A policeman, attached to the Special Anti- Robbery Squad (SARS), Ikorodu, Lagos State Police Command was found dead, with his brains blown out in his brand new Camry car yesterday. The killing of the policeman occurred at Agege area of Lagos. Witnesses claimed that the policeman, Corporal Sunday David, killed two people before a mob swooped on him. David was killed a few metres from his house at Agege.

He was married and had two children, but last week, his pregnant mistress had a baby for him. David refused to marry the lady, but did an elaborate naming ceremony for the baby last week. He was also said to have bought his Camry car four weeks ago.

Another puzzle for the police authorities is that when David’s car was searched, his service pistol was found on his waist band and one AK47 rifle, fully loaded with ammunition, was discovered inside his car boot. Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, has warned that no SARS operative should ever go off duty with rifle or pistol. Aside from David, three other bodies were seen at the scene. One of them is said to be the body of the fraudster, Obey, whom David tried to rescue.

The other two bodies were those of Sulaimon and Segun, youths residing at Agege, where the shooting took place. It was alleged that the policeman was shot just as he was trying to rescue a cybercrime fraudster from some angry youths on Amoo Street. A police source, however, said: “We were called that a SARS official was attacked on Amoo Street, Agege.

On getting there, David was already dead. He was shot through the roof of his vehicle. We noticed blood stains inside the vehicle. People gathered around it. “When SARS reached there, the crowd dispersed. But one of them told us that David and two people were inside in his car.

They got to a junction where there was traffic and a man jumped on the roof of the car and shot them. He shot them through the roof, from behind. “David’s brains were blown out. He slumped over his wheel of his car when SARS reached him.

The other two men with him in the car were rushed to the hospital, where they died. Nobody knows the identities of the two men who were inside the car with David.” The source added that the witnesses claimed that David shot someone and was escaping. “These people, however, refused to produce the body of the person they said David killed,” the source said.

The suspected fraudster, Obey said to have been driving through Amoo Street around 2p.m. when some youths who were playing football at Main Stadium in the area, sighted him and blocked his vehicle. They allegedly demanded money from him. Obey gave one of his boys his Automated Teller Machine (ATM) to withdraw N200,000 for the youth.

The guy who went to the ATM gallery returned with just N60,000.

This led to pandemonium, with the youths insisting the money would not be enough to share. When Obey sensed that the youth were becoming violent, he called his police friend, David, via phone. It was claimed that David opened fire immediately he reached the scene. Two of his bullets hit Sulaimon and Segun.

They allegedly died on the spot. A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “Immediately the policeman saw that two persons had fallen, he drove off with Obey in his vehicle. From where I was standing, I saw four men. They were on two motorcycles. They chased the policeman and Obey.

I later heard that David and Obey had been shot and killed on Orile-Agege Road. David was shot at close range on his forehead.” A resident, Mr. Kunle James, said the crisis would have been averted if the policemen had arrived on time. He said:

“I was just returning from church when I heard the gunshots. I called the emergency number, but they didn’t come, until after the crisis escalated. We lost two promising youths in the community.” The four bodies had been deposited at Ile-Epo General Hospital. Confirming the incident, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Joe Offor, said: “We are still investigating the cause of the incident. There is no arrest so far. We are still investigating the cause of the crisis. The late policeman was attached to SARS, Ikeja.”
