Am sure she didn't study in Nigeria. Please guys I have a question, I have a friend who studied law in the UK, she is intending to come work in a Nigerian firm according to her.

What I need to understand is, is the Law universal? I had thought each country has her law and cases which are particular to a her, how then can someone study law in another country and practice it in another.

Please no abuses, it's just an honest question that deserves an honest and simple answer.

The law is not universal.English law is different from Nigerian Law.Before your friend can practise in Nigeria ,she needs to apply for Bar Part 1&2 at the Nigeria Law School and pass the qualifying exams.For Nigerian Graduates only Bar 2 is required

Thanks, That was insightful, I know this is a question I should be asking her. But I'd rather not for numerous reasons, she's currently doing her master's.

Another question I would like to ask is, do lawyers get immediate employment after law school (as doctors do), or do they have to search for jobs like everyone else? What's the prospect

did she study pure law? or another branch of law like civil law or international law, that's why she has to go to law sch here in naija so no matter d kinda law she studied d amount of time she spends in law sch ours will be indoctrinated in her brain grin

I don't know, I didn't ask, didn't want to appear too inquisitive (what kind of friend u may ask), we seldom talk about our career and family.

Plus I don't know anything about law, so I couldn't have asked the right questions.

Usually when you study law outside Nigeria, in order to practice in here you are required to do Bar 1 in Nigeria Law School before joining Nigerian Law graduates to finish up and be called to Nigerian Bar.

@martyns303

I note that you have received the correct answer to your question given by others in the house. Just to reiterate the answer, if you study law abroad and you intend to practice law in another country outside the one you studied in, then you have to get acquainted with the legal system and laws of the country in which you intend to practice in; which would mean further studies.

In your friends case, if they intend to go to Nigeria to practice law, THEY NEED TO PASS THROUGH THE NIGERIAN LAW SCHOOL. Also note that they have to complete the NYSC PROGRAM as well. If they are below 30 years after completing their first law degree (LLB) within Nigeria or abroad then they would have to complete the NYSC program too before they can even think of practicing law in Nigeria. Hope this would help your friend.

I rest my case
