The Federal Government has plans to concession the management of the Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Kano airports to private investors. The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, made the disclosure on Wednesday in Lagos during a fact-finding tour of facilities and agencies at the Murtala Muhammed Airport. He was accompanied by the Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika; Director-General, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Muhtar Usman; Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Saleh Dunoma; and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, Ibrahim Abdulsalam; as well as the Director-General, Nigeria Meteorological Agency, Dr. Anthony Anuforom, among others. The minister said the planned concession of the four airports was to guarantee efficiency and good management in view of dwindling resources from the government for infrastructural development in the aviation industry. Although, Amaechi did not disclose the airports that would be privatised, there were indications that the Lagos airport; the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja; the Port Harcourt International Airport; and the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano were the aerodromes slated for concession. Amaechi also gave December 2016 as the deadline for the completion of the four major international airport terminals under construction in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Kano. He stated that after completion, the Lagos airport would handle 15 million passengers annually, while the others would handle additional 15 million passengers to bring the total traffic to 30 million passengers annually. The minister said, “The new terminal in Lagos will generate additional 15 million passengers annually, making a total of 30 million passengers yearly nationwide. The medium and long-term plans will require significant investments to upgrade and expand infrastructure to meet current and future requirements. “As a result of limited resources for capital project development, the government is exploring the possibility of private sector participation towards the realisation of the industries’ potential.” The minister stated that there would no sacred cows in the recovery of debts owed the various agencies. Collectively, Nigerian carriers are said to owe NAMA, NCAA, NCAT and NIMET over N4bn in Passenger Service Charge and Ticket Sales Charge, prompting the NCAA to give them a two-week ultimatum to pay up or be grounded. http://saharareporters.com/2015/12/24/federal-government-privatize-airports-lagos-abuja-kano-and-port-harcourt |

Not a bad idea. PPP (Private-Public partnership) works better though. KLIA is one of the best airports in the world, and it is 'private-funded' mostly. A good number of countries are considering this approach now. |

Smooyis:The federal government shouldn't be in the airport business. The airports should be concessioned/sold to companies or state govts. 1 Like |

No privatization in Nigeria has given good result. It either create more gap between the rich and the poor (more big boyz/Family) or sell us cheaply to foreigners. The best way to go is for government to sell part of its shares to core investors and partly to the public who are the initial owners. Privatization of NITEL, Ajaokuta steal company, Eleme Petrochemicals, NigerDock and other National interests (especially OBJ era) has not been in overall interest or achieved its purpose. 2 Likes |

Not a bad idea if it will be done properly. So far, most of the privatised public enterprises have not been privatised properly. I hope it will be done properly this time around. 2 Likes |

I don't think privatizing is a good idea for our airports and ports. Giving maintenance contracts is a better idea. Government must always be in charge of the ports. |

APC sharing Nigeria since 1300 bc . So tinubu gets lagos and amechi gets ph. Atiku or elrufai gets kano. |

Privatization in Nigeria is a euphemism for selling off our shared heritage to politicians and their cronies. Standards would fall down the drains. They would cut corners to save cost. Take the old Nepa and Nitel as a case studies. Nigeria already has a terrible air safety record. Disaster waiting to happen. |

mekaboy:Lol! That's a balanced ownership structure Seriously, the "big 5" airports - Abuja, Enugu, Lagos, Kano, and PH shouldn't be sold for no less than N40bn combined. |
Re: FG To Privatize Airports by HopeAtHand: 8:22am On Dec 25, 2015 |
CFCman: Big 5!!!. Which big 5?. Where did you see Enugu on the list. Someone is forcefully trying to insert Enugu where it does not belong. |

brunofarad:U honestly cant say there are no improvements with phcn. Privatisation is the way to go |
Re: FG To Privatize Airports by Nobody: 8:35am On Dec 25, 2015 |
HopeAtHand:Remember that the airports listed in the report is mere speculation. We don't yet know the specific airports that will be concessioned. But according to data from FAAN, these are the busiest airports (both domestic and int'l passenger numbers) in order - Lagos, Abuja, Kano, PH and Enugu. That's why I call them the big 5. |

Great Right move in the right direction. I have always said that government does not have business in management of companies but provide level ground, policies and control/regulations in place for optimal benefit from the private sector. Hopefully MMIA will cease to become an eyesore it is. Do good for good to come your way 1 Like |
