cybermic007:
The Senior Staff Association of the Nigerian Universities has called for an indefinite strike on December 24, 2015 to protest a recent decision of the Federal Government to sack 2,000 university workers across the country by January, 2016.

The National President of SSANU, Mr. Samson Ugwoke, said during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday that the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission, and the National Universities Commission had written letters of termination to 2,000 members of staff of the universities.

Ugwoke said that the senior staff union of the universities had already dispatched letters to the Ministry of Education, the NUC and the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission to withdraw the letters of termination issued to varsity workers of the University of Ilorin, Federal University of Technology, Akure, Usman Dan Fodio University, Sokoto and others.

He said that SSANU also urged the Education Ministry and the other agencies to ensure immediate withdrawal of similar letters to vice chancellors to terminate the appointment of personnel of university staff primary schools.

He said the letter dated December 17, 2015 also copied President Muhammadu Buhari, the President of Senate, Bukola Saraki, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige and others.

Ugwoke added that the 2,000 workers affected in the planned retrenchment exercise were drawn from 31 universities and were employed by the councils of the various institutions to make the requisite contribution to educational development in the institutions and the society over the years.

The SSANU leader noted that the directive to sack the workers who are expected to leave service in January 2016 was contained in a circular said to have been written and signed by a Deputy Director in the Ministry of Education, Mr. E.O Fayemi, on behalf of the minister.

He stated further that the circular dated April 21, 2015, was attached with a memorandum and report from the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission dated March 2014 and February 2014 respectively.

According to him, the commission responded to the circular by directing the removal of personnel of staff schools and other institutions affiliated to the universities from the payroll.

He said, “The implementation of this directive would be a gross violation and breach of the SSANU/FGN 2009 Agreement, which explicitly stated that the University shall bear full capital and recurrent cost of University Staff primary schools.

“It is further shocking to note that till date, the Federal Ministry of Defence still funds the capital and recurrent costs of over 100 Army Children Schools, Command Children Schools, Navy Primary Schools and Air Force Schools; while the Ministry of Police Affairs still funds its Police Children Schools, all from the Federal Treasury.

“We are surprised that an agency of government, the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, could continue with this callous, wicked, insensitive and ill-intentioned agenda, despite our calls, letters, press releases and publications on the issue.

“With the advent of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, we had written series of public and confidential letters on same with no positive response.”

He said that 90 per cent of the pupils of the university staff schools were children of the staff of the institutions stressing that the schools were established alongside other academic components of the universities in some cases.

The unionist said SSANU had to give the December 24, 2015 deadline to the Federal Government as part of the efforts to prevent the over 2000 workers of the universities from being sacked.

Several efforts by Saturday PUNCH to get the response of ASUU National President, Dr. Nasir Fagge, was resisted because he said, “I am out of the country and you don’t expect me to answer you from abroad.”

Also when contacted, the Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister of State for Education, Anthony Akuneme, directed our correspondent to the office of the Education Minister, Adamu Adamu.

But several calls and SMS to the Assistant Director of Press in the Education Ministry, Abdul Onu, were not replied.

G What did you put in place for the schools to run? Lagos is a metropolis that is why ISL can effectively be managed without hiccups are you asking a federal school in maiduguri or benue or ekiti or ebonyi that has scanty federal infrastructures coupled with comatose power supply to generate money and pay fees? If you compare Faan with universities in terms of revenue generation and workers buoyancy you need help.....do you know that some universities pay supporting lecturers with IGR? they maintain school environment, security, hostel renovation and even employ some supporting staffs. Bro, the government should just do the needful. You gave a man a cutlass and ask him to challenge a lion...thinking you have empowered him (cutlass) is laughable.
Maybe you should ask the University administrators and the staff union that decided to have a staff school, which the size of their financial muscles cannot support nor sustain. If they do not have the core advantages and know-how for the establishment and running of a private primary and secondary school, it makes business and management sense for them to send their children to schools within the community rather than establishing such schools and expect FG to help with funding and payment of salaries.

I am not comparing Universities with FAAN, but compared the staff unions in both organisations. Do you know that some staff unions in the universities get loans running into hundreds of millions from the bank, nothing stops them from using such loans to establish a school for their children which they love.

Which supporting staff are they paying from IGR, that NUC does not have in their records as part of the labour and manpower in the Universities. These are just avenues for some University administrators to deplete income from IGR, what we need in our universities and other organisations is transparency and accountability. Education business is a goldmine, maybe the time has come for the University staff unions, cooperative societies and University administrator to harness the opportunities provided by these need gaps in the society.

You are the one that do not understand anything. This is not the only circular they met in that office. The fact that he is the one issuing sack letters means he is the one sacking them. If they met a list of prospective employees, would they go ahead to employ the people? Never. They will tear it up and prepare their own.

why exactly are you making a definitive statement that he should have canceled the order?

My last post was to educate intellectually challenged morons like you that for good or for bad, the decision was taken by the last administration. I made no step to say whether it was a bad thing or not. That is left for others to decide. What is clear - and what I have to emphasize - is that this process was kicked off by the GEJ administration.

If the Buhari administration reviews this and decides their complaints have merit, it may yet be rescinded. Still doesn't change the fact that your precious 'hero of democracy' was the President when this decision was taken.

Of course, no surprise that you poorly educated clowns would not appreciate my last post.

Don't mind him. Buhari came in a reversed the GEJ appointments and recruitments and they hailed him, but now he is sacking based on same scenario and templates they are now attributing it to GEJ's policy.

Even an idiot will marvel at the idiocy exhibited by these folks.

Am not really in support of the retrenchment but they never gave a good reasons not to sack them, besides we all know how the systems work. Close investigation will show that those listed are due to retire or are just Ghost workers or non existing workers.

Kudos to the Federal Government.

Sai Buhari.

The reasons they gave sounds stupid, the words in bold was his reason not knowing that those kids can become orphans at any point in time due to the nature of there parents work while the so called sacked staff are not in danger related to there work.

That man needs some beatings from Buratai.
Thanks for that apt observation. I really don't support retrenchment but sometimes is unavoidable.

I honestly think punch newspaper needs to be called to order for using such a sensational headline even when the contents of the news says a different thing entirely.
It's clearly stated in the article that the circular was issued in April 2015 and we all knew that buhari only took over in may 2015,so how is buhari responsible for their sack?
I only want to passionately appeal to buhari to have mercy on these people and reverse the callous circular issued by the wicked gej administration.
And to people who would not read before commenting, you're only confirming the degrading adage about Africans that if you want to hide anything from an African, just put in books!

If it's valid then why are people blaming Jonathan for an act that is not irregular? He should be commended instead. Buhari is complicit in this action because it was an action in continuum that crystallized in his reign.

Please endeavour to always read, digest and comprehend before making comments. I am talking about a university staff school making that sum. A university cannot have a staff school which charges fees and expect the FG to pay for the running cost. The school fees paid by parents in these staff schools goes to the university and not the FG.
