N75bn controversy: Ex-Anambra gov, Obi speaks at last

The former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, has finally broken his silence on the controversy raging over the actual amount he left in the coffers of the state when he left office. His response came via a text message we sent after several unanswered calls.

His reply: “Let me put the records straight concerning the unnecessary controversy over debt and the 75 Billion Naira in investment & cash my government left. I left office almost two years (over 600 days) ago and I will not comment on the statements of my successor, or his proxies.
“All I can confirm is that we never borrowed from any bank in Nigeria, issued any bonds or owed any certificate for jobs executed when we left office. We handed certified accounts statements. Whatever we said we left is properly documented. Copies of same were made public at an event in Women Development Centre, Awka.
“The Managing Directors of the three banks in which the respective sums were domiciled and the incumbent governor were in attendance. Should it be that the government has lost or misplaced its own documents, it can approach the banks. I will also make myself available within 48hrs, complete with my own copies of the documents; as I still have them.
“I will not be seen as working against the progress of Anambra State, a state I did everything possible to put on the right track. All I can tell you is that I will earnestly continue praying for my successor to build a better Anambra State for our children.
“My heart bleeds whenever Anambra is on the news for the wrong reasons. I am also earnestly praying for the President of Nigeria to build a better Nigeria. I am presenting Nigeria as a most attractive investment destination in Africa to my class at Cambridge University at 2p.m. today (yesterday).”
It would be recalled that Anambra State government had called a press conference on Saturday and alleged that Obi left a debt of over 100 Billion for his predecessor.
His Media aide, Mr. Valentine Obienyem described the claim as untrue, challenging Anambra State government to publish the contracts and the names of those being owed.
He further called on Association of Anambra Accountants to set up an independent committee to look into Anambra finances as at March 17th, 2014, to ascertain the actual amount Obi left in the treasury, insisting that Anambra State is looking for justification for the massive loans they had concluded to take from financial institutions.

Today's Channels Television debate between Willie Nwokoye, principal Secretary to Obiano and Valentine Obienyem SA media to Obiano: my observation.

Willie Nwokoye was more eloquent than Valentine Obienyem
But the issue of the 75billion naira Anambra state money can not be resolved by eloquent grammar.

Valentine Obienyem came with bank details.
Signed bank balances from affected banks.
Most importantly Valentine Obienyem alleged that the liquid cash handed over to Obiano was 37billion naira and not 9billion naira as claimed. He equally asked the presenters to reachout to those banks for independent verification.

It is unfortunate that Willie Nwokoye had no document to backup his American grammar.
I was thinking that Willie Nwokoye would have been showing us bank balances and documents to deny the evidences presented to the media by Valentine Obienyem s at yesterday.

I thought Obiano has documented evidences to prove that the cash handed over to him was 9billion naira and not 37billion as evidently claimed by Obi.

Another weighty allegation Valentine Obienyem threw was that Obiano wanted to borrow massively but that the bank managements they apprpached were afraid that there money will not be safe as they believed that he mismanaged what Obi left for him.
Conlusion:

When will Obiano show us documented evidence from affected certified banks that it was only 9billion naira cash and not 37billion naira that he received.
We are waiting.

It is beyond argument that Peter Obi almost single-handedly made Willie Obiano governor and that is why Willie has to bear the booby traps set for him to portray him as incompetent for close to 2 years now and was performing in the midst of these landmines:
1. Imagine all those billions he doled out to mission schools, hospitals, and others[i] two days[/i] before he left office.
2. N 5 billion to Anambra state university 5 days to leaving office.
3. Engagement of more than 10,000 workers into the state civil service when he never found it necessary to employ even one worker for the 8 years he ruled.
4. Conducting of local government elections at the twilight of his tenure, something not done in his 8 years rule

Yet Obiano did not utter a word and was running the state efficiently while ignoring the N75b singsong.

Then the cash crunch in the nation started to bite harder and the Obi supporters keep praying for things to get worse for Anambra while they N75b cash singsong continue even drowning the modest achievements being made by the Governor earning him Governor of the year 2015.
