Nigeria vs Mali

African U23 Championship(Olympic Qualifier)

Sun 29th Nov.

Venue: Caroline Faye Stadium

time: 5pm

Nigeria U23 national team, popularly known as Dream Team, will on Sunday November 29, 2015, kick-off its campaign at the U23 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Senegal, with first match against Mali.

A quick look at Malian opposition shows something interesting. Mali U23 national team may prove a hard nut to crack at the tournament – WATCH OUT! The West African country has been doing very well in age grade soccer tournaments, especially this year – won Bronze at the last FIFA U21 World cup and Silver at the just concluded FIFA U17 World cup in Chile.

Mali U23 will be seeking to gain its first Olympics men soccer qualification ticket by building on it’s FIFA U21 world cup success. Head coach, Cheick Qumar Kone announced several of the Bronze medal U21 players in his squad.

Star striker, Souleymane Sissoko and Playmaker, Diadie Samassekou were included alongside midfielder, Souleymane Diarra, Defenders, Aboubacar Doumbia, Souleymane Couilbaly and Goalkeeper, Djigu Diarra.

Kone plays a unique 4-4-2 style, with great ball winners and jugglers crowding the midfield. Mali may match Nigeria U23 team pound for pound, then go on to plot one or two counter attacks to seal a victory. Kone’s match plan may be to stop the free flowing football style of the Dream team and to frustrate all their efforts at the flight of the match.

Samson Siasia, Head coach of Nigeria U23 team is confident with what his boys can do. Dream team has some enterprising ball players like Oghenekaro Etebo, Azubuike Okechukwu and Stanley Dimgba at the midfield.

Although, Siasia couldn’t obtain the services of Manchester City wizkid, Kelechi Iheanacho and Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi for this tournament, but he had to let even star midfielder, Godwin Sokari walk out of team.

Sisasia also lost the services of Granada of Spain goal merchant, Isaac Success due to injury. But there’s nothing to worry as record breaking, FIFA U17 all-time highest goal scorer, Victor Osimhen replaces Isaac; box-to-box striker, Junior Ajayi and lethal goal machine, Taiwo Awoniyi may spearhead Nigeria U23 strike force.
Nigeria will also be facing Egypt and Algeria in the Group. The champions, first and second runner ups in this AFCON tournament will automatically qualify for Rio Olympics men soccer – that’s the target of Siasia and his Dream team.

its the Battle of favourites as Nigeria face Mali in U23 AFCON

The two top teams in the U23 AFCON Group B, Nigeria and Mali, will slug it out on Sunday evening in the tourists’ resort of Mbour in Senegal in what many believe could determine the winners of this group.

Nigeria U23 team, Dream Team VI, will begin their campaign at the U23 AFCON on the artificial pitch of Caroline Faye Stadium by 5pm after they rounded up their training camp in The Gambia with a big 5-0 win over Gambia U20 team after both teams first drew 1-1 in another warm-up game.

Samson Siasia’s team will hope for a winning start against Mali, whose country has been on a high internationally this year after they finished third at the FIFA U20 World Cup and were beaten finalists in the FIFA U17 World Cup.

Nigeria and Egypt are the top favorites in that group. Mali does not have the pedigree at U23. In fact they have never qualified for the Olympics.

Isaac Success injured again? When will Success actually show himself to Nigerians at a decent level? Good luck to Osimhen if truly he replaced Success.

Dream Team striker Ajayi shelves personal glory

Striker Ajayi Junior says personal glory must take a back seat for the Nigeria U23 team to triumph in the 2015 CAF U23 Nations Championship which is due to take place in Senegal.

The dangerous pointman has raked in four goals in six matches in the Tunisian top-flight for CS Sfaxien and appears to have hit his top form.

Sfaxien are in contention to challenge for titles on all fronts including the Tunisian Ligue One and FA Cup.

With Dream Team VI fans expecting him to replicate his club form at the national team when the U23 tourney gets underway this weekend, Ajayi says he is more concerned about the collective target of the team than his personal glory.

“It’s not about me at all. We want to qualify for Rio Olympic Games and that for me is our focus,” he said

“Scoring goals will be an added bonus. But the collective good of the team is of paramount interest to me.

“We will pick three maximum points in our opening group match against Mali on Sunday and hopefully look to build on that.”

Isaac Success is not injured, he scored the winner for Granada last weekend..

4-3-3 is a sure bet for Siasia, I bet you the Malians would not be able to stand up to our lethal strike force..

Taiwo Awoniyi, Ajayi and Osimhen..

Wish them all the best.

Hotshot Victor Osimhen will wear the Number 9 shirt:

As a result of his late registration for the U23 AFCON, U17 World Cup hotshot Victor Osimhen will wear the Number 9 shirt the player he has replaced would have won.

Osimhen also wore No 9 shirt to score record-breaking 10 goals at the recent U17 World Cup in Chile.

Granada forward Isaac Success was replaced by Osimhen after Nigeria proved he has suffered a major injury that will stop him from the U23 AFCON, which starts today in Dakar, Senegal.

Incidentally, both strikers hail from Edo State.

Skipper Azubuike Okechukwu, who is based in Turkey, will maintain his favourite jersey number 14, while Taiwo Awoniyi keeps his No 18 shirt, which he also won when he led the Flying Eagles to win the African Youth Championship in Senegal in March.

Yeah, I believe you're spot on. Isaac Success may "actually" not be injured.

He did score in Granada's 2-0 win over high-flying Athletic Bilbao. His cross was turned in by laporte for an own-goal (first goal) and then the second was a "sweet" strike from him.

Truth is this: For the NFF to have officially replaced Success' name on the official list with Osimhen's, they needed to report that Success was injured (probably they came up with that compromise with his club, Granada).

Caf rule for this "change of players" after official submission of a team's list is this:

"...........a player on the final list
cannot be replaced unless seriously injured
at the latest 24 hours at least before the
beginning of the first match of his team.

“The CAF medical committee must approve
his substitution in writing, after reception
and approval of a detailed medical
certificate.

“CAF medical committee shall write a
certificate attesting that the wound is
sufficiently serious to prevent the player
from participating at the U-23 AFCON and
submit this certificate to the organizing
committee for approval…”

**The changes were done in accordance with
Article 66.2 of regulations of the tournament**

P.S: Is Success really injured then? I don't think so. Unless he picked up injury earlier this week in Granada training?? I don't know.
BUT HOW THE NFF DID IT....... IS STILL A MYSTERY.

WELL, AT LEAST WE HAVE A GOOD REPLACEMENT FOR SUCCESS IN OSIMHEN.

But think of this, if Success was not reported injured, we wouldn't have had any replacement. We would have gone to Senegal A MAN SHORT.

I'm still kinda curious but for now, let's focus on Nigeria vs Mali. *smiles*

Meanwhile, the U-23 Afcon is already on and at this very moment, it's........

Senegal 2-1 South Africa (61mins).
