On the other line was a young man of say mid-twenties in age telling me he mistakenly typed in my phone number when facebook requested for his pin. I told him I received the messages and would send them via sms. He flashed my phone a few moments later as a reminder and I sent the most recent pin to him.

Don't understand the above?
He sounded like a full grown adult; 25 years old and above.
I received multiple smses telling me what the pin was for my facebook account but no account name was specified in the text. It means he tried logging into my account using my email address but didn't know my password hence the multiple text messages I kept receiving.

Lalasticlala I think this news should hit frontpage to aware unsuspecting nairalanders like myself ten minutes ago.

I'm a casual facebook user. Many times I can go for weeks without checking my account. Most of my friends know this and have no problem.
Today I was in church when I received five random messages from facebook saying the pin to access my account're xxxx, xxxx and xxxx. Not understanding what the message was since it didn't refer to my account directly I paid the message no mind.
After church service an unknown contact started calling my phone, giving me ten missed calls at a go. Wondering who this was and if was an urgent call from a potential employer I quickly picked up the phone. On the other line was a young man of say mid-twenties in age telling me he mistakenly typed in my phone number when facebook requested for his pin. I told him I received the messages and would send them via sms. He flashed my phone a few moments later as a reminder and I sent the most recent pin to him.

Fast forward about thirty minutes later, I received whatsapp messages from five of my friends telling me I've asked them via facebook for an urgent amount of N50,000.00 to get deposited in a strange account without any of my details attached. It was then it finally clicked that I willingly gave these fraudsters, these rogues, these animals in human skin the pin to access my facebook account for a free-for-all scam on all my facebook contacts. Immediately I changed my facebook password and announced on my timeline my account was recently compromised.

I don't know how to end this but I'd say; the same way people wake up and plan their way on how to remain productive to society is the very same way some people wake up with the incentive of defrauding others out of their hard earned pay. I don't know how these people sleep at night or live with themselves but may we have no reason to cross paths with them.

Merry Christmas everybody. Enjoy the holidays.

M sorry but this sounds a little dumb. You don't have to know Facebook sef to understand you shouldn't give out your password, pin, pan no (for banks) or C.V.V code.

Why did you pass on your password to someone over the phone? What for? Makes no sense to me.

He mistakingly put in your phone no and he needs your pin/password to do what? Log out or what? #confusedmuch

This actually happened to my aunt in Canada. Same process. The fraudster then text one of my aunt friend using my aunt phone number and requesting for $500.

My aunt friend was surprised not because my aunt asked her $500, but because she received the request via text. The friend then asked my aunt to call her so she could speak to her. The fraudster immediately text that he was driving and cldnt text.

My aunt friend then called my aunt and they both found out that a scammer has been playing them. They wasted the fraudsters time untill he stopped texting.

Beware of scammers and be at alert.

Change the privacy settings on your Facebook page to hide your friends list. No one will see your friends to send messages to them.
I've never thought of this. Thank you. I'd consider this.

OP, your Facebook privacy settings must be really lax. Probably means your phone number on Facebook is visible to all. You need to lock your account down.

I have NEVER and WILL NEVER provide Facebook my phone number.

Hahahahahahaha. This isn't new. I fell victim of same thing some years ago. Just exactly like this. I lost my Facebook account to the idiot. He changed the email and everything I could use to get my account back almost immediately. Dude was so fast and smart. The idiot was even calling to ask for my security answer. Hahahahaha.

Well, that was how I quit Facebook till date

no, it's simple. It's just a matter of him resetting your password. Which Facebook will send to your email and phone number, when it does, he calls you up asking for the password link. Claiming he mistakenly used your digits for his account setting which you will ignorantly send to him. He immediately uses the link to set the password which automatically gives him access to your account. I once fell victim

hey op.... a friend of my did it to me long time ago, lets say like 2 years or so.... i didnt know what it meant until now that u av mention it... buh known of my friends complained about anybody requesting them to send a certain sum....pls can u enlighten me more...
Once the person had access to my account he sent a message(as me) claiming he was low on funds and needed an urgent transfer into his account. He claimed my account was having problems so the money had to go into a friend's(his original) account. He then posted a Lagos state bank account knowing fully well my facebook details point out my location is in port harcourt. I guess that was what raised my friends' guards and they alerted me via whatsapp messages.

Gbege, Those guys probably use your phone number to create the account. This is what I suggest you can do
Makes more sense than concluding they guessed my email address.

Use the phone number as the user ID and request for a password reset. Facebook will authenticate by sending you a Pin.
Already done and dusted. Thanks.

OK, the person that is behind that scam is someone that knows you.. He/she may not be the one that called, but he is the one that gave them your information.. A friend of mine in Italy recently tried something like that with me, but immediately the message to reset my password came in, I already know wats happening..
Re: A New Scam Yahoo Boys Have Invented. by Nobody: 4:29pm On Dec 25, 2015
That's the only way out. It's not even advisable to put up your number. That's the number one mistake

Some use innocent boys like beggars, bus conductors to register scam lines for them. So if there is any account number for any lodgemnt, inform the police, the fraudster can be traced through his BVN.

The scam is so cheap it works.
If you check the message facebook sends for your new account pin, it makes no mention of what account name you are about to change details for. Not knowing what account the pin was linked to made me believe the person on the other end of the line.
I'm very sure many have fallen for this trick and even after reading this many would still fall.
Very dumb, how did he get your number?

1. Your instinct should tell you immediately that your account was about to be compromised immediately you received that message.

2. If he typed your number in error, he could restart the recovery process using the right number.

You just gave him access to your Facebook and Whatsapp account!. You're probably using same password for both. I wonder why a Nairalander could still make such a silly mistake after all the info on this forum.

He must have changed your password already. Login to facebook and change your password within the next 24 hours or you wouldn't be able to do that again.

Op tnx for d info.

Pls save d callers number. Since it's registered, u may need it in d future.
If u know u wanna do sumtin shady wit ur line will u register it wit d correct info? So u c it can't hlp. Even the account am sure was opened wit a false info (fake name nd address in drivers license + an old deliberately ugly pix that won't be recognized ).

And the OP shouldn't be worried coz a scam like this can never work. Only an extremely dumb person will borrow a friend money with only conversation on Facebook. Probably he's after something else.

If he's a smart scammer (which he might be) asking for money from ur friends might not be wots he's really after (that's just a decoy, a small pawn in a larger scam plan) just be careful OP, because you never know when u might jam a really smart strategic scammer.

I totally agree with you in this case but, sometimes it is not for fraudulent sake (nt talking about the 50k request part)
There was a time i lost my mtn line wch i used in registering my 2go account without retrieving. I had to call the person who bought my old but reactivated line to help me retrieve my 2go password but he refused, thinking that I was a 419er, so I had to stay clear.
