Femi Makinde, Osogbo The Osun State government has advertised vacancies at hospitals in the state, a move apparently aimed at getting replacement for doctors, who are currently on strike. The advertisement, which was signed by Sunday Olajide on behalf of the Head of Service, Mr. Sunday Owoeye, was aired on the Osun State Broadcasting Corporation. The broadcast led many to conclude that Governor Rauf Aegbesola had sacked the striking doctors, who went on strike since since September 28, 2015. The state government had threatened to fire the doctors if they failed to resume work on Friday. The governor said on Thursday that the civil service rule to effect that would be implemented on Monday but that did not happen. The President of the Association of Resident Doctors, LAUTECH, Dr. Adeyinka Owolabi, when contacted told our correspondent on the telephone that he also listened to the advert. He said, “We are still on strike. Nothing has changed but I heard on the television- government advertising vacancies of doctors. They are promising them the stipends that we are rejecting. “We have approached the court before this and we are waiting for the date of the hearing of the matter.” The doctors rejected half salaries which the state government is paying and embarked on the strike after their ultimatum. Meanwhile, the Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital have embarked on an indefinite strike following the expiration of a seven day ultimatum given the government. The Secretary of MDCAN, Dr. Tokunbo Olajumoke, confirmed this to our correspondent on the telephone. He said, “The strike started 8am this morning at the expiration of the ultimatum. So we are on strike http://www.punchng.com/breaking-aregbesola-sacks-striking-doctors/ . |

Mishydoo:Yeah, the new doctors who love to suffer without salaries should please go and apply. Our brothers doing house job at osogbo government hospitals were not paid by aregbesola. Other house officers from other states were now contributing money and sending to those doctors in osun state every month. Do you call that life? If you are a doctor, you will understand the pain aregbesola is taking them through. But I suspect you are not a doctor. So, your reaction is understandable. |

Mishydoo:Spare me that your idea of "eager to strike". Would they have gone on strike (no matter how eager they are) if aregbesola had paid their salaries? Your reasons is so shallow and unreasonable. You owed someone several months salary only to offer him just a fraction of one month salary and here you are giving some unreasonable excuse for your boss aregbesola. Put yourself in their shoes. Work for several months in a place without pay and your employer offers you a fraction of just one month and let us see how you will react. |

As much as I detest strike, it is obvious that Aregbesola is an irresponsible governor, who single handedly ran the state bankrupt with his Commissioner for Finance. There should be a law banning anybody working in the public service from having a private establishment. Most times, they always divert clients, customers and patients to their private practises. Some even end up using the little resources provided by government for their private practise. |

He should ask Fashola how that went in Lagos State. I used to work in a Lagos State hospital when he sacked doctors and at the end of the day all were recalled. The locum doctors he was able to recruit were not specialist or consultants. Unfortunately since then I can count 4 consultants in my department alone that left the system and all started talking about leaving during the strike. Other cadres of more senior , expirienced doctors left and are also leaving and this is a department that was already short staffed. Aregbesola should be careful because with the small expirienced his residence have they may be snapped up in other short staffed centres and if stability returns to the Northopaedic East. Also the UK has opened its doors again to Nigerian doctors after the EU doctors showed them pepper so there are other alternatives for these stupid doctors like myself. Guess who suffers in the end? |

Is any medical doctor running for a governorship position in the southwest? Currently there is only one governor who is a doctor, and after elections, doesnt look like any southwest state has a doctor in that position. offtopic. What we have currently I think is: Lagos, Accounting Ogun, Accounting Ekiti, Scientist, or Biological Science Oyo, Accounting or Business Admin Osun, Engineer Ondo, Physician (doctor), but elections are this year or next year. |

Mishydoo:For your info, civil servants in osun state went on strike before the doctors. My brother is a civil servant in osogbo, that's how I know. So what next do you have to say to defend your rascal governor, who prefers to spend money on buying Xmas banger to paying salaries? For your info, no doctor is out anywhere looking for job. All he needs to do is get the hell out of Nigeria. Real green pastures are waiting for a doctor anywhere he goes in the world, Same for a nurse. So preach that msg to yourself; am not buying. And for your information, no bodynwill take his job. They are all members of NMA. They will meet at the NMA meeting. If fooooolish aregbe thinks he can break the ranks of doctors, he is fooooling himself. Doctor to doctor relationship is like a cult relationship. You can't break their rank. And do you know why? They all remember what they had to go through while in medical school. That is why a doctor will never want to testify against another doctor in a court of law. You and your rascal governor will lose this battle. Take my word for it. |

One thing I know about doctors in Nigeria is that they have one of the strongest union in existence in that country, and their solidarity is solid. Aregbesola just dey deceive himself. Fasola tried it in Lagos, he gave out new jobs, and also ended up calling back the sacked ones. lol. |

The Odenni Ooni Gbesse rascal will never cease to amaze me. Let him sack and employ quacks into their position or better yet turn to his babalawo Almata to take over the health sector. This is what you get when you elect a confirmed certificate fraudster and babalawo as your governor. |
| Re: Aregbesola Seeks Replacement For Striking Doctors by APCzombie: 7:43am On Jan 14, 2016 |
Descartes:It is not applicable to doctors in the civil service. The law only applies to core civil servants and political appointees. The state and federal govt can not provide universal healthcare and so they encourage the setting up of private hospitals . |
