You see, most people don't realize how medicine and surgery is until they experience it themselves....

My colleague mowah has told u just the academics that go with it, he didn't tell you anything about the responsibilities that flow with it....

Do you want to talk about the lectures (from 8am-6pm everyday, no break, sometimes some profs can hold lectures at 10pm, and you won't say crap) the practicals (during preclinical) and the ward rounds/clinics (during clinical)....

What of the crazy exams, answering 800 objective questions in 3hrs, then coming back that same day to answer all 17essay questions..... Even before that, you write exams nearly every month.....

During ward rounds, you are abused, castigated, told that you can never make it in life, you can never be a doctor, in front of your patient....

Medicine, to me, is the toughest course ever, then we could mention others later

Your last sentence is the best answer. ''Medicine, to me''. Yes, to you! Don't ever conclude that a course is the toughest until you have experienced other courses. That's a self-centred way of answering questions. You already initially stated that no one can understand Medicine unless he is in it. Same with other courses! How on earth will you say Medicine is tougher than dentistry? Why would you laugh at someone who says so. Medicine in overhyped in Nigeria due to the employment crises everywhere. Everyone wants to become a doctor. In countries like Japan and China, where technology is the backbone, only a few people want to become doctors. Many people choose Engineering and Software. If you think you can go there and start forming as a doctor, you are on a long thing. Doctors are not even the most paid and doctors are usually overworked and sued everyday whenever they misbehave towards patients, unlike here in Nigeria where doctors go dey form kingpin. So, many people are scared of studying Medicine, therefore the few that study it are ones who are very passionate about the course, unlike in Naija where na because of employment and money people dey go.

Let me educate you a bit; in 2015, Guinness listed Medicine as the toughest course while in 2016, Engineering was listed as the toughest by Forbes. I know medical students who hated Math in high school. So, your strength is another man's weakness and vice versa. Medicine is tough for you, but for Victor Olalusi(Google his name), it's easy. So no course is the toughest!

I'm sure it's because its a pharmD that is awarded and not a B.Pharm, abi??

Just asking tho

The same applies to nursing in the university. You fail a course you repeat the entire year. That is what is practiced in my school. Besides, i have received lectures and written exams with medicine students. The course is just stressful, not difficult. Pharmacy, Nursing, Medical lab science and medical science in general are all stressful courses.

well they is no big deal as long as you get the admission and maintain an open mind frame that anything can happen, being it PASS RESIT REPEAT AND WITHDRAW.. you will stay long and be tired of school no doubt, but with the right mindset of GOOD NETWORK OF FELLOW MATES.. THE SERIOUS ONE U WILL SCALE.. mind you SOLITARY "GURUISM" IS DANGEROUS, u go fail like mumu.. prayer and Open mindedness.. Bonne chance wink grin kiss

Truss me, na die... my roomate then slept an average of 2-3hours daily..
always studying and sipping coke mixed with nescafe..
you have postings on christmas day, new year day,

you read, read, read.. and revise

then repeat.

everyday..

but at the end, the stress pays off

Personally, i dont think medicine is worth the stress.

i cant spend 7-8 years in school, graduate and still be paid peanuts.

i know, cos my immediate younger sis is a medical doc.

The money used to train her can train 2 more ppl in other courses. Her textbook were a must buy ( no go n use the library.) she works in a state hospital and meeen, she doesnt earn as much as myself or the immediate younger sis. Apart from passion, i dont see why any of my kids should waste that kind of time n money studying the course.

I am talking from naija experience. It could be different in other countries.

Nb- Do you know some private hospitals pay as low as 40k?

undecided The hardest course is Engineering ... quote me anywhere

at least you have breaks after every semester, you dont have postings overnight, class/ward rounds the next morning till 6, ward rounds where youre basically standing for at least 4-5hours, then go for tutorials, come back flip open your book and revise still that day....

then repeat this routine everyday throughout the year,
Even sundays and saturdays, you have postings..

I have this sister that was so brilliant like mad!

The symbols in Chemistry and scientists Rules in Physics and Maths where in her finger-tips!

She got admitted to read Medicine in UNIBEN!

She was doing wonderfully well theoretically, I was told when the practical aspect was introduced to her for further studies from stage to stage, Dead Bodies where freely given to her for practical!

A time came in her studies and exposures to these Dead bodies my dear sis developed a serious ailment that she almost died from!

She has to go to other courses still in the medical field but sure not as the one she was doing b4, even at that, she has never been herself ever again!

Shocks and wonders has taken lots from her especially when she remembers somethings back then!

God bless our Doctors and Oh Lord I pray, If there's life after this life, bless me with brain, opportunity and parents that will assist me to become a Doctor!

Mehn medicine no be here oo. The pressure on a medical student can't be qualified. No other student feels such. From the first day u get admitted to study medicine, the whole street will change ur name to Doc. The fear of failing out, the stress too much abeg. Its not somtin I'll like to a second time. Close to exams u can reach up to 16hrs, where u practically live in the class and this is no guarantee that u'll pass the exam.
Some of the bad belle professors dont belive u can pass the exam @ a sitting esp people in Peadiatrics and Surgery depts.
All in all, Medicine (in Nigeria) is not worth the stress.

Its a tough course to do. But its easier in some Universities, and you can still be a good doctor.
Ibadan is one of the toughest, and some of the lecturers in Ibadan are actually wicked. They will push you to do limit and sometimes you will feel like giving it up. Ife is also tough, probably as wicked as Ibadan. Lagos seem sensible.
i am not trying to put you off, but be prepared. I went to Ibadan years ago, and you too can do it if you mean it.
A lot of medical students in Ibadan actually break down from the stress, its a tough place to do Medicine.

Senseless posts. If you ask a medical student to study engineering, he will whine and whine on how he doesn't have passion for it, same for an engineering student. There is nothing too hard when you have the passion.

The only thing that is hard about some courses is when you are faced with a SADIST.

Can you even compare? Forget about the stressful academic side of studying MBBS. Studying MBBS is just like undergoing military training. How many people can stand for 4-5 hours during ward rounds? Not To talk of the numerous bed sides which could be at odd hours. Then you still have to come back, read well and sleep against tomorrow's lecture which begins by 8am.

The worst of it is the insults you get during rounds from senior doctors. If you are soft hearted, you might just commit suicide if you take what they tell you to heart.

Means while, a guy just fainted this afternoon during rounds. It's one of those things grin
ohboy. i better start praying 4 my sis o.

To say medicine and surgery is the most difficult course is an understatement.

For starters, in 18months you will have to do biochemistry, anatomy and physiology with an additional course. The whole of it, when you think it's the same courses each one of it some takes 4-5 years to study

In 4 months you will have to finish the whole pharmacology text
What it takes pharmacy and pharmacology students 5 years

Another 4 months to finish the whole pathology text
Pathology is divided into morbid anatomy, chemical pathology, hematology and microbiology
Microbiology is divided into bacteriology, fungalogy, parasitology and virology
All these are specialties, people take years to students
The clinicals is mad, medicine, surgery, o&g, peadiatrics.....

It's only in medicine 24hrs ain't enuf
Medicine makes extraordinary students ordinary
Turns humans into beast
I had to revise 175detailed slides in 20mins and know everything in there
It frustrates you
The stress, calls, wardrounds, practicals, annoying lecturers, exam tension, thrills

You have to have high tolerance, discipline and endurance level to survive

The exams are not here, time always insufficient

Negative marking, am not sure other departments does that

Lectures 8am to 5pm, evening you dey clinic
You don't have your saturdays to you everytime

I don't know about your medical school, but mine is really crazy in here
So don't even try comparing medicine with any other course

Mind you the best of the best are in medicine, many headboys in ma set, state champions, national champions, yet some still get withdrawn, majority keep on struggling.
Medicine is depressing, sometimes not mentally owkay, schizophrenic...

I don't expect you to understand, only one that passes thru the process will

If you so mad try to get admission to study medicine first, and not transfer aggression of not being able to secure an admission thus ridiculing how difficult medical school is

Medicine so far from my stay in med school is not about hardwork but smartwork....
Imagine writing everything you know about cardiovascular physiology in 2hrs!
We were blasting A's in 100level but from 200level you pray to be among the Credit and above students
When only 17students got Credit., 3b... The rest were singing from DEF
Medicine is tasking, demanding and of course tough..

I'm a pharmacist. . . I'm not going to lay claims to it being d toughest course ever but pass mark is also a 50%, 60% for some courses even (although few). And yes. . . We run lectures all day too, weekends even. . . when things get crazy. A little above half of d class makes it to final year and discipline is required if u want to make it out with a certificate /licence. Classes are repeated, carry overs are not accepted and resit exams are tough as hell. . . Nb: if u repeat a class twice, you are withdrawn from the faculty. . . So my summary is, every student has their own cross to bear!

Its 6 years on paper. earliest possible time (real life) is 7 years plus one year housemanship making it 8 years. Some are even more than that.

In OAU, pharmacist do repeat years. After repeating a 2nd time, you would be advised to withdraw irrespective of what year you are in. Some of their passmark are also 60%.

In ife, its a Bpharm but same equivalency as a Pharm D in the US.

I believe all university level courses are hard especially the sciences.

Oga, every medical school graduates students in six years through Jamb. I repeat, EVERY! Through direct entry, it is five years! Stop saying what you don't know! And don't ever add housemanship to it, because they will be paid during this time. 180-200K no be beans.
