If you read your bible the right way up instead of upside down, you'll notice the reason why his action displeased God was because of the deceitfulness involved. He could have simply refused instead of pretending and actually having sex with the woman.

In the meantime, the major reason why Judah was in that area to begin with (imo) was because he was most likely looking for information about his brother who he and his siblings had sold into slavery.

Therefore, for Onan's actions to have such a consequence, something more serious was clearly at stake.

from the timing, we see Judah's presence in that area was after his brother was sold and he was most likely looking for him and sending word out of the same. He married and had children there who were probably supposed to be helping in that search perhaps, in some way. Onan's action showed he considered Joseph dead or irredeemable. I hope he did not have a hand in Joseph's perils in Egypt, because after that, we are told of Potiphar's wife's attempt to kill Joseph through a false accusation.


In essence, Onan was attempting to end his brother's, if not his father's line which perhaps he did not identify with.

Juda is the Father of Er, Onan, and Shela. Er died because of wickeness, and left a widow. Onan was obligated to help keep Er's progenity going, but since the kids won't bear his name, he enjoyed the sex but won't get her pregnant. So he too was killed.
The reason he was killed was not becos he spilled outside, but the DECEIT of pretending to people around but not actually doing what was expected of him. Remember then, the Hebrew stock needed to increase numerically.
The same deceit that killed Ananeas and Saphira.
@Istpia8. Judah was preview to what happened to Joseph. He was the 4th Son of Jacob, the one who wasn't part of that conspiracy was Ruben, the First. But he was a coward. He could not stand up as the first of them all to object to their evil schemes.
Judah wasn't searching for Joseph, he knew Joseph was a slave somewhere in Egypt. He was part of the gang that killed an animal, soaked Joseph's garment and took it to their father.
Are we forgetting why they wanted Joseph out of the way in the first place?
See guys. Most of the time, its not what we do, but why we did what. Motive.

Personally I don't even believe sex is a sin except if you do it with someone married to another person. God created us and say be fruitful n multiply and He made sex enjoyable so that we would not be able to do without it. How is it e sin let alone withdrawal.

Everything about sex is sinful as long as you are not doing it with your wife ....onan was doing it with his brothers wife which is already a sin .....some chu rches advocates withdrawal method e.g catholic church , they believe contraception is sin.

Fornication and Adultery are forbidden and totally not what God expects His children to do.

Haba! People who interprete bible like this are the problems of the church. Imagine! This story in the bible is clear enough to be understood with a plain mind, not to just manipulate to build a sinful doctrine please. As at then, It was permitted for brothers to re-marry their late brothers wife for the purpose of giving birth on behalf of the dead so their generation wont be wipe off. That was even before the Law of Moses was given. God here just judged that man for his evil thoughts. He was just sleeping with the widow and was not ready to impregnate her to have a child in the name of the late brother. This is just God's way of telling us that he rules in the affairs of men.
