My fellow Nairalander,

I need you to expansiate these degree of a thing. And especially about the discrimination between B.Sc(ED) and B.Sc.

I need concrete info on these because I just got admission into the university of Benin and I was offered Computer Science and Education; And I saw BSCEDCO COMPUTER which means B.SC and EDU

But a guy told me I would only work as a teacher and only be lucky to be employed in a company. But if this is true, then this is not what I bargain for, I was only hoping to have a science and an education degree because I would like to teach may be in my 40's. I also noticed i would be in the educational faculty but that does not bother me but I think it should be a Sciene and Education rather.

My question is this:
I. Is a B.ED thesame as a B.Sc(Ed) as far as Nigeria is concerned.

II. Is a B.Sc more advantagious than a B.Sc(ED) in nigeria

III. Is a B.Sc(ED) actually a science and Educational faculty?
And would my subject be a combination of science and Education?

I need a good (practical life) and professional answer because it will not only educate me but it would actually help other in a situation like this and even for the sake of Posterity(future generation).

the advantage of a combined honour is that you will be allowed to pursue carriers in the education field and also in that science field.
If u finish ur 1st degree, you may decide to further ur studies at masters level in computer science if you want.. Also, you can continue ur degree in education..

I guess it is so because many people do not know that there is a certificate called B.ED(offered mainly by NCE) which is meant for teachers only and B.Sc(ED) is more tedious and lucrative in a country like malaysia(according to Wikipedia)

The differences between B.sc and B.sc(ed) is the education aspect. Most of ur courses in sch will be from computer science dept u will only take two or three courses per semester in education dept. U will also go 4 ur teaching practice in a secondary sch in ur year 3 and 4. So at d end of the day u will b able to teach computer sci in a second sch level. Ur final year project will also b from educatn dept not computer sci.

After graduation u can decide to take a career in edu or science. Havin connection will help u a lot. This is Nigeria. Also graduate with a good result. It also helps in the labour market

Let's clear the air on this.

IN NIGERIA,
Bsc(Ed), BA(Ed) is in fact an education degree. It's just taking a major subject in a specified faculty and specializing on training teachers on that subject,for them to teach at the secondary school level.

As a Bsc(ed), you are trained majorly for teaching or lecturing and not for industry. Instead of IT, you do teaching practice, and your project is in Education and not even in your other major course.

IMO, In Nigeria, its better to have Bsc than Bsc(ed) especially if you want to have a great chance of working in the industry.

in summary, its easier for one with BSc to become a lecturer than Bsc(ed) to work in industry.

In Physics Education for example,the kind of courses they offer are tailored at being taught in the secondary school level,they don't do cutting edge courses in Physics that has to do with research.

Indeed, u're misinformed. I studied Maths Edu (B.Sc. Ed.) in my first degree b4 I decided to go for M.Sc. Maths in UI for that matter. U're just ignorantly been deceitful here. I would want you to deliver yourself from lies b4 u conclude on fallacy. Go and ask, many guys are industries through graduate trainee with their BSc. Ed. Anyway, if you have chosen to continue this way, I won't bother to reply u again. To others who have B. Sc. Ed., don't allow this kind of being to derail you on ur career path. As a B.Sc. Ed. By the way, where did u graduate from that students of Science/Education only offer half of science courses? Which university is that? In some schls science education students offer all science courses with education courses, and in some others students offer most courses from science Dept's with education courses. And if there is any science course they won't offer, that will be elective in 400L which may not be more than one or two. It is evident that u're not from any of the universities I mentioned earlier because that would have purged u of ur ignorance. Kindly help by letting me know ur university where science education students offer only half of science courses. At least, I did my BSc. And most departments nearly exhaust the maximum credit.
Now,tell me how someone will take enough education courses and also enough science courses without exhausting the maximum allowed credit. And both the Bsc. student and the Bsc.(Ed) students have the same 4 years to finish up their coursework.

That simply means those guys will only stop at attending lectures at the end of 200L in science Dept's, and u claim common sense is free? How on earth will a university issue a B.Sc. Ed. Cert to someone who is not well groomed? Anyway, I will advise u go back to your university and seek help from your lecturers. I am sure they will offer free deliverance for you from your ignorance. You still haven't provided an answer to my question.
How will a Bsc(Ed). finish the coursework of his Bsc. counterparts without exceeding the maximum units provided by the school,given that both of them have the same 4 years to complete their coursework.

Finally let me layout the structure of Bsc. and Bsc(Ed) in my discipline(Physics) for my university.
100 level: Bsc(Ed) and Bsc students offer the same core courses in Physics/ Math,infact we did all the math courses of 100 level.
Total number of physics courses done:6 for both Bsc and Bsc(Ed) students

200 level:Bsc(Ed) and Bsc students offer the same core courses,only that electives were chosen from faculty of education for Bsc(Ed) students,and electives from faculty of physical sciences for Bsc students.
Total number of physics courses done:7 for both Bsc and Bsc(Ed) students

300 level(The difference begin here): Bsc students offer all core physics courses,which is 12 in total and also 3 required courses from math( completing the maximum allowed credit of 48). While Bsc(Ed) students offer just 6 out of the twelve completing their credits in courses of the faculty of education.
Total number of physics courses done:12 for Bsc students and 6 for Bsc(Ed) students

400 level: Out of 35 physics courses to chose from,Bsc students are required to select a minimum of 14 courses for the session. While only 11 of the 35 courses is available to Bsc(Ed) students to choose from.
And they are allowed to choose between 5 and 6 completing their remaining credit at the faculty of Education.
Total number of physics courses done:14-16 for both Bsc students 5-6 for Bsc(Ed) students.



So from this analysis,you can see that we didn't do the same number of physics courses throughout our stay in the university. And mind you,i can confidently say that I did 50-60% of Bsc Math entire coursework but still I can't outrightly say I am equal and superior to Bsc Math students/graduates. Bsc Math students only did 4 Physics courses in 100 level and that's all.

And moreover Project topics in Bsc and Bsc(Ed) is a clear indication that they are not the same.

In Bsc Physics for example,your project might have you researching on latest cutting edge technologies,fabricating stuffs,or do a pure mathematical analysis of a physical system.

While in Bsc(Ed) Physics your project might have you researching on how to improve the standard of teaching Physics at the secondary school level, or taking about how the teaching of specific areas of Physics will benefit the society at large. And so on.
