I predicted on this forum that Buhari will bring decree number 4 in a different disguise and lo and behold its already happening . I suggest everyone should study all of buhari laws when he was a military head of state because we are in trouble. Next law Nigeria name change to Islamic Republic of nigeria .

if they ever pass that bill

this country is gone

and sincerely hope they build more prisons

because nigerians will never be cowarded into bullshit

no matter how they try, degree 4 can never be enforced in this democratic country. I can't say am sorry for those that voted APC in power because is affecting everybody now.

For this bill to even be brought up in the senate is a sacrilege. this is outrageous.

indirect way of reversing freedom of information given to us by GEJ! i think any politician who blow lies during campaign should also be jailed! they have been broadcasting lies on social media without any punishment ! this is jargon! it remind me of Animal Farm by George Orwell , all animals are equal but some are more equals than the others!

This Senate has shown that they have nothing to offer us. While other countries' senators are making laws that would help move them to a better place, ours are taking us back a decade with every move/ law they make. As if it wasn't disappointing enough that they launched a suggestion box in 2015, they're also trying to gag the social media. Makes one wonder if this is actually a democracy or a dictactorship by civilians. May God help Nigeria.

Buhari and APC want to control media freedom in Nigeria, and Mr. Lai Mohammed is already going around the country paying out $10,000 each to bloggers to stop writing anything against the government.

We're back to dictatorship!.

Drafted on March 29,1984, Decree No. 4 was the most dreaded, most repressive and the last press law enacted in Nigeria. It was promulgated during the military regime of Major General Buhari which did not take kindly to press criticisms.

The law was drafted to punish authors of false statements and reports that exposed the Buhari administration and or its officials to ridicule or contempt.
Section 1, sub-sections (i), (ii) and (iii) of the law - the most formidable section - provided that:
Any person who publishes in any form, whether written or otherwise, any message, rumour, report or statement, being a message, rumour, statement or report which is false in any material particular or which brings or is calculated to bring the Federal Military Government or the Government of a state or public officer to ridicule or disrepute, shall be guilty of an offence under this Decree

If he did this as a military man, why is he attempting to repeat it as a democratically elected president

I see nothing wrong with this bill...lack of understanding, sentiment and ignorance is the main issue here. The bill simple seeks to criminalize making false claims and accusations without evidence or truth. So all those condemning the Senate should take a second look at the intent of the bill. I will always support social media freedom but not freedom of false and baseless accusations.

bunch of dunce head legislators who don't care about people' welfare or wellbeing, misplaced priority every time,. Is this the right bill at the moment? is this the most pressing issue at the moment?
The leadership class are in for it,this is a backlash of their undoing. When you fail to take care of your children by providing for their needs, they'd fine a way to survive which include robbing you. You now employ vigilante to help deal with the robber ?
The bloggers are just trying to survive by any means necessary apart from stealing.

what's wrong in passing a bill on employment generation, or to declare state of emergency on employment ? sometimes I feel like slapping all these legislooters undecided

Wonderful!

We warned Nigerians against voting a dictator and tyrant, they said he is a Born Again Democract.

We warned that APC is a party that will kill freedom of speech and expression, they are chanting CHANGE.

You could all see that despite GEJ signing the FOI Bill, all APC states refused to domesticate the bill, even Fashola (SAN) went to court to challenge and defend why he is not obliged to domesticate.

Una eyes go soon clear.

Gradually all the freedom we enjoyed in the last administration which due to our misuse and ingrate attitude led to the downfall of administration will now be removed from us. They rose to power through falsehood and propaganda, an evil mechanism they don't want another to use against them. To stop that, even your genuine expression of dissatisfaction must be stopped. Next, even your tauted power to remove them through the ballot will be secretly taken away from you by placing their own to head the commission.
