When next u are asked that kind of question, ensure u avoid stating an amount. You could say, "I believe that a reputable company like urs can pay me a fairly reasonable and motivating amount, which will not affect their budgeted profit". Leave the interviewer to struggle with the meaning.
Always make ur responses as short as possible
you spoke my mind......u dnt mention a specific amount..

I was invited to an interview which was held yesterday in their headquarter office. I thank God all went well not untill I was asked how much I think the company can pay me? But my response was 50k but am afraid if I have bleeped up for saying that or is it appropriate or not. I want my dear nairalanders in the house to please advice me on the implication of this pay level to ur success in getting ur desired job

You probably knows your worth and your value proposition. More often than not, we allow our desperation to undervalue our worth.

Never settle for less if you have more to offer

By mentioning 50k the interviewer would be able to deduce that you are a beginner without any form of experience. There are general questions that are always asked in an interview and you ought to have prepared yourself ahead. Not sure 50k can even takia of your transportation cost if you really know where the refinery is located. 250k is more like it to me. 50k is just nothing.

The last time I said such, I was told to go back home, that I wasn't ready to work.

Lets not say 50k is small o...Its better than nothing..#

I love this thou

Haba Broz, I didn't say doing nothing is better than 50k ooo, better than many teaching jobs.
I wouldn't even advise OP to drop the job if it's 50k unless he has something doing.

I only stated it's much likely 50k OP stated will below the salary for that position, so I sont think they'll drop him for quoting lower structure. I think it's safer quoting a lower salary than higher salary for a position being interviewed for.
But it's safest not to quote any salary, the company has existing salary structure, just tell them to pay within that structure.
Re: At Dangote Sugar Refinery Interview Held Yesterday by viktor01(m): 10:16am On Jan 22, 2016
This stupid question is just not fare on employees, if she had demanded for 500k, they would see her as high minded but now that she demanded 50k, are they just going to give her that, don't they have salary structure for employees in that category?

BTW, OP, next time, just tell them that you believe that there is a particular amount allotted for that position and if they insisted that you specify an amount, double the value that first comes to your mind.

Don't worry about that..that question is asked for a different reason.. If you are successful they would pay you the appropriate amount for the position..

Cheers!

the best answer for such interview question is;
I'll be satisfied with what ever I'm offered.
or I'll be satisfied with industrial standard.
or you believe Dangote is a big company and their offer will meet your expectation.

Hope it is not graduate trainee you're going there for.

It's advisable for you to prepare yourself fully for question like this before you attend an interview.

It is obvious that you're prepared to get something doing but not for you to be "taking water from the well to the ocean"......

I've been in that position where I gave such an answer and the people insisted "ehn so give a figure, tell me something" I didn't want to be seen to be rude, hence I gave a figure.

On the 2nd occasion, I was most hesitant and didn't want to be bullied until the interviewer told me "I get the feeling you don't really need this job" at that stage I had to say something. So sometimes, that reply does not work.

This your response isn't that short missy and it's quite ambiguous for a response.

If I were interviewing you and you give me this kind of answer it would be a definite minus in my books.

It depends on the position you're interviewed for. Can you throw more light on that?

I concur! But in a multinational coy , employees on same level and grade may have differences in their take home pay which could be due to your CV and what you have to offer the company but as you said there is always a baseline amount for each position.

In my opinion you look like one who is just content, patient and not greedy but they may misconstrue it and think you are desperate. In my opinion again you will be paid more than that when you are finally employed.

Having seen many NLers coming to insult you, I had to quote you again. If you performed impressively well in that interview, I believe they will not drop you becuz u stated low salary, and they will also not pay you the 50k you asked. They will pay you the real salary.

Cool your nerves, don't let anybody instill fears in your tender heart; what will be will be.

Be positive, hopeful and prayerful.

Success.

Even a cleaner without any formal education cannot ask for something that low in our company here.

Like seriously? What were you thinking? Were you that desprate? How long have you been jobless? Was there a time bomb in your kitty that if you didn't get a job the next minute would blow you to shreds?
