300mm sir thanks alot

Is 300mm not too shalow? I thought it's a minimum of 600mm.
Re: Construction Of A 3bedroom Bungalow Somewhere In Ajah by eghosajohnny: 6:24am On Nov 27, 2015
Oh no sir it's a raft foundation 300mm is far good enough for the project and more so the 300mm was taken from the shallow part of the land and making some areas deeper.

Thanks

More pix on the work progress as bore hole is done and the foundation blinding too

@OP, why did you opt for a raft foundation instead of a strip foundation? If it's based on soil condition, did you carry out a soil test before construction?
Re: Construction Of A 3bedroom Bungalow Somewhere In Ajah by mrpally(m): 9:11pm On Nov 29, 2015
@karleone, what is the difference between raft foundation and strip. I am not an expert in this field, so assume zero knowledge.
Re: Construction Of A 3bedroom Bungalow Somewhere In Ajah by eghosajohnny: 10:01pm On Nov 29, 2015
Wouldn't need a soil test since I'm opting for raft instead of strip foundation cos though the soil is dried there's no way strip will be introduced in the area and it's a bungalow wouldn't need a test for that solution.

nice job man, keep it up...but as an engineer you shouldnt assume things especially in an area that's known to be quite very soft,if you wanna go for testing then why change your mind and assume that the rafting will hold, what if a geotechnical result now shows that a thicker strip will hold, then it will counted as a waste on the clients side??....secondly.....
well never mind..

the raft will raise it to whatever height you want to....

Both are kinds of shallow foundation.
They are considered for use based on soil condition at site. For a strip foundation, its length exceeds its breadth.
Whereas, the raft is a combination of slab and beam structures cast monolithically to transfer load from the house to the supporting soil. Rafts are considered where the supporting soil is a loose soil but usage is determined from soil test/structural engineer recommendation.
For further information on the above, check out google. If you don't understand anything from there (google), then you can ask me.

Attached is a picture of a strip foundation.

Note:
Foundations can have a combination of pad and strip

@ karlone, are you satisfied with Jonney respond, also which of the two types of foundation would you recommend in a swampy area.

Thanks

I didn't change my mind I had to do raft cos it will protect any issue that will crop up in future, like wall soaking which is not good for a building.

Thanks

@karleone, what is the difference between raft foundation and strip. I am not an expert in this field, so assume zero knowledge.

raft foundation is a form of mat foundation in the same categories as 1.isolated pad footing, 2.combined pad footing, 3.continues pad footing and 4.cantilever pad footing.

the raft foundation is normally used when the soil strata on which the building is resting on is relatively poor (low bearing capacity, settlement rate, etc).
This foundation is spread through out the entire foundation to form the simplest form of raft foundation.
there are different type raft foundation
1. flat slab raft foundation: this is an inverted type of flat slab
2.downward beam raft foundation: this is the type where the beam is facing down while the slab is on top of the raft beam.
3. upward beam raft beam, this is a type of raft foundation where the beam is facing up and the slab is down.

one of the major advantage of raft foundation over other forms of shallow foundation is ability to distribute load over a large area of soil and uniform settlement rate.

It should also be noted that most of the raft constructed are not actually properly done because the following rules are not adequate followed.
1.raft beam and slab should be constructed monolithically
2. the raft is founded at reasonable depth below the ground level and that is why most raft foundation comes with a basement
3. the raft is done from the information gotten from a detailed soil investigation.
