It seems commonplace these days to see and read many people complain these about the quality of topics that make front page on Nairaland (NL). As the entertainment industry continues to grow at home and abroad, one can understand why entertainment related articles (some of which are lightweight and intellectually empty) almost certainly make front page, but how do we explain the array of subjective and arrant explicitly X-rated posts that now litter various sections on NL? Has there been a policy change by Seun, the MoDs and other management of NL? Or is it hackers at work? What happened to the good days when only topics that are most beneficial to the public make front page rather than anything goes? There are many underaged folks who visit popular sites as NL for useful info, those kids deserve to be protected. NL should continue to lead the way in being a user friendly Nigerian website that balances the "right to free speech" and "respect for others". The assymetrical needs of the various categories of people that use NL should continue to be met. The public deserves to be forewarned before such explicit materials are unleashed on us. Better still, sexual posts could be restricted to a section reserved for them rather than being allowed to litter every inch on NL like a multiheaded monster! @OP nairaland is a forum and one thing u must undastand is that, its only news that people will be interested in that makes front page, u and i know that news like tonto dikeh takes a selfie in a bathroom is likely to gather more views than the rest news, seun and the mods know what they are doing, its all about the money. |

You're confusing only yourself by mixing up two distinct issues that have nothing to do with each other: (1) home page topics (2) X-rated posts. Issue (1) is a non-issue based on your own words: "As the entertainment industry continues to grow at home and abroad, one can understand why entertainment related articles (some of which are lightweight and intellectually empty) almost certainly make front page," So it baffles me that you are lumping that into your complaint when clearly you understand the reason why these topics must make the home page. Any further mention of the home page will be seen as a sign that your grasp of logical reasoning is poor, because you know why it's that way. Issue (2) is that, yes, some evil spammers have been posting porn on the forum. My 3 paid supermods are under strict instructions to remove those ungodly materials as soon as they are detected and they assure me that they have been doing so. Unfortunately, a lot of innocent people still see those pictures in the few minutes before they are removed. You can speed things up by using the Report button to alert the mods. Unfortunately, we can't completely prevent people from posting bad things on the forum, but we can reduce the time it takes to remove them. |

Seun:@Seun- of course, there were two different issues raised. The first is almost inevitable, which is understandable. I know topics in the home/front page drive traffic but fact is, since the topics in the front page are the first visitors to the site see, the quality of those topics say a lot to visitors (especially first time visitors). For the second observation, while the good work of the MoDs is quite commendable, the charge is that they do better. Except if we are saying an improvement is impossible or unnecessary! Lastly, was it really necessary you included this, "Any further mention of the home page will be seen as a sign that your grasp of logical reasoning is poor, because you know why it's that way."? If you wrote this or any of your aides did, then that would be a shame and big disservice to the brand. Benign insults should not be a standard in addressing sincere concerns raised on the forum, at least, not insults from you, the face of NL. What example did you intend by that insult? Or does your example explain why insults are readily spewed every where and unabated these days on NL? Seun, I could suppose you are a good guy but whoever included that poo in that reply of yours needs to check himself in for a refresher course in civic relations. |

Anytime I see these pornographic materials, I usually exit the topic immediately because the bible says in 1st Thessalonians 5:22 "Flee from every appearance of evil" and in Proverbs 4:23 "Keep thy heart with all diligence; For out of it are the issues of life". This menace has reduced the frequency at which I visit Nairaland because I come to Nairaland for informative, educative and entertaining topics which I believe was your aim of creating this forum. Such content on a public forum will affect its image negatively. Hence, advertisers may not want to associate with an organization that promotes inappropriate content. Seun, I think you should have a moderator specially dedicated to monitoring and taking care of such spams. I know it will cost you more but it will be of benefit to the young people that come here to view educative posts. Social networks like Facebook have a dedicated team for spams. https://www.facebook.com/notes/facebook-engineering/my-first-year-fighting-spam/10150513440403920/ https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-internal-culture-of-Facebooks-Site-Integrity-team-like https://www.facebook.com/help/287137088110949/ Another way you can reduce this disgusting practice is by calling the attention of all Nairalanders to the use of the "Report" button to create awareness of its features. You can have a separate post to raise this issue so that we can all join hands to stop this menace. Nairaland has been a huge resource for me and I do not want it to go down the drain. |

nigerianngo:This is a selfish interpretation of the bible. Faith without works is dead. Clicking the Report button to protect your neighbours is more biblical. Seun, I think you should have a moderator specially dedicated to monitoring and taking care of such spams. I know it will cost you more but it will be of benefit to the young people that come here to view educative posts. Social networks like Facebook have a dedicated team for spams.Dominique's entire job is to fight spammers and scammers on Nairaland. If you feel dominique is doing her job poorly I can give it to someone else. Lalasticlala and Mynd44 also spend a lot of their time dealing with those posts. I thought it was under control. I guess I was wrong. |

Thanks for the reply Seun. I wasn't aware of the benefits of the report button, that's why I never used it. I think this topic will help in creating more awareness so that people will use the button consistently. I'm happy there is a dedicated employee for fighting spams and I do not think she is doing her job poorly. I believe attacking this menace is a collective effort between Dominique and Nairalanders. It will be great if you or a moderator can create a topic on the front page so that people will be aware of the use of this button. A lot of Nairalanders have been complaining about the inappropriate content and I think this is a step in the right direction. |

Seun:@Seun, the MoDs are doing great. And yes, they can do better. You could also educate Nairalanders on the benefits of the report button. That way, everybody is better protected. Thank you. |

The FP issue is being overflogged. Initially it was a bit hard to take but iv come to terms with it. It's actually more balanced now and more interesting. We can't all be cool with everything, so click on the topics u r interested in and let the rest be. It's privately owned afterall and how it is run is entirely up to the owner. |
