Ighalo: I Can’t Say No To Dream Man United Move
7 Jan 2016 Headlines

Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo appears to been keen on to Manchester United.

The Watford star has been in sensational form this season, scoring 14 goals in his debut Premier League campaign, and Manchester United are in need of a prolific centre forward given their recent lack of goals.

Atletico Madrid have been strongly linked with Ighalo but he has surprisingly admitted a switch to Old Trafford would be a dream come true.

“There has been speculation from Spain and Italy but I’ve played there and now want to play in England,” Ighalo told The Sun.

“I don’t think I will be moving but I’m not sure I’d say no if United called.
“They were my team growing up. I loved watching Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke on TV.

“They were my idols and playing at Old Trafford has always been a dream.”

CAF COACH OF 2015:- Herve Renard Ahead of Amuneke

Hervé Renard

U17 World Cup-winning coach Emmanuel Amuneke will most likely surrender the CAF Coach of the year 2015 to Herve Renard, who led Cote d’Ivoire to win a long-awaited AFCON in Equatorial Guinea in February.

The 2015 AFCON win was after 23 years of wait by the Ivorians who last celebrated AFCON success in 1992.

Renard also led unfancied Zambia to win the 2012 AFCON in Gabon, incidentally at the expense of Cote d’Ivoire.

Former FC Barcelona winger Amuneke, on the other hand, led Nigeria to win the FIFA U17 World Cup in November in Chile.

Many had written off the team after they failed to win the CAF U17 championship in Niger Republic but the former African Footballer of the Year proved his critics wrong by making the team unbeatable at the World Cup.

The team showed they are well-coached with their display and Amuneke proved to be a technically sound coach to the extent that the FIFA Study Group noted his tactics.

Etoile du Sahel coach Fawzi Benzarti led the Tunisian club to successful season in 2015 by winning the CAF Confederation Cup and Tunisia President's Cup.

CAF Champions League-winning coach with TP Mazembe Patrice Carteron is also a nominee for this award category.

Profile:
Name: Emmanuel Amuneke
Date of birth: 25th December, 1970

Playing career
Concord FC (defunct), Julius Berger, Zamalek, Sporting Lisbon,
Barcelona, Albercete, Busan l'Cons, Al Wahdat.

Managerial career
Al Hazm (Saudi Arabia) Assistant coach - 2008
Julius Berger coach - 2008-2009
Ocean Boys coach - 2009 - 2011

GALLERY: Unlucky Ones - Legends who failed to win the African Footballer of the Year award

AUSTINE OKOCHA (Nigeria) - The unluckiest of all having lost narrowly thrice. Jay Jay was top scorer and MVP at the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations plus one of the five Africans in the Fifa greatest 100 footballers short list

FINIDI GEORGE (Nigeria) - One of the greatest wingers ever and was so good that Madrid & Barcelona queued for him. The Champions League winner is rated 10th best African player of the last century according to the International Federation of Football History yet did not win the African Player of the Year award and was never nominated

AHMED HASSAN (Egypt) – The four-time Afcon champion remains the world’s most-capped male player ever. His 184 outings for the Pharaohs are unlikely to be bested any time soon.

SEYDOU KEITA (Mali) – He was beaten to the award by Yaya Toure in 2011. Keita picked up three La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey, three Supercopa de Espana and two Champions League titles with Barcelona

ANTHONY YEBOAH (Ghana) – The legendary Black Stars player bowed to compatriot Abedi Pele twice and came ninth in the 1993 Fifa Ballon d'Or won by Italy’s Roberto Baggio

MOHAMMED ABOUTRIKA (Egypt) – Despite winning a record four African Inter-Club Player of the Year titles, winning the big prize was a wild goose chase for the Egyptian great as he was beaten to the crown by Togolese Adebayor in 2008, his best year.

MICHAEL ESSIEN (Ghana) – Tied with Didier Drogba and Yaya Toure as the African footballer with most consecutive nominations in the award (5), the Champions League winner is one of the most luckless players not to have picked the crown. He finished third on every occasion.

BENNI McCARTHY (South Africa) – One of the few Africans to have won the Champions League, the deadly striker was the most outstanding individual at the 1998 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations where he scooped the top scorer ‘s award. He remains Bafana Bafana’s all time top scorer

SEGUN ODEGBAMI (Nigeria) – ‘Mathematical’, Super Eagles’ second-highest scorer of all time lost at the award twice (1977 & 1980). The veteran was the second player after Laurent Pokou to win back-to-back Afcon top scorer award

ASAMOAH GYAN (Ghana) – Bowed to Samuel Eto’o at the award ceremony in 2010. The skilful forward, who is the youngest player ever to score for the Black Stars, holds the record as the highest scoring African at the Fifa World Cup with six goals. Yet he has not won the African Player of the Year title

JOSEPH-ANTOINE BELL (Cameroon) - He is recognised by IFFHS as Africa’s greatest goalkeeper of the 20th century and was twice runner-up in the African Footballer of the Year award.

DANIEL AMOKACHI (Nigeria) – Despite being one of Nigeria’s deadliest strikers, he was the first player to score in the Uefa Champions League in its present format. The Bull also came close twice to win the award in 1994 and 1996, where he was beaten to the award by compatriots Emmanuel Amuneke and Nwankwo Kanu respectively.

NOUREDDINE NAYBET (Morocco) – He is one of Africa’s finest defenders ever. Naybet played a record 115 matches for the Atlas Lions, representing the country in two World Cups and six Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

HOSSAM HASSAN (Egypt) - The sublime poacher was a key figure in three of Egypt’s Afcon triumphs in 1986, 1998 and 2006. He remains the Pharaoh’s top scorer of all time with 68 goals in 176 outings but was never considered good enough for the African Player of the Year award.

SAMUEL KUFFOUR (Ghana) – He lost the crown to Kanu Nwankwo (1999) and El Hadji Diouf (2001) following important playing spells at Bayern Munich. In 250 games for Bayern, he won 17 trophies in 12 years and was nominated for the 2001 Ballon d’Or

RIGOBERT SONG (Cameroon) – Song is the only African to have featured in eight Africa Cup of Nations tournament and boasts of the highest consecutive games played at the tourney with 35 first team games where he led the Indomitable Lions to two titles in 2000 and 2002.

LAURENT POKOU (Cote d’Ivoire) – A superb finisher per excellence, he was a striker of many firsts. The first player to score five goals in a game at the Africa Cup of Nations and the first player to win the afcon golden boot back to back. He was nominated for the award twice but didn't win.

I love your patriotism, but how would you have felt if an U17 winning Coach had gone ahead to win the CAF Coach of the Year when Coach Stephen Keshi, that won us the AFCON trophy.

AFCON to me is more honoured than the U17 World Cup.

Though as a Nigerian, I did love Coach Emmanuel Amuneke to win the Award.

Ogude - His wife has been kidnapped

Gunmen reportedly stormed the Ogudes’ residence and took away the wife of the Russia –based player – a member of Nigeria’s 2013 Africa Cup of Nations - winning squad

“I am making a special appeal to the Police to intensify the search for Mrs Maimunat Ogude, but I also call on the kidnappers to consider Fegor’s contributions to Nigeria football and release his wife immediately, hale and hearty.”

On Thursday, Ogude he was a very disturbed man from his European base.

Fanendo Adi goes for goal for Portland Timbers in the MLS

by Samm Audu
Portland Timbers striker Fenando Adi has said a move to Arsenal in the English Premier League would be a dream come true, but a more possible transfer for him this month would be to a club in Germany.

The Nigerian striker scored 18 goals to help Portland lift their first-ever MLS title last season and this has sparked off interests by clubs in Europe.

The 25-year-old Adi has already played in Denmark, Slovakia and Ukraine and has always said he wishes to return to Europe.

He has now said his agent has informed him of interests from clubs in Italy and Germany and by January 15 they hope to take a decision on his future.

“England and Arsenal will be a perfect place for me, but obviously I have not been capped by Nigeria. But my agent has told me of offers from Italy and Germany, so let’s wait and see,” he revealed.

“I want to return to Europe and Germany will be a good option.”

I can do what Emenike did for Eagles - Fenando Adi

Adi has presented his Eagles credentials

by Samm Audu
Portland Timbers striker Fenando Adi has declared he can be Super Eagles target man just as Emmanuel Emenike was until he quit international football recently.

Benue State-born Adi scored 18 goals as Portland won a first-ever MLS championship last season.

“I can be another Emenike for Nigeria as a target forward as I’m good in the air and I can hold the ball upfront for the other players,” said the big 25-year-old striker, who departed Nigeria for Europe in 2009 after he was called up to the country’s U17 team.

“I can bring a different dimension to the team.
“I have spoken to the coach and he himself has asked about me.
“This year, hopefully I will be in the Super Eagles.”

Adi also revealed on a television programme interview how “two good lies” have taken his career to where it is now.

He said he and his sister first lied to his mother they were to visit their grandmother in Lagos, when he went there to talk with an agent, who was interested in working with him.

And when he wanted to quit the U17 training camp, he also had to lie he was going to be at his sister’s wedding when in actual fact he was flying out to Europe to start his professional career.

Analysis: Why does Mikel-Hiddink work so well for Chelsea?

Goal investigate what's going right for the Nigeria midfielder since the Dutch coach replaced Jose Mourinho at Chelsea ANALYSIS

By Jide Alaka
In the 18 matches that John Obi Mikelhas played under Chelsea’s interim coach Guus Hiddink over two sessions, the Blues are yet to lose, winning 15 and drawing three.

If you want to call the Nigerian Hiddink’s lucky charm, you can go ahead, but we still need to answer the pressing question, "what it is really about Mikel’s game that suits Hiddink’s plans to a tee?"

The midfielder was lauded to the heavens after his display against Crystal Palace last Sunday as he helped the Blues record their biggest win in 12 months.

After the win over Palace, Hiddink had the following to say about the Nigerian midfielder, “He is the ideal player in my option to bring balance to the team.”

Mikel under Mourinho
Unfortunately for many a Jose Mourinho fan, the Super Eagles talisman was not deemed worthy of a starting berth in the Special One’s tactical plan – which worked very well last season but faltered spectacularly this term.

In five games under the regime of Mourinho this season, Mikel played only 177 minutes [including coming on for Cesc Fabregas in the 92nd minute against Arsenal] and starting only twice; at home against Liverpool, and he was replaced with scores tied at 1-1 and away at Everton, where he provided the assist for Chelsea’s goal, scored by Nemanja Matic. He was again taken off with the Blues chasing the game at 2-1.

In the 17 matches that Chelsea played before sacking Mourinho, the preferred midfield duo of Matic and Fabregas showed that there was an imbalance but Mourinho persisted with the two players and got sacked – appropriately if performances since his exit indicate.

Would things have been different for Mourinho if he'd turned to Mikel more regularly?

Mikel, now under Hiddink
Mikel has played in all three matches under Hiddink, a total of 225 minutes. Former Liverpool midfield enforcer, and now television analyst, Graeme Souness said after the Crystal Palace win, “I don't think I've ever seen John Obi Mikel play so well.
He bossed that area.”

Hiddink also continued his lavish praise: “He played very well but also in the previous game.
"If the team is not willing to defend well, or hasn't got the right balance, then you'll concede a lot of goals. I think John Obi can be one of the key figures in bringing back that balance.

“On this podium very talented players can explore their qualities. He reads the game very well, he knows where the strength of the opponent is and knows how to combat that.

“He has very good sense, he doesn't do it in a brutal way, he's very elegant. Someone who can defend so smoothly is very beautiful.”

Reading those words, it's little surprise that Mikel is being known as the African Zidane!
We are talking about Mikel here – a player that divides Chelsea fans one way or another. That eulogy reads like Shakespearean poetry, and the plaudits did not stop there, the Chelsea fans who travelled to the Palace game at Selhurst Park were singing his name to the rafters by the end of the contest – the first time he has had such adulation since he joined the club in 2006!

....we hail Our African Zidane, John Obi Mikel... RESPECT! #PMFootball pic.twitter.com/4wLOgnj0BX— POOJA SPORTS PR.. (@PoojaMedia) January 4, 2016
What's changed? So, what has changed about Mikel’s game that he could shine so brightly against Palace?

Mikel's masterclass vs. Palace in numbers
In sport as in life, there is one sure thing that makes an athlete perform to his/her optimum and that is confidence.

Hiddink has not changed anything about Mikel’s game – he will still pass back to the goalkeeper if he sees no way forward, he will still pass over 5m, and he will not run 5km during a match, but what he could do has been improved because his confidence is back – he feels that the new manager trusts him and be assured that Mikel will only get better this season.

“Since the new manager came in we have been working really hard and as I said before, the atmosphere has changed a bit," the player began.

John Obi Mikel's stats so far this season
“The players seem more relaxed and as we are working hard in training, it is now starting to show in the matches that we play,” Mikel told Sky Sports after the Palace victory.

Mikel's renaissance is a reminder of how quickly—and dramatically—things can change in football. The Nigerian had appeared destined for the exit door at Stamford Bridge under Mourinho, with the amount of minutes spent watching football increasingly remarkably compared to the number of minutes actually playing it.

Now, however, the only things going through the roof are his value, his confidence and his playing time. Long may it last.

Onobi holds high hope ahead CHAN

Paul Onobi is very confident that the Nigerian squad are good enough to challenge for the 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Rwanda.

The Sunshine Stars midfielder’s conviction stems from the team spirit and quality of teammates in the Super Eagles squad named for the African tournament.

He also holds the belief that the Super Eagles are brave enough to face any team at the CHAN including their group opponents, Tunisia, Guinea and Niger Republic.

“With this performance from the team against Angola I believe the spirit is high in camp and I believe we are ready for Ivory Coast and are also ready for the CHAN.

“I am very sure that we have a very good team. We do not fear any team for the CHAN. Nigerians should have faith in us and keep praying for us too,” Onobi told supersport.com.

Nigeria were held 1-1 by Angola in a friendly in Pretoria on Wednesday. Sunday Oliseh’s men will continue their preparation with another tune-up game against Ivory Coast on Monday.

Orkpekyandega:

I love your patriotism, but how would you have felt if an U17 winning Coach had gone ahead to win the CAF Coach of the Year when Coach Stephen Keshi, that won us the AFCON trophy.

AFCON to me is more honoured than the U17 World Cup.

Though as a Nigerian, I did love Coach Emmanuel Amuneke to win the Award.

lol then it would have gone to Manu Garba. If that was the case they should give out the award right after the nations cup because the other coaches don't stand a chance.

Nigerian teen star Kelechi Iheanacho scored his first English FA Cup goal for Manchester City as they handed Norwich City a convincing 3-0 bashing at Carrow Road to advance to the fourth round of the competition.

The Nigeria international who was making his second start in the competition, third in all competitions, was outstanding for Manchester City and doubled his side’s lead in the 31st minute, taking his goal tally in all competitions to five this season, after Sergio Aguero had poked home the opening goal in the 16th minute.

FA Cup: Iwobi Sparkles As Arsenal Ease Past Sunderland

By Izuchukwu Okosi:
Nigerian younster Alex Iwobi was one of the standout players on Saturday as Arsenal defeated Sunderland 3-1 in their 3rd Round FA Cup clash at the Emirates to advance in the competition.

Sunderland who have not won in ten visits to the Emirates scored first in the game when Laurent Koscielny lost the ball from a Kieran Gibbs close pass allowing Jermaine Lens to steal the ball and net from a shot.

Super Eagles forward Iwobi was a constant menace and was involved when Arsenal equalised in the 25th minute through Joel Campbell. The Costa Rican guided the ball past Jordan Pickford in Sunderland goal who was making his senior debut for the Black Cats, after Iwobi’s initial pass picked o
ut Theo Walcott, who set up Campbell.

Arsenal without Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez made it 2-1 in the 72nd minute of the second half through substitute Aaron Ramsey who replaced Iwobi.
Joel Campbell and Hector Bellerin exchanged passes and then set up the Welsh midfielder who poked home.

Sunderland soon paid for their prolifigacy earlier when Olivier Giroud made it 3-1 for the Gunners to ensure Arsenal were not forced to a replay.

Chelsea Vs Scunthorpe: Mikel Looks To Extend Winning Record Under Hiddink

By Johnny Edward:
Super Eagles midfielder, John Mikel Obi could extend his resurgent form and winning streak under interim boss Guus Hiddink when The Blues face Scunthorpe in the 3rd Round of the FA Cup on Sunday, Comple tesportsnigeria.com reports.

Mikel is yet to lose a game under the Dutch coach in 19 matches and counting, Comple tesportsnigeria.com has learnt.

The Nigeria international who has been touted as Chelsea's unlikely hero in his 10th year at the club, has been impressive in his last three games for The Blues.

According to Opta ‎Statistics, the 28 year old star has helped The Blues to 14 wins and five draws under Hiddink, fueling speculations that he could be the catalyst to turn round the fortunes of the club.
The 28-year-old tackled, blocked, cleared and intercepted well at Selhurst Park to produce an unrivalled 95.1 per cent pass completion rate.

It was the fourth highest accuracy by any player with 80 or more passes in a Premier League game this season, according to Opta Statistics.

Interestingly, Mikel who is poised for his fourth start against Scunthorpe United in the FA Cup 3rd Round has already played 225 minutes under Hiddink in the Premier League this season, compared to the 177 he had in eight substitute appearances under Jose Mourinho.

Hiddink said: "I think John Obi can be one of the key figures in bringing back balance.

"He reads the game very well, he knows where the strength of the opponent is and knows how to combat that. He has very good sense, he doesn't do it in a brutal way, he's very elegant. Someone who can defend so smoothly is very beautiful."

Shut Up! Onigbinde Blasts Yaya Toure Over CAF Award Rant

By James Agberebi :
Former Super Eagles handler, Adegboye Onigbinde has expressly admonished Yaya Toure for crying foul after losing the 2015 African Footballer of The Year Award to Gabon's Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang, Comple tesportsnigeria.comreports.‎

At the Glo-CAF Award ceremony held on Thursday in Abuja, Aubameyang usurped Toure, who was gunning for a record fifth straight award. Ghana's Andre Ayew came third.

But in his reaction to the award given to Aubameyang, Toure expressed his disappointment with the decision, questioning CAF's credibility.

Speaking with Comple tesportsnigeria.com, Onigbinde endorsed CAF's choice of Aubameyang.

"Can one be the accused and the Judge? There is a meticulous system of selecting people for this award and probably he (Toure) does not understand the details.

And I don't believe CAF have changed its system from what I know it to be," Onigbinde told Completesportsnigeria.com.‎

"This award is not done by one man. It is done by media people, technical people, making their input. Unless Yaya Toure can come out and say what he thinks that really went wrong."

Onigbinde dismissed Toure's claim that the fact Cote d'Ivoire won the last year's Cup of Nations, should have given him the edge.

"Because Cote d Ivoire won the Cup of Nations is not a criteria to award him the award. It is a cumulative assessment. It's like when Nigerians are talking about the FIFA ranking, making claims that the Super Eagles won this match and that match, the question is of what grade are these matches.

"So like I said, it is a cumulative assessment, not just because you won the Cup of Nations and you think you are the best."

Wow!!! It's been over a month. Okay... Uhmm.... Firstly.... Happy new year to everyone (will try to reply all those mentions... Only if necessary...) *smiles*

Yaya Toure's full comments on his coming "second" in the CAF POTY is comedy of the month and already my first soccer amusement of 2016.

Just check out his comments (they are alll over the internet).. Sooo when he won it in 2013 ahead of an Afcon-winning Mikel, he didn't remember that "Europe was being put before Africa".

Now he says Aubameyang's win shows indecency and disrespect on Caf's part.... That Europe is being put before Africa as regards the Caf POTY.

Ahahahahahahaha..... Toure is fast becoming a "cry-baby" and "sore loser". That's how he wanted to claim Iheanacho's goal against Swansea (yes Toure shot the ball but Nacho's back did the final business--- Nacho was rightly placed and rightly timed all due to his instinctive good positioning--- Nacho even said "thanks Toure for the assist" in the post match interview.... Ahahahahaha...)

Now the joke's on Yaya Toure. Wonderful player he remains.... And a legend no doubt but his attitude of late shows disrespect for fellow African stars.

Toure should watch it.

Chief Onigbinde of modakeke just hit the "toure's comments matter" from another angle.

I know I'm yet to say hello "specifically" but please bear with me.

And Sir Terzurum5 (just seeing a comment you made on dec.11 last year) , I surely didn't use Christmas/New year's day to conduct research. I finished my 2015 Hopkins research scholarships session by the first week of december (dec.7-cool and will resume the next phase by Mid-January. I was "having some good fun + looking into one or two things... But I did touch a little on academics... Only a little ooo"
Meanwhile, Other academic studies of mine continue also... Plus "more" **smiles**

So uhmm.... Thanks for the kind compliments too. And I see you're in Love..... Don't worry, I can arrange a meeting.... *winks*

Sir Justiz5, Uhmm...... I'm alright. Thanks for the show of concern. Glad to see you made it into 2016 too..... **smiles**

To Safarigirl, well, I'm quite honored seeing "those special mentions" (dec.11 post, and Christmas/New Year post). Thank you....... So much. I'm quite humbled.... But hey! Considering they were days and weeks ago, hope you've not "changed" your mind..... Ahahahahahahaha...... #justKidding. And hey, Iheanacho, Success and Umar Sadiq have all scored in 2016 already.... Hehehe...

Always a Joy to have you Safarigirl, always a Joy....

To Shizzy7, she hardly posts in sports.... But gotta give a special hail to her too. We'll see later. And hey! That NL DP of yours looks "ridiculous"..... Ahahahahaha...... Always a cool pleasure having you too.... Always always...

Sir AIG07, I'm so so so sorry, I couldn't make it for NL's Christmas Dinner. Please forgive me. Sorry you had to wait on me. But I hope Sir Mikron showed up.... *smiles* Happy new year Sir.

Okay.... I gotta stop here.... Happy y'all made it.

Others to acknowledge:

Sirs: Joseph1013 (still a boss), TheGoodJoe (Still rocks!), BascoVanVeli (Can't forget the name... BVV... *smiles*), Orkpekyandega, Linked, Icon4s, Tbaba1234, Blackalbino6, Dannycrusoe, Blueto, Casket (please Sir, bury ONLY negatives this year..... Ahahahahahaha.... Don't worry, I'm still that optimistic kid you commended. *BIG SMILES*) and every other person I "stupidly but innocently" forgot... **smiles** **I really gotta run**

Madams/Miss: Confun, and all other ladies in and across the sports section.

Okay, still another time....... The Nigerian Soccer project continues... The full rise of Nigeria's next Super Golden generation is taking shape little by little. USE THE GIFT OF "A DAY" WISELY THIS YEAR... Live each day like it's your last... A bientot y'all.
