02/03/2016 VAN GAAL REFLECTS ON VICTORY OVER WATFORD Louis van Gaal was delighted to lead Manchester United to a fourth win in just nine days with a 1-0 victory over Watford on Wednesday. Here are the main points from the manager's post-match press conference and interview with MUTV ... On the result “I am very happy for the players because they have fought until the end, and they knew out on the pitch that our competitors were losing. We wanted to win, you have to win against Watford at home, I think, but it was a difficult game because of the wind. It became a physical game and, when you see the size of our opponents compared to us, it’s very difficult for us. We fought until the end and scored a goal, so I am very happy for them." Watford's display “Watford played very well, they pressed very high up and we had difficulty with that. We gave a lot of chances away but, of course, it was because of their pressing, I cannot deny that. We still had our chances and I’m very pleased with this victory – it’s come at the right moment." Potentially substituting Juan Mata “It is true, because he was limping at the time. We were in a better moment, so I didn’t want to change him anymore. I had changed the shape with [Anthony] Martial in the striker’s position and [Marcus] Rashford on the right wing. At that time, we were in a better shape, so I didn’t want to change it. Then Juan scored the goal, so I’m very happy I let him stay on." Recent form “We have to win also against West Brom, because we have to continue this, and then you’re close again [to the contenders]. Against Arsenal, we played very well, and today was more of a fighting game. Watford were making it very difficult for us, so the victory tastes very good, especially when our competitors have lost.” Team spirit “We are fighting. In the fight, we can play fantastic matches against Arsenal, and I believe against Midtjylland we also played very well. The win against Shrewsbury Town was the start of the run of victories; I think the youngsters have given us a lot of spirit, and now when you see the dressing room full of joy with all the players laughing, it’s beautiful to see. I think that shall also accelerate the recovery of the players.” www.manutd.com/en/News-And-Features/Football-News/2016/Mar/manager-reaction-louis-van-gaal-on-watford-clash.aspx |

elampiro:We very rarely dominate sides, despite having superior individual talent to almost all the other squads in the league. That's a huge indictment of LvG. We only seem to win games due to the odd flash of individual brilliance. That's an insane way to run a league campaign. Van Gaal's philosophy seems to be to drag the quality of football down to the point where results are decided by the odd moment of skill. He gambles on the United team having more of that skill than the opposition. But it's such a mercurial quality that we end up losing far too many matches over the course of a season since no side we play is incapable of its own moment of brilliance. He's simply not a manager who can get the squad playing better than the sum of its parts. That's the metric by which all managers should ultimately be judged. It's like buying a thoroughbred horse but insisting that all races are run on quicksand. The entire spectacle is cheapened, whilst the ability of the field is blunted to the point where the winner is decided almost at random. Van Gaal has had us running on quicksand all season. The next couple of games will be telling. LvG will have had enough time with the kids to strap them to the chair and force feed them his philosophy. We'll be coming out with 80% possession, zero goals, a smiling Van Gaal and a distant memory of attacking football. |

GBR1:Your writing style is akin to Starboard's. Our problems are down to: 1. Weak defence. Blind is not a centre defender. He is being forced on us. Watford should be 3-0 up at half time save for solid DDG and poor Ighalo. 2. Slow midfieders. Schweinsteiger cannot be paired with Carrick or Fellaini. It's suicidal. I honestly prefer the dou of Schneirderlin and Herrera. We can get another one like them in the summer. Like Kante. 3. Injuries is also a problem. If I could bring two players into this team now for our next game, it has to be Smalling and Young. Young goes to do his thing on the left of our attack. Martial in the middle and Rashford on the right with Lingard and Mephis as subs. Our game will immediately improve. But Young is out on a long term injury. I got tired of Gaal few weeks ago, but I think the case would be different if we had Luke Shaw fit all season, and the other key defenders. Although when everyone is fit he manages to kill it by starting Blind in centre defence and making wrong substitutions. We are pushing for a top four finish, he has to be sincere with his selection going forward. |

SIRcumalot:forget what they're saying here. Depay did good, he wasn't excellent, but was good! One thing i noticed about him, is his will to win. Apart from Mata, smalling and maybe Rooney, you'll never see that kinda quality from others. I'd rather have Depay on the pitch than Lingard or Adnan.. Only a matter of time before he gets better. |

I don't get this Jones hate sha.. Smalling and Jones has to be the best CB partnership for us this season. |
| Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by elampiro(m): 9:33am On Mar 03, 2016 |
SetrakusRa:Truly, DePay did some good things. He was direct sometimes which confused Watford defence. Although some other time he looked confused, and one time he carelessly lost possession when we desperately needed to keep it. He will be good eventually. |

elampiro:The Jones hatred on this thread was magnified by Coogar the master salesman who was quite gifted at converting people into his own way of thinking. Exhibit A and B are the sudden upwelling of support for us to buy Otamendi and lacazette here. Having said that Jones has not improved as I expected though |
