Eaglets played like Lions - Dabo coach

The coach of Dabo Babes, Umar Saleh, was full of praise for the Nigeria U17 team, following the 3-0 drubbing handed to his boys early on Saturday.

- The Golden Eaglets pounced on us like lions and they showed how good they are with the way they played against us, exclaimed Sale.

Exposure
- But we are happy we were able to make this trip since it has exposed our players to the national team selectors.

- I think a player like Dauda, our number 10 players would be good for the Golden Eaglets too.

Golden Eaglets vs. Dabo Babes: E.Nwokoecha(A. Benjamin 45 - A.Muhammed (L.John 45); A.Usman; L. Halilu;A.Bamidele (D.Femi 45); E.Agenor; K.Nwakali; P.Orji (D. Abdulganiyu); S.Abdullai (S.Chukwueze 45); K.Ayinde (K.Michael 45; J.Ipalibo 57:A. Adeyinka 69); V.Osimhen (E.Osinachi 57)

EAGLETS HIT THE ROAD FOR GABON CLASH

Nigeria U17s, the Golden Eaglets, will travel by road from Lagos to Cotonou from where they will catch a flight to Gabon for this weekend’s African qualifiers.

This followed the delay in the issuance of entry visas for the team to Gabon due to the host
country’s concerns over the Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria.

General secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Musa Amadu, confirmed the travel arrangements of the Golden Eaglets. AfricanFootball.com broke the story that the

Eaglets were battling to secure visas to Gabon for Sunday’s African U17 qualifier after the Gabon embassy in Abuja shut down their visa section following the outbreak of Ebola in Nigeria.

Ebola has killed seven persons since its outbreak in Nigeria.

The overall winners of this final round of qualifiers will qualify for the African Junior Championship in Niger early next year.

Gabon shock 10-man Golden Eaglets in Libreville

Nigeria's Under-17 team, Golden Eaglets, were beaten 2-1 by Gabon on Sunday in their Final round-First Leg 2015 African Under-17 championship qualifier at the Stade Augustin Monedan de Sibang in Libreville.

Victor Osimhen gave the Golden Eaglets an early fourth minute goal while the home side levelled up through Moubouhy Ngouba in the 26th minute and Maomikolo Boundembi scored the winner in the 80th minute of an engrossing match, that saw Osimhen getting a 'questionable' red card from Central African Republic referee, Jean Marc Ganamandji in the 70th minute.

Grabbed

The Golden Eaglets actually started the game well as Osimhen grabbed the curtain raiser in the 4th minute when he pushed the ball beyond the reach of the Gabonese goalkeeper off a pullout from Kehinde Ayinde.

They could have increased the tally thereafter but poor marksmanship in front of the Gabonese goal robbed them of such opportunities.

The Gabonese, however, got their equalizer through Moubouhy Ngouba following a free kick in the 26th minute after referee Ganamandji made a foul call on goalkeeper Amos Benjamin.

Chances

Yet Golden Eaglets' captain Kelechi Nwakali as well as Ayinde and Promise Orji failed to convert the opportunities that came their way as the first half dragged to an end.

There were few chances in between in the second half and referee Ganamandji turned out to be a kill joy when he gave Osimhen a red card in the 70th minute for a spurious offence- albeit after a yellow card in the 55th minute.

Ten minutes later, Maomikolo Boundembi scored the winner for the Gabonese when he pounced on the ball after a defensive slip up to bury the ball behind Benjamin yet again.

AMUNEKE ASSURES EAGLETS WILL REVERSE LOSS

Golden Eaglets coach Emmanuel Amuneke has said he expects his team to overturn a 2-1 loss in Gabon in the return leg match in Nigeria.

Victor Osimhen gave the Eaglets an early fourth minute goal, while the home side levelled up through Moubouhy Ngouba in the 26th minute. Maomikolo Boundembi scored the winner in the 80th minute of an engrossing match.

Nigeria played the last 20 minutes a man short after goal scorer Osimhen was given a "questionable” red card from Central African Republic referee Jean Marc Ganamandji. Amuneke blamed fatigue and poor officiating for the loss in Libreville, but assured his team will turn the table in the home game in a fortnight.

"The boys gave their best under the circumstances that we found ourselves especially the difficult travelling arrangement which caused fatigue especially in the second half," explained Amuneke.

"But with all sense of responsibility, the officiating of this match was poor, but we have to put this behind us and focus on the second leg.

"From what we have seen, we would have come out with a better result if we had taken our chances in the first half but we can get better at home."

Garba Sure Of Eaglets Despite Loss

Former Golden Eaglets coach Manu Garba says he's very confident the team will reverse the 2-1 defeat suffered at the hands of Gabon over the weekend in a CAF U17 championship qualifier.

Manu led the team to the last African U17 tournament in Morocco, where they finished second behind Ivory Coast, but went on to win the FIFA U17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, before being promoted to the U20's.

And he believes that the Eaglets, currently handled by his former assistant and former Super Eagles winger, Emmanuel Amuneke will steal the march against the Gabonese in the return fixture.

"I have absolute confidence that the boys will win in the return leg. They have been playing so well as a team and they probably were slightly unlucky not to have won," he said.

The Nigerians couldn't travel to Libreville on Friday for the game which was initially fixed for Saturday, but due to the Gabonese authorities refusing them entry into the country for fear of the Ebola Virus Disease, even though the team had medical documents clearing them of the disease, the game had to be moved forward by 24hrs by CAF, before they eventually travelled on Saturday and the game played on Sunday.

And Manu thinks that may have contributed to why the team lost.

"I don’t want to make excuses for them but their failure to travel when planned may have contributed.

"Sometimes some African countries can act funny in these situations. But the good thing is it wasn't a heavy defeat, and it's certainly not what they cannot recover from," he added.

The Eaglets will play host to their Gabonese counterparts in a fortnight in Calabar for the return leg.

Eaglets Resume Training Ahead Of Gabon Clash

The Golden Eaglets breezed into Lagos through neighboring Cotonou but finally arrived Calabar midday on Tuesday aboard Arik Airlines to begin preparations in earnest for the finale qualifier against Gabon next week.

The team resume training at their base in Calabar on Tuesday barely hours after they returned to the country from Libreville where they lost 2-1 to their Gabonese counterparts in the first leg, final qualifying round of Africa Youth Championship, Niger 2015.

Eaglets gaffer, Emmanuel Amuneke advice his wards to put their loss to Gabon behind them and focus on the task ahead.

"I want you to put behind all that happened in Libreville because that is gone," Amuneke said.

"I want you to know that we are condemned to win our match here and you must be focused on everything we are going to do from now.

"What we demand of you is hard work and nothing but hard work; because we want you to show Gabon that you don't need to be aided by referee to win matches.

"We believe in you and we want you to apply yourself because we are going to undergo strenuous work in the coming days as we build up towards the match," he warned.

Meanwhile, seven players who failed to make 18-man list to Libreville have vowed to pull their socks up order to be part of the second leg encounter against Gabon.

"We are happy that our teammates and other officials are safely backed in Calabar but the good thing is that we too have been working even while they were away in Gabon," stated defensive midfielder, Henry Okebugwu.

"We would keep working hard and pay serious attention to the training programs because we know the coaches would only select the best against Gabon."

[b]Eaglets recount terrible Gabon experience

Golden Eaglets' captain, Kelechi Nwakali and defender Lukman Halilu have been recounting their ordeal in the hands of the Gabonese saying the nasty experience would only emboldened them for the second leg cracker.

The duo who kept a separate diary of events during their laborious journey from Lagos to Libreville noted the unsporting conduct of their hosts but hopeful their counterparts from Gabon would meet their Waterloo on the pitch in Calabar.

Stressful

- The journey from Lagos to Libreville was stressful and we were not happy the way we were treated in Lome when we were ordered out of the flight even after checking in and collected our board pass because we were told the Gabonese did not want us to come for the match.

- Even on getting to Libreville, we were warned not to even eat their food because of their hostile nature which we later saw on match day.

- The match never came in our favour to the extent that we were robbed because of the bad officiating by the referee and we are equally shocked when the fans started shouting at us and calling us 'Ebola Nigeria! Ebola Nigeria!!'

Screening

- All through our stay in Libreville, I usually remember what coach (Emmanuel) Amuneke had been telling us right from the screening that 'this journey is not going to be easy' and our experiences in Libreville gave us idea about what he meant.

Yet Nwakali believes the Golden Eaglets have put the nightmarish experience behind them as they turn attention to the second leg.

- We are going to show Gabon that Nigeria is Under-17 defending champions and not 'Ebola Nigeria' as they called us in Libreville, Nwakali said in his usual joking manner.

[b]Eaglets get cash boost to beat Gabon

The Golden Eaglets getting ready to play (Photo: Morakinyo Abodurin/Golden Eaglets)
A good hearted Libreville-based Nigerian businessman, Chief George Uche, has offered a handsome cash reward to the Golden Eaglets if they win next weekend's African Under-17 Championship finale qualifying match against Gabon.

Uche who owns a thriving freight business in the Gabonese capital said he was impressed with the performance of the team despite the odds placed before them before their 1-2 loss to Gabon on Sunday hence the reason behind the dinner reception he hosted before their departure.

Promise

Apart from doling out $500 to the players, the businessman has pledged the sum of One Million French Francs (about Three Hundred Thousand Naira) to the team should they make good their promise to beat Gabon and pick one of the tickets to Niger 2015 Championship.

Prince Udofia, Golden Eaglets' coordinator has therefore, commended Uche's magnanimity while calling on eminent Nigerians as well as Corporate Nigeria to rally behind the team in their quest to qualify for the CAN championship.

Yea, but be sure that it ain't gonna be a walk in the park either as they are going to be throwing every tactics they've got, including delays,100% deffensive play and rough tackles. All that will change if they concede early though

Eaglets secure tough win over State Champions

Akpabuyo United, current Cross River State's League Champions, were beaten 1-0 by Nigeria's Under-17 team, Golden Eaglets on Saturday at the Abraham Ordia Stadium in Calabar courtesy of a first half goal by Striker Samuel Chukwueze.

The solitary goal recorded in the 36th minute was
Chukwueze's eighth and Golden Eaglets' 81st after 29 matches of playing domestic friendly and international matches.

Experimental

Coach Emmanuel Amuneke yet started with an experimental team and the lads responded well by containing their supposedly strong opposition right from the outset as they gird their loins ahead of their forthcoming second leg African U-17 Championship showdown against Gabon.

Left-sided defender, Usman Abass did a Yeoman's job despite playing in an unfamiliar central defensive position along with Douglas Uzama.

Up font Ebere Osinachi playing in the top striking role instead of injured Victor Osimhen who would not be available after seeing red in Libreville, showed tenacity as he combined beautifully with Chukwueze.

But it was midfielder; Kingsley Michael that would be the architect of the only goal of the match when he floated an inch-perfect pass above the defence of Akpabuyo United and Chukwueze reacted sharply to slot the ball beyond the reach of on-rushing goalkeeper Asam Umuah Asam.

Enthusiasm

Both sides demonstrated huge enthusiasm throughout the remainder of the encounter officiated by centre referee Emmanuel Egon and duly assisted by Justice Ukpor and Emmanuel Ekawu.

Meanwhile, Akpabuyo United nearly got the equaliser in the 89th minute but a well-directed free kick by Bassey Okon just outside the Golden Eaglets' goal area , bounced off the post after beating the wall as well as goalkeeper Akpan Udoh.

[b]Eaglets get pass-mark ahead Gabon game

The Eaglets before the game against Congo at Abeokuta (Photo: Moraks/Futaa.com)
Dr. Patrick Okon, Hon. Chairman of Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State, is confident that the Golden Eaglets would triumph in their upcoming African U-17 Championship qualifier against Gabon.

The Emmanuel Amuneke-tutored side suffered a 2-1 loss to Gabon penultimate Sunday in Libreville but have since intensified their training in order to turn the table against the visitors in the decisive second leg-final round qualifier.

Challenges

But speaking against the backdrop of his team, Akpabuyo United's 1-0 loss to National Under-17 side at the weekend, Okon said he was okay with their standard as they brace up for further challenges.

- I was really impressed with the two teams but more especially with our boys who did well despite playing against the national team, observed Okon.

- This team is just about eight months old and we believe this kind of exposure against a strong side like Golden Eaglets would help us.

Surprise

Speaking in similar vein, Dr Imeh Eshiet, one of the financiers of Akpabuyo United, said he was pleasantly surprised with the makeup of the Golden Eaglets under Amuneke.

- I'm so happy to be here to watch the Golden Eaglets especially the opportunity of meeting Emmanuel Amuneke who is one of my all-time favourite players, he said.

- I'm impressed because when you look at the boys he has put together on television, you think they are big.

Agility

He further commended the team for being able to contain the supposedly stronger Akpabuyo United who are current Cross River State League Champions:

- These are small boys having seen them at close quarters and displaying such agility and composure against our boys was delightful.

[b]Eaglets stars suspended for Gabon return clash

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets will be without striker Victor Osimhen and midfielder Ernest Agenor for this weekend’s final African U17 qualifier against Gabon due to suspensions.

Gabon won the first leg at home 2-1 with the overall winners of this match-up advancing to next year's African Junior Championship in Niger.

Team’s leading scorer Osimhen was sent off during the first leg in Libreville, while Agenor ruled himself out after accumulating a second yellow card in the qualifiers.

The midfielder had his first booking despite an impressive performance in the 4-0 win against Democratic Republic of Congo in Abeokuta and a second one against Gabon in Libreville.

However, despite the setback Golden Eaglets coordinator Prince Udofia said there is no cause for alarm since there is strength in depth in the team, insisting that other players would rise to the challenge.

"The coaches have been working with other players since they knew both Agenor and Victor would not be available and there is no problem about that because there is a pool of good players to be chosen from," he said.

[b]Eaglets: Amuneke calls for support against Gabon

The Eaglets in training before the game against Congo U17 (Photo: Moraks/Futaa.com)
Golden Eaglets' Head Coach, Emmanuel Amuneke, has called on Nigerians especially football fans in Calabar and its environs to troop out en mass on Saturday when Nigeria host Gabon in a decisive CAN Under-17 qualifier.

Nigeria's Under-17 team finally returned to their 'hallowed turf' of the U.J Esuene Sport Stadium in Calabar on Wednesday one year since their predecessors mauled Diamond Football Club of Umuahia 5-1 on September 21, 2013.

Fantastic

In that game, Chidera Eze grabbed a brace alongside Taiwo Awoniyi,Musa Yahaya and captain fantastic, Musa Muhammed.

It is on record that the 2013 World Cup-winning Golden Eaglets won all their matches including three CAN Under-17 qualifiers and four international friendly matches at the U.J Esuene Stadium the last term.

The complex has been under renovation ahead of the forthcoming National Sport Festival in November and Amuneke is excited about Eaglets' return, calling on fans to troupe en mass for the cracker against Gabon.

Workout

But speaking after his wards' workout on Wednesday's evening as their first practice session ahead of Saturday's African Under-17 second leg-final round qualifier against Gabon, Amuneke has called on the fans to rally behind the Eaglets in their customary way.

- Calabar is our home and it is on record we have not lost a game at the U. J Esuene Stadium.
- I'm using this opportunity to call on the fans to come and cheer us to victory on Saturday.

- We are going to do our best to make them happy on Saturday, he said.
