Themandator:I do not know why all this bad belle from Nigerians against Anambra state. The truth remains the the state government is in a partnership with some missionaries. While the state government takes care of the structural needs and improvement of the schools. The missionaries runs the daily operations of the school. I once went to my alma mater and took pictures of teachers quarters which i sent to one of my teacher who i still have his contact. He could not believe his eyes. He could not believe that the house he was seeing was where he once lived. Whatever the poster wrote are all real. Anambra is the place to be now public school wise. |

obayaya:I dont know what you mean by mission schools and public schools. Virtually 70 percent of all public schools here were built by missionaries just like in the south west before the government took it over during the era of Muritala Mohammed. It only took the courage of the former governor of Anambra state Mr. Peter obi to return the management of some of the schools to the missionaries. Not one hundred percent. The government funds the schools and the missionaries runs the daily activities of the schools. So do you now call them missionary schools or public schools? |

But it's deception for the OP to fill up page 1, 2 and 3 with pictures from Marist Comprehensive College, Nteje and Dominicans Abetete.. These schools are completely owned and managed by the church and they are relatively new with a higher than normal school fees.. That was my point.. seek first to understand bri |

The Anambra Government has renovated over 1,500 classroom blocks to reduce infrastructural decay and Prof. Kate Omenughadilapidations of schools in the state, Prof. Kate Omenugha told newsmen in Awka that many public schools, including those handed over to the mission by the previous administration, were either renovated or reconstructed to improve the standard of education. She said the exercise cut across the 21 local government areas of the state. The commissioner added that the job was being done through the State Universal Basic Education (ASUBEB). She said that Gov. Willie Obiano gave out N433 million and N300 million cheques to Catholic and Anglican schools, respectively. “This is to combat infrastructural decay and dilapidation and we are still doing more. This is a government of continuity,’’ Omenugha said. She said that government had also started fencing of the girls’ boarding schools in the state to enhance their protection. “We started with 10 schools, which include Mater Amabilis Umuoji, Ojoto Girls, Uga Girls, Anglican Girls Onitsha, Oraifite Girls, among other,’’ she said. Omenugha said that the state government had given one million naira each to all the secondary schools in the state for sick-bay and sports equipment. She said that government had also doled out N500, 000 to each 256 secondary schools and N250, 000 to each 1,044 primary schools for improvement. “We have done a lot of training for teachers on emergency preparedness through partnership with UNICEF, and we produced handbook containing the training,’’ she said. The commissioner said the state government had also expended over N350 million on scholarships for indigent students. “We try to energise our children with incentives to spur them to do more. ’’http://www.nigeriaschoolsblog.com/news/anambra-government-renovates-1-500-schools/ |

Anambra Returns 1,040 Schools to Missionaries... with N6bn to Boot Convinced that the level of indiscipline, loss of treasured social values, and immoral acts in the society are caused by the takeover of missionary schools by government, Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has not only returned 1,040 primary schools to the various missions that owned them, he has also doled out N6 billion to enable such missions run and operate them. It was an act that electrified all stakeholders in the state. Many of them who spoke at the event not only commended the governor for the courage to return the schools to their owners, they also expressed hope that the missions would be able to restore the values and discipline for which such schools were known in those days. The N6 billion will, however, be distributed to the affected churches over the next 15 months based on the number of schools owned by each church group. Addressing a large crowd of education stakeholders, elders of the state and the general public on the occasion which held at the Women’s Development Centre in Awka, the state capital, Obi said the handover was necessitated by the level of moral decadence in society owing to what he described as the forceful takeover of mission schools by the government in 1970. “The collapse of education in Anambra State is directly connected with the takeover of schools owned by the missionaries, churches and voluntary organisations in 1970. That singular exercise signalled the disappearance of morality and the building of character from our school system. This can no longer be allowed,” Obi stated. He said that after consulting with stakeholders, he had decided to return all primary and secondary schools taken from the missionaries back to them and expressed the hope that government’s gesture would be reciprocated by the churches so that the school system would be returned to its glorious days. The N6 billion will be shared among the Catholic, Anglican and remaining government schools in four instalments. In the first instalment, the Catholic Church, which owns a lion’s share of 453 schools, will receive over N762 million, while its Anglican counterpart will receive over N498 million. The remaining public schools not taken from the churches will share about N489 million out of a total of N1.75 billion. The second and third instalments will gulp N1.25 billion each, while the fourth and last instalment will cost the government N1.75 billion. According to the governor, who assured them that the money was already available and in the bank, the money would be released to the churches after they must have submitted their work plans within 30 days. The work plans are expected to contain curriculum that should embrace steps and strategies that will gradually recover the social sanity among pupils. Such vices like cultism, sexual immorality, kidnapping, armed robbery, brazen roguery and such other malaises plaguing today’s societies, especially in Anambra State, are some of the vices that the returned schools will have to battle on how to exterminate them. But the worry, however, remains on not only how the schools will achieve the feat, but also what will happen to the moral value of schools not under the control of the missions. But Obi believes that the moral re-armament can be triggered off by the mission schools in the state. “Let us all resolve today to be positive change agents especially now that we have a government that is ready and willing to work with individuals that can complement the efforts of government for the good of society. What we have done today may not be popular but it is the right decision and we will continue to take the right decisions,” Obi maintained. In his speech, the Minister of State for Education, Nyeso Wike, praised the action of Obi, describing it as capable of turning around education in the state and bringing back lost moral values, just as he urged other states to emulate the Anambra example. The secretary of Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr. Ahmed Modibo Mohammed, who said he was a product of mission schools, also praised Obi’s action and assured him of UBEC’s continued support and pointed out that states were free to use UBEC’s money any way they wanted and that the commission was bound to give support. “The handover of schools by the Anambra State government is a step in the right direction and one that will boost education in the state,” Mohamed said. Responding on behalf of Catholic bishops, the Archbishop of Onitsha metropolitan province, Valerian Okeke, in an emotion-laden voice, assured Obi that his action of handing back schools to their owners was one of the most popular decisions ever taken in the state. In his words, “You have written your name in gold and you have wiped the tears of our people. You have rectified the anomalies of the civil war and rectified the fault of past leaders. With this action, the church has forgiven them for forcefully taking our schools.” In his speech on behalf of the Anglican Bishops, the Archbishop of the Niger province and Bishop of Aguata Diocese, Most Reverend Christian Efobi, said the governor’s action showed that when the righteous mounted the throne, the people rejoiced and assured him that they would continually pray for the governor. The National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Victor Umeh, also hailed the handover of the schools to their previous owners and thanked the state legislature for supporting it. He noted that it had been possible because APGA was the dominant party in the house, thus giving the executive arm the needed cooperation. Meanwhile, the Anambra State government has set up a committee to look into the disputed schools whose handover has been delayed. The committee will be chaired by a retired chief judge of the state, Godwin Ononiba. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/anambra-returns-1-040-schools-to-missionaries-with-n6bn-to-boot/103368/ |

NECO boss applauds Obiano for Anambras performance in Exams The Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano has been lauded for the sparkling performance of Anambra children in National Examination Council (NECO) exams. Speaking during a courtesy visit on Governor Obiano at the Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia, the Registrar/Chief Executive of NECO, Prof. Abdulrashid Garba applauded the State for recording almost 80% in 5 Credits including English Language and Mathematics in year 2015. “This is commendable sir, and that is the reason why I choose Anambra as my first port of call in my tour of states of the federation,” Prof. Garba revealed, further attributing the impressive performance of the state to the heavy investments that the state government makes in education. “I also want to appreciate you for the good relationship that your office has with NECO and to commend you for the great performance of Anambra State in NECO examinations which is largely because of the investment your government has been making in education,” the NECO Registrar observed and further revealed that since taking over the mantle of leadership of the examination body five months ago, his mission has been to guarantee credible examinations that can be accepted worldwide and to cement the relationship between NECO and various state governments in order to build confidence and cater for the Nigerian child. He also praised the governor for giving NECO a free plot of land to build its office in the state and commended Anambra for showing such a keen interest in NECO examinations. Recalling that the examinations body came into existence 16 years ago to help restore integrity to the nation’s examinations, Prof. Garba revealed that NECO has a slogan which emphasizes the importance of “doing the right thing for NECO’s integrity and doing the right thing for credible examinations.” In his response, Governor Obiano expressed happiness that Anambra has been consistent in churning out impressive results in national examinations in the past three years. According to him, “my administration has done quite a number of things in the past 18 months to ensure that Anambra continues to do well in all external examinations. First is the initiative to give teachers in the remote areas of the state a quarter of their salaries in addition to their basic salaries. This has stimulated a clamour among teachers to be posted to rural areas. In addition, if a teacher teaches sciences or Igbo, she gets a quarter more to encourage her,” Governor Obiano explained. He assured NECO of the support of his administration at all times. The highlight of the visit was the presentation of a commemorative plaque to the governor to underscore NECO’s acknowledgement of Anambra’s excellent performances and the governor’s robust investment in education http://newafricanpress.com/2015/11/28/neco-boss-applauds-obiano-for-anambras-performance-in-exams/

Anambra: Giant strides in education Nov 26, 2015 Ezepueamarachi News 0 WHEN Chief Dr. Willie Obiano took over as the Executive Governor of Anambra State. He developed a vision for the state expressed through the Anambra Wheel of Development. This vision is anchored by the 4 pillars namely: Agriculture, oil and Gas, Trade and Commerce and Industrialization. To support this vision is education, which the Governor has (together with others such as healthcare) termed an “Enabler”- An enabler is an energizer, a propeller, an activator. The stronger the enabler, the stronger the pillars. Thus, a strong education is needed to make the four pillars solid. Education is key to achieving the vision of the Dr. Willie Obiano’s administration which seeks to make Anambra state the first choice investment destination and referred location to new industries. The State Ministry of Education has developed the Broad Strategic Objectives to support this vision, focusing on producing human resource capital to sustain the four pillars. Broad Strategic Objective of Anambra State Ministry of Education: The strategic objectives of the ministry are driven by the Governor’s blueprint on education. The Governor declared in his blueprint the following strategic objective. “The government will ensure that the learning needs of all are met, through equitable access to appropriate learning and life-skill programmes and be one of the top three states with lowest illiteracy rate in Nigeria”. – GOV.OBIANO To achieve this, education in the state thus comes in full package, approached from three-pronged areas Infrastructure, pupils, student’s development, and teacher Improvement. Infrastructure: For the Obiano administration, raising die infrastructural base of the schools is a priority. No doubt this raises the comfort of the students. Infrastructure for the Anambra State government goes beyond the erection of building, but, includes equipping the building with state-of the art equipment. Specific initiative: Construction of phase two of over 1,500 classroom blocks for primary schools including ongoing rehabilitations works in schools In line with the Executive Governor’s vision of creating education friendly environment in our schools and ensuring continuity in the administration of Anambra State, the government has gone to serious renovation of dilapidated structures and construction of new structures in basic education schools in the state. What is noteworthy during this period is that there is a remarkable increase in the supervision and monitoring of these projects to achieve His Excellency’s vision of quality infrastructural development in the sector. Specifically, over ,247 units of construction and renovation of blocks spread across the 21 Local Government Areas in the State are being facilitated in the state. This has helped to create child-friendly environment and reduced the extent of infrastructural decay in schools. Expanding the lnfrastructural Base-Acquiring New Schools: To continuously meet the needs and challenges of education, the government has gone ahead to acquire two more secondary schools putting the number of secondary schools in the state to 256. The schools are: Ebe Unity College, Ukpor, Nnewi South LGA and Anthony Obaze Community Secondary School, Ochuche, Ogbaru LGA. Plans have gone far to acquire a secondary school in Ndiukwuenu a town in Orumba North, that has been deprived of secondary schools in years and where the next town with a school is up to 14 kilometres away. Other infrastructural strides taken by the Willie Obiano administration include: Completion of provision of generators to 420 schools in the state by Caltec Nig Ltd; [50KVA (110 schools), and 30KVA (310 schools)]; Distribution of laptops to 220 private schools; Further deployment of internet facilities to the schools by Galaxy Backbone: Training and Certification of ICT teachers by Microsoft Academy. etc Mission – State Development Partnership: In continuation of the partnership of the state with the missions, the Executive Governor of the state disbursed the sum of Seven Hundred and Thirty-Three Million Naira (N733M) to the Catholic and Anglican missions. This is for the renovation of the Universal Basic Education Mission Schools. Security: Chief Willie Obiano’s administration has the strategic objective of: “Tactfully securing our lives assets, infrastructure and institutions and promoting a favourable environment that will attract sustainable investments and development” Anambra state within few months of Obiano’s administration became one of the safest states in the country Security devices and strategies have been put in place that sent the kidnappers and the miscreants scuttling away. Within the education sector, the government has devised a number of the “safe school initiatives” that are being seen through. All secondary schools in the state have been marked out to be fenced in this order: a. All boarding Girls Secondary schools b. All boarding co-educational schools c. AII technical schools d. others Already, 10 Girls boarding Secondary schools are benefitting, namely: Girls Secondary School, Awka-Etiti; Mater Amabilis Secondary School, Umuoji; Onitsha Girls Secondary School, Onitsha; GSS Ozubulu; Anglican Girls Secondary School, Ogidi; GSS Oraifite; GSS Ojoto; GSS Igboukwu; Girls High School, Uga; and Eastern Academy, Onitsha. Four security men and women (called School Marshals) are being trained for recruitment in all secondary and primary schools in the state. All these are geared towards reduction in the theft and vandalisation of equipment in the schools, as well as securing lives. Training of 2 teachers per school for 256 secondary schools, 1044 primary schools and 500 private primary and secondary schools on emergency preparedness and hygienic practices in schools. Distribution of infrared thermometers and dispensers to the schools. The outcome is the production of two handbooks – a “handbook on school hygiene” and “A practical guide on disaster risk reduction and emergency preparedness: a comprehensive safety handbook for schools and learning centres in Anambra State” distributed and being enforced in schools. .Fire-fighting equipment have been mounted in all the 256 secondary schools .Whiteboards distributed to schools in the state, to decrease the health hazard of chalkboards. .NIM has been released for each of the 420 public and private secondary schools for the equipping of the sickbay and the provision of the sports equipment.
