Possibly the most intellectual, factual and earth shaking thread I've ever seen on Nairaland, and I'm an old member! This should win thread of the year! it's a pity though that the posts accompanying the topic aren't as intellectual or contributing to the discourse in any way. OP I stand with youn100%! The days of theses criminal pastors and their criminal doctrines are near.
If they're so concerned with fulfilling all the old testament laws and arguing that Jesus came to fulfil and not abolish them, then we should go and build and ark and have people carry around. We should stone women who commit adultery like the law says in Deuteronomy. I'm so happy that the eyes of my people are opening gradually.

What can you say about Matthew 23 vs 23?

Matthew 23:23 is clear:

1. It says the pharisees could tithe. Under the law of Moses and the Levitical Priesthood which was still in effect, they were supposed to tithe. But the levitical priesthood ended when Jesus died on the cross. That is why there was no record of tithing with the church in the acts of the apostles or the epistles

2. It says tithing was a lesser matter even in the law and was not as important as justice, mercy, and faith. Today, tithing has been elevated to one of the most important things in Christianity

I do not believe in tithe. I am a christian, not a hebrew. I rather give the money to orphanage homes and the poor!

That is tithe: deut 14: 22- 29 allows us to tithe to strangers, fatherless and widows if that is our preference.

The message of tithing is to give, and shun selfishness.

Op stop trying to decieve people. Below is a verse in the new testament highlighted where Jesus acknowledges the importance of tithing.

If you don't want to tithe no one is forcing you but leave others that want to do so after all its their money and not yours.

Matthew 23:23
Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.

Where in this verse does it say you should tithe? are you a pharisee? Please tell me

If I give tithe to my church out of my earnings it is not an offense to God.
Those who don't pay tithes are the ones who complain the most, because tithers don't complain.
Why complain when nobody puts a knife to your throat to?
If you are not convinced to pay then hold your peace, nobody has the right to force on you.
Wailers, hold your peace.

I wonder o! It is my choice,my decision. If I decide to donate my salary,it is nobody's business.

No! Emphatic NO!

In fact, this is one big error being taught today. We are all priests and kings unto God. Every born again believer! Rev 5:20

Pastors are simply administrative leaders in local assemblies

LOL.
Read that passage again!
It isn't endorsing tithing.
It's actually condemning a group for tithing and then failing to do important things!

LEGALAide, you probably think you are very well informed and knowledgeable right now, but God might punish you for this; trying to convince people from performing their divine obligation. This makes you an accessory to their sin should they heed your advice. Because something was not mentioned in the New testament does not makes it absurd or abolished. In case you have forgotten, Jesus Christ emphatically said he did not come to abolish the law but to fulfil it. New or old testament, it's the same God. In fact, you might not have noticed, God in return, bless people more when they pay their tithes sincerely - it's a divine assurance! (10% or 100%, everything belongs to God)
FATHER, please, forgive him, for he knows not what he says.

It's not my fault that you cannot comprehend what Jesus said in the last sentence even after highlighting it for you.... and it is not my job to convince you otherwise. If you choose not to pay tithe how does that affect me

If I choose to pay how does it affect you?

Guy you are educated!
Most Christians believe in the hebrew tradition to their own detriment forgetting that Jesus was killed for opposing the Hebrew tradition.
Old testament is for the Hebrews ( judaism)
New testament is for Christians

That bible quotation is why I have refrained from unecessary arguments that won't further the gospel.. Christ in that passage made it clear that inasmuch as there are more important things a Christian should do,the other 'less' important ones shouldn't be neglected either..that passage made it crystal clear..from the mouth of the divine high priest himself..that passage puts this thread to rest..

Tithing as it were is not a new convant practice, any pastor who collects tithe is a con artist. Pastors are supposed to be priests not by levitical priesthood which collects tithe , but by christ priesthood who doesn't need tithe.
It isn't recorded in the Bible that anyone paid tithe to christ or his disciples, so why should our present pastors ask people to pay tithe?
Jesus mentioned tithing 3 places in the new testament cf. Mat 23 vs 23' Luke 11vs 42 and Luke 18 vs 12. He condemned the tithe. To think that christ supports tithing is to think he supportes sabbath as it were.
Christ supports a sincere offering cf Mark 12 vs 41 (widows might) not giving 10% because of a set law.
The Bible called the practice of tithe old and weak law which is not perfect and has been set aside cf Hebrew 7 vs 7..18, 25. Beloved be wise and love God.
Please don't take my word for it, pray and ask for the Holy Spirit who is the source of all supernatural enlightenment, and meditate on the above scriptural verses for God's illumination on the matter . Enjoy your Sunday.

Technically,it says all laws need to be followed. Lesser or no lesser. It is called hypocrisy to practice one without the other.

Tithing is a christianized Yahoo Yahoo business. Simple.

A pastor who owns lands, schools and fleet of cars will ask someone earning below the minimum wage to bring 10% of his salary so that God will bless him and the Educated idiot will do it.

If eventually he gets salary increase he will say it is because he tithed, how about none tithers and unbelievers that are most times the boss?

Jesus is now the high priest and where there's a change in priesthood, there's equally a change in the law. The law of tithing passed away when the law of feeding the hungry, the poor, helping the needy, widows etc was established.

I don't serve a broke god that needs to invest 10% of my money in what I don't even know and then give me whatever he gains.

I serve a living God who meets all my needs according his riches in glory by Christ.
No mind dem and at the end of the day u will see the stupid pastors sleeping with peoples wives..... Make den deg deceive dem selves with tithes, den go dey drive expensive cars and u go dey on foot still having hope till u die,

Again, I will repeat:

1. It says the pharisees could tithe. Under the law of Moses and the Levitical Priesthood which was still in effect, they were supposed to tithe. But the levitical priesthood ended when Jesus died on the cross. That is why there was no record of tithing with the church in the acts of the apostles or the epistles

The verse does not say you or every Christian should tithe. It wasnt an instruction or command to go and tithe. He was reprimanding the pharisees for paying tithes while they ignored more important things. As at the time Jesus said it, tithing was still in effect in Isreal. The Jews were expected to tithe under the levitical preisthood. I think that should be clear enough
