgrade of the team would be a way to enhance the development of football in the country. The coach added that it would also be used as an avenue for the discovery of players for the Super Eagles. “The problem is that when they finish like this, it is the duty of the NFF to instruct the coaches handling U-20 team to invite them. “If we continue to expose these players, it will be good for the development of football in the country. This is what contributes to development of football in Europe. “Coaches do not take this responsibility very seriously, instead they are always in a hurry to invite new players,” he said. On the exploits of the players in the ongoing championship, Izilein said the discipline and determination of the players had been their greatest weapon. The former Eaglets coach, who tipped Nigeria to win the cup for the fifth time, said the players had also learnt a lot from the rich knowledge of their coach, Emmanuel Amuneke. “The players are focused, disciplined and determined. Their style of play is excellent and when they lose possession; they strive to regain it promptly. “The keeper is superb while the team finishing has been the hallmark of their performance. “I am not surprised by their performance because their coach, Amuneke was a disciplined player and has obviously transformed that quality into the team,’’ Izilein said. NFF silent on cash rewards for Eaglets Nigeria’s U-17 football team; the Eaglets, are the rave of the moment though there seems to be an air of caution about pushing the players to achieving a specific objective, there is also no distinct statement from the NFF if the Eaglets will get financial motivation or anything of sorts. Speaking on the culture of motivating national teams and particularly the Eaglets in Chile, General Secretary of the Federation, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi refused to divulge much but was clear on the fact that the team is satisfied with the Federation and vice versa. Speaking with www.footballlive.ng, Sanusi pointed out that the Federation is happy to see its youth policy evidently yielding fruits. thenationonlineng.net/nff-silent-on-cash-rewards-for-eaglets/ |

If the eaglets can be more compact in the defense , they will win the Malian ,the two teams are very energetic and play attacking style . The Malians re very deadly on the wing . Come what may I think I am satisfied with the overall performance , I give kudos to amunike |

safarigirl:No you don't have to. I know where your mixed feelings are coming from sha. But don't forget the fact that, the present Golden Eaglets set is a 'strange' one. If you go by football mathematical or analytical permutations, you may be caught off guard. This is a 'strange' and unpredictable team, whose successes/results are not measured by how well they play, but by how well they listen and take instructions from the technical crew. The Malians, no doubt are African Champions, they beat us to the CAF U17 finals, they have defeated the Croatians that beat us at the group stage, but we have transformed better and faster than what we were few months ago. Am fully convinced Coach Emmanuel Amunike has an answer to their questions come tomorrow. Tomorrows match is going to be won in the defense and not attack. |

See What Malian Coach Has to Say About Meeting the Golden Eaglets in the U-17 World Cup Finals The Malian coach at the on-going FIFA U-17 world championship has spoken up on what the world should expect at the finals on Sunday. https://i0.wp.com/www.tori.ng/userfiles/image/2015/nov/06/Coach%20Baye%20Ba.jpg Mali Coach, Baye Ba The Mali coach, Baye Ba has boasted that his team is able to deal with any team they meet at the finals. According to him, it doesn’t matter who he meets, he said he just wants a team his boys will be able to handle on the final day. “For the final, I do not care if it’s Mexico or Nigeria. I just want to face a team that we can beat. “We faced a very good team (Belgium) that has tired us. “We conceded a quick opening goal, and we had to react quickly. It was very hard tactically and we ran a lot to get the win. We had a bad start in this game, which does not happen often to my players despite their young age,” Baye Ba explained. It will be recalled that Mali came from behind to defeat Belgium 3 – 1 to set an all-African final at the competition against the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria who also came from one goal down to defeat a well organised Mexican side. Goals by Boubacar Traore, Sidiki Maiga and Sekou Kita helped the West Africans come out victorious after Dante Rigo’s goal was not properly shielded by the Belgians. I love this heading!!! Let the "Scoring Instinct" come alive on Sunday too. Eaglets’ Scoring Instinct Made The Difference – Mexico Coach Coach of Mexico, Mario Arteaga has said that the scoring ability of Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets forced his wards to lose the semi-final encounter at the ongoing FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile. The four-time world champions had in the early hours of Friday after a goal down stunned baby El Tri of Mexico at the Estadio Municipal Ester Roa, Concepcion 4-2 . Goals from Kelechi Nwakali, Orji Okonkwo, Osinachi Ebere and Victor Osimhen ended the hope of the Mexicans who scored through Kevin Magana and Diego Cortes. Mario stated that his wards were fully prepared for the Eaglets, but failed to maximise the scoring chances that came their way. “We know that it would be a tough game, the toughest game in this World Cup. Both teams had chances. Unfortunately we didn’t score, Nigeria did. This was the difference. But that is football. “After our equaliser we thought we controlled the game but then Nigeria scored surprisingly. We wanted to reach the final but we failed. Of course the team is sad but we have to focus now on the third place match,” Mario told FIFA.com. Meanwhile, Nigeria’s coach, Emmanuel Amuneke said his wards are looking forward to playing in the final against fellow Africans, the Les Aiglonnets of Mali. NFF to retain Amuneke as Eaglets coach Golden Eaglets coach, Emmanuel Amuneke, will retain his position as the cadet team coach irrespective of what happened in Sunday’s final of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile, a top Nigeria Football Federation official has said. Nigeria plays African champions Mali in Sunday’s title decider in Santiago, Chile. Previous Eaglet coaches have often been automatically promoted to the Flying Eagles, but with disappointing results, africanFootball.com says. John Obuh was elevated to the Flying Eagles after he guided the country to the final of the 2009 U-17 World Cup, which incidentally Nigeria hosted. He subsequently reached the last eight of the U-20 World Cup in 2011, before he crashed out in the Round of 16 two years later. Manu Garba won the U-17 World Cup in style in 2013, but he could only lead the Flying Eagles to the Round of 16 at this year’s U-20 World Cup in New Zealand. The records of Obuh and Manu are insignificant for a country with two silver medals and one bronze at the FIFA U-20 World Cup. “It is expected that the (NFF) president, Amaju Pinnick, will announce Amuneke will stay on as U-17 coach so as to build on the experience and gains of his first stint as head coach. The arrangement of automatically promoting a coach from U-17 to U-20 has not worked because we are talking of two different levels of the game,” the official told africanFootball.com. “Take the example of Mexico. The coach who led them to the final two years ago in Abu Dhabi is the same man that guided them to the semi-finals in Chile. There are many such examples.” thenationonlineng.net/nff-to-retain-amuneke-as-eaglets-coach/ |

AF Nigeria Nigeria U17 I want World Cup, not goals record - Osimhen https://africanfootball.com/bp_images/2015/11/Brazil_v_Nigeria_2015_WC_U_.jpg The leading scorer at the 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup in Chile Victor Osimhen has said he is not focused on breaking the championship’s nine-goal record as his priority is to win the World Cup. On Friday, the gangling striker from Ultimate Strikers of Lagos equaled the long-standing record of nine goals in a single tournament jointly held by Frenchman Florent Sinama Pongolle and the Ivorian Souleymane Coulibaly, who were top scorers at Trinidad & Tobago 2001 and Mexico 2011, respectively. "The most important thing is for us to win the trophy on Sunday and that would be the greatest achievement for us," said the player, who has scored in every game at the World Cup in Chile. "I'm happy that I was able to match the record set by others in the past but that was never my ambition here." africanfootball.com/news/583073/I-want-World-Cup-not-goals-record-Osimhen |

Watchout for this guy *Diego Cortes* ................................................................................................... Could he be the next Messi & Ronaldo of his time? .................................................................................................................. Honestly when he dazzled his well timed and mesmarizing ('Messi'marrizing & Maradonizing) runs in our defense, I became furious how our defense could not close down properly, the openings in the defense line. The beauty of his goal shook the nerves off my body as my heart jumped 'Down & Up'. The only thing that made me to forgive our defense line was the win. If not mehn, But secretly and deep inside my heart, I was already in love with his moves, turning heads in our defense and making our defense line to look ordinary. *Diego Cortes* is a ~'Beast'~ .................................................................................................................. The breathtaking spectacle they witnessed was a fantastic individual goal from Diego Cortes to earn El Trian equaliser at 2-2 and allow them to dream of reaching the final. The midfielder picked up the ball on the right touchline and began an incredible solo run, dodging past five defenders as if they were slalom poles before finishing his move with a low shot. “I collected the pass, set off and just looked out for the gaps all the time,” he later explained to FIFA.com. “All of a sudden I was in front of goal and scored. Obviously I checked to see whether any of my team-mates were free but nobody was,” he said of his moment in the spotlight. “I don’t do that often, but it’s a great feeling....................................................................................................... Oliver has been a FIFA listed international referee since 2012, and has been an official in the English Premier League since 2010, taking charge of his first game aged 25, which made him the youngest ever Premier League referee. The play-off for third place between Belgium and Mexico, earlier the same day, will see a Qatari team take charge, with Abdulrahman Al Jassim joined by assistants Taleb Al Marri and Saoud Almaqaleh, while New Zealander Nick Waldron will be the fourth official. 8 Golden Eaglets Facts Ahead Final Clash Vs Mali https://www.completesportsnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/nig-mali.jpg The Golden Eaglets will take on Mali in the final of this 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile on Sunday. This is the second time the world will witness an all Africa finale after Japan 1993 where Nigeria beat Ghana in the final. Ahead of Sunday showdown, Completesportsnigeri a.com's JAMES AGBEREBI unveils eight Golden Eaglets facts in the final of the U-17 World Cup, as well as the previous encounters against the Malians in FIFA organized competitions. 1- THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THE EAGLETS ARE MEETING AN AFRICAN TEAM IN THE U-17 W/CUP FINAL The first time the Golden Eaglets played against an African team in the final of the U-17 World Cup was in Japan 1993, against Ghana. The Eaglets went on to win 2-1, thanks to goals from Wilson Oruma and Peter Anosike. 2- THE EAGLETS HAVE NEVER LOST TO AN AFRICAN TEAM AT THE U-17 W/CUP The Eaglets have won their three previous encounters against African teams at the U-17 World Cup. Their first African opponent was Guinea in the semi-final of China 1985. After 120 minutes of football, with the score tiedat 1-1, the Eaglets went on to win 4-2 on penalty shootout. Ghana was the next African team to face the Eaglets and that was in the final of Japan'93 edition. The Eaglets triumphed 2-1 against the Ghanaians. In Trinidad and Tobago 2001, the Golden Eaglets took on Burkina Faso in the semi-final and pipped them 1-0, thanks to a Femi Opabunmi 4th minute penalty. 3- THIS IS THE GOLDEN EAGLETS' 8TH FINAL APPEARANCE, THE MOST BY ANY TEAM AT THIS LEVEL The final against Mali will see the Eaglets make their 8th final appearance, the most number f appearance by any team. Their seven previous finals are: China 1985, Canada 1987, Japan 1993, Trinidad and Tobago 2001, South Korea 2007, Nigeria 2009 and UAE 2013. 4- EAGLETS WON THE FINAL OF THE U-17 W/CUP ONCE VIA PENALTY SHOOTOUT The only time the Eaglets have relied on penalty shootout to win the final of the U-17 World Cup was in South Korea 2007 against Spain. After both teams tied goalless in 120 minutes, the Golden Eaglets emerged 3-0 victors on penalty shootout 5- THE EAGLETS HAVE NEVER DEFENDED THE U-17 W/CUP SUCCESSFULLY Brazil remains the only team to have defended the U-17 World Cup. After winning their first title in 1997 in Egypt, they retained it in the following edition in 1999, in New Zealand. For the Eaglets, that is one feat they've not been able to achieve. After winning the maiden edition in China 1985, they lost to Soviet Union on penalties in Canada 1987. In Japan 1993, they claimed their second title but crashed out in the quarter-final after losing 2-1 to Oman in Ecuador 1995. And in South Korea 2007, they won their third title but failed to defend it despite being the host in 2009. They lost 1-0 to Switzerland in the final. 6- MALI ARE THE ONLY AFRICAN COUNTRY TO HAVE BEATEN A NIGERIAN TEAM AT A FIFA ORGANIZED COMPETITION Nigeria have played against African teams seven times in FIFA organized tournaments. Out of the seven encounters, Nigeria won six and lost one. The 3-1 loss to Mali at the 1999 U-20 World Cup in Nigeria was the only defeat. The other six games which Nigeria won again include: China 1985 U-17 W/Cup S/final: Nigeria 1-1 Guinea, Nigeria won 4-2 on penalties. Japan 1993 U-17 W/Cup Final: Nigeria 2-1 Ghana. Trinidad and Tobago 2001 U-17 W/Cup S/Final: Nigeria 1-0 Burkina Faso. Netherland 2005 U-20 W/Cup S/Final: Nigeria 3-0 Morocco. Canada 2007 U-20 W/Cup RD of 16: Nigeria 2-1 Zambia. Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Q/Final: Nigeria 2-0 Cote d'Ivoire). ................to be continued shortly |

......................................................................... And I must say, these facts may not hold sway, because this is a 'strange' set of Eaglets all together. 8 Golden Eaglets Facts Ahead Final Clash Vs Mali https://www.completesportsnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/nig-mali.jpg 7- GOLDEN EAGLETS HAVE WON MOST GAMES AFTER TAKING THE LEAD IN AN U-17 W/CUP FINAL Apart from the South Korea 2007 final against Spain which went into penalty shootout after 120 minutes of football ended goalless, the Eaglets have gone on to win three other finals after taking the lead. In China 1985, Jonathan Akpoborie opened the scoring for the Eaglets against West Germany in the 4th minute before Victor Igbinoba added the winning goal in the 79th minute. Against Ghana in Japan 1993, Wilson Oruma headed the Eaglets into the lead in the 3rd minute. Peter Anosike doubled the lead on 75 minutes, for a 2-1 win. And in UAE 2013, an own goal by Erick Aguirre in the 9th minute, opened the scoring between the Eaglets and Mexico. Two more goals from Kelechi Iheanacho (56th min) and Musa Muhammed (81st min) sealed a comfortable 3-0 win for the Eaglets. 8-THE EAGLETS HAVE NEVER WON THE FINAL OF AN U-17 W/CUP FINAL AFTER CONCEDING FIRST The Eaglets have never won an U-17 World Cup final after going behind. In their defeat at the U-17 World Cup final in Canada 1987, they went behind against the Soviet Union after Yuri Nikiforov 6th minute opener. Philip Osondu equalized five minutes later, but the Soviet Union won 4-2 on penalty shootout. Against France in Trinidad and Tobago 2001, Florent Sinama-Pongolle scored the first goal on 34 minutes. Anthony Le Tallec made it 2-0 on 53rd minute before Samuel Pietre added a third with nine minutes left, to end the game 3-0. And in Nigeria 2009, Haris Seferovic 63rd minute goal, gave Switzerland a surprise 1-0 win against the Eaglets inside the Abuja National Stadium.
