Some people expect us to behave like Europeans.
but we are Africans. we are Nigerians.
There are so many reasons people behave the way they do. People line up before boarding so that they can find space to put their carry on bags. smiley smiley smiley
They rush out of the planes because of immigration wahala at the airport. The heat and queue alone. The stress of getting your luggage etc.
There are many reasons why we behave the way we do. And these things make us special. We must not always judge ourselves by silly European standards.

Here Someone asked me why I love signing anytime I pass by. The tradition is that they all put on head phones. I hate head phones and they are risky in traffic. Lots of accidents and near misses occur due to the use of earphones here. Despite the good traffic and pedestrian safety provisions.
I told him it is a thing I learnt from my parents. It is African. My mum sings when doing the lundry, my dad hums a tune. Infact at times they both sing the same song. It is not to impress anybody. Call it slave mentality bla bla bla. It is something that makes me happy. I sing songs that give me hope and encourage me. Besides I told him I see a lot of them sing out loud even with the ear phone on. So why should mine be different?
While I am learning to observe and respect their norms, I cannot wait to come home and sing to my hearts content.
cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy. By the way my screen savers and desktop photos are only beautiful sites in Nigeria. Fellow students see it and ask ''Is this Nigeria? It is beautiful''.
smiley nice... I also love d little things that make us who we are. It actually amuses me and kind of makes me happy. I alwayz wonder why it annoys some ppl. I argue with friends all the time wen dey complain about naija.

No one is saying Nigerians should copy all the behaviour they see from the Europeans but it become depressing when a people have no sense of value and ethics.

Whether we accept it or not, Nigeria has a lot of catching up to do. If some of you are happy with being Nigerian by breaking all known laws of order and sanity, some of us aren't.

You are so on point. While its always good to be true to yourself but while in public you have to be mindful of one's behaviour. Not everyone is exuberant. Not everyone wants to hear you talking to your mother loudly. N ot evryone wants to hear your kind of music (use earphones).

Being orderly is not European (Does it mean the reserve Japanese are always trying to imitate Europeans), Its an embodiment of a civilized human.

My dear, you're simply justifying disorder and confusion. You're simply justifying very terrible national values.

I don't believe it's about following some silly European standards like you put it BUT it's about living with some sanity and sensible values as a people. Nigerians live like they're going to die tomorrow- always in a hurry to NOWHERE. Many of us Nigerians aren't truly happy with the terrible habits most Nigerians exhibit.

I was on a flight to PH from Lagos some years back. As soon as the pilot announced our descent into the PH airport I could see the impatience and confusion amongst us. It's like some of us wanted to fly out from the plane. That was the most disgusting attitude I've witnessed abroad a plane. Would you call that a sensible and civilised behaviour? Is that the sane procedure into the advanced Asian nations?

What about almost everyone shouting over the phone before the plane even landed? Why the immigration wahala? Because we don't have a working system.

i can understand your position, but this behaviours are not only by nigerians. Its the same with most african countries especially the under developed ones.

Lemme add mine: People shouts at the pilot for overspeeding

Someone says 'Let us pray' before take-off.

How so? It's only a sign of well done and thanks, pilot. That's how I see it. Not funny to me. Just like when your team scores a goal... Goals are the objective of the game. Flying and landing safely is the objective, so when it is achieved, a round of applause is in order., yes?

A thoroughly civilised man is one who doesn't allow his enjoyments to interfere with the serenity of another man.

Yes. Being orderly isn't actually a European thing but the hallmark of every sensible people. Well, Nigerians are always good with coming up with lousy excuses for their bad manners. The Japanese example is so apt.

Somehow the values of these great nations plays out in their standard of living. The more chaotic a people are, the more primitive their living conditions.

This bullshit we talk or write about ourselves is what makes us feeble in the eyes of the international community,I wonder when we'll start joking about wonderful and good things that happen in our country.

Because thats the way we truly behave and its apparent to the international community.

Every set of people in this world have their own set of peculairity wherever you come in close contact with them. These behavior in the plane is not uncommon with flights to Indian; Pakistan; FAr East and some parts of Middle East. You will regret been on the plane with these nationals.

If u fly from Europe or Americas to then take a connecting flight from Europe to Lagos, the flight is usually Civil and Calm, but once you board Europe to Lagos, its is a totally different ball game. Worst are flights like Lufthansa or Air France to Lagos where you have diff Nigerians converging from Austria; Germany; Poland and such like on your flight, trust me, you shall not have peace through out the flight. Same goes for East African flights from Nairobi and Addis Ababa to Nigeria, they are always noisy as you have a congregation of Far East; Middle East Nigerian passengers.

We just need to be more considerate of others...thats all

Thank you. i understand your point.
And I am pointing out the fact that I have seen worse overseas. Some of these things are not limited to Nigerians alone. While I sense the humor in your topic let us not forget that we are the only ones who do these things. As a matter of fact Air France, Paris to Toulouse on the 13th of November. What was the excuse?

''ah well...They are French people they are most times impatient. If the weather is bad they complain and if the whether is good they complain more'' .

and there was laughter. That was what I was told. And they laughed about it. This is where everything works. Right in the heart of Europe. It is even the people who claim to be orderly and not confused that do not obey rules to turn off their phones. Both in Local flights in Nigeria. They are practically lawless. And I have seen them argue for hours too overseas. On why they are right.

Abegi make we leave story. I am just saying, while we bad mouth Nigeria let us not be misled and then throw away the things that make us special as a people. We like to talk loud. That is us. Our voices are not shrill. There are so many things we call disorder that the people who taught us the word ''disorder'' in English will say it makes them resilient and bold. Nigerians are bold and proud. That is how I see it.

So while I understand the fact that we need to do away with some negative national values, we need to also see if these are strong points that make us special. We are proud, strong, brilliant, dogged people.

As a Naijan is really difficult to avoid Religion. Its pervading.

This environment will rob you of your sanity if you don't create an internal serene one for yourself. I'm a Christian but I'm totally averse to all the nonsense people do in the name of Christianity.

You've got to define your life by your own standards. I agree it's very difficult to become indifferent to religion in a society that's drunk with religion but you can limit or reduce the madness. If you must find peace, then you've got to be in control of your life.

Let's leave the story. No nation or system is perfect since it's comprised of imperfect humans but the summary is, we need to behave more patiently and orderly. It's got NOTHING to do with being a European or not. Nice learning from you. Bye.
