Those can wait!

The army seriously needs new equipment. It isn't a time for expansion.
I disagree, the army in my opinion is still relatively well off.

Some of the equipment might be old, but are of such good designed that they are still being sold today exp: casspir, mamba, samil.

Rooikat, G6 and Olifant mk1b/mk2 all entered service in the 90s and are relatively new.

SAAF on the other hand are still flying Daks that have been in service for more than 70 years and although modernised the hercs still date back to the 60s.

And we still lack stratigic lift capability.

One of the last times we will see the Protea deployee operationally

Navy has her replacemeny budgeted for this year.

Has anyone seen the specific naval budget breakdown? The wording of all the articles i have seen is very confusing re: Op Biro and its funding
Well she'll probably be around another couple or so years, the Vessel replacing her will only be ready for service around 2018.

Also I would recommend you try the Government site to get the official Budget speech in document form, should be a little more comprehensive than some article.

With regards to your confusion over the type of guns, I am still digging for info.

agaugust:
Ghana has 24 units of Chinese WZ-523/type-05 IFV with 25mm cannon plus their 50 units of Typhoon MRAP. Wonder why the WZ 25mm gun looks like a Bushmaster instead of Type 87 looks. Can the Ghanaian guys explain their confusing IFV gun? Also, are these women combatants? Why are they in black not army green?
ballballo:

The women combatants are in the Recce (Reconnaissance) unit, aside from having the option to wear the army carmouflage, the black uniform is largely used for ceremonial purposes.
The army green(OG/Olive Green) was decommissioned somewhere back in 2004.

I thought the black uniform was inherited from the colonial era, considering that Ghana and Nigeria were part of the West African Frontier Fort. The picture below shows a Nigerian Vickers Mk.III Eagle tank operator in black uniform handing over an ordinance to a colleague.

SA Soldier killed and another wounded in Sudan

“The convoy came under fire 25 km from the exchange point and the security detail took up defensive positions and was able to hold ground. A South African was unfortunately fatally wounded during the exchange of fire with heavily armed rebels. Another soldier was wounded in the firefight and he was evacuated to El Fashir for treatment and is now in a stable condition,” he said.

Unconfirmed reports have it the convoy was attacked by five “technicals” (utility vehicles with pintle-mounted machine guns on the load area). A quick response force was dispatched from the UNAMID base ay Kutum and support requested from the Rwanda battalion at Kabkabiya. This was not forthcoming due to nightfall, but the South African contingent is apparently safe.

Some interesting info about our deployment:

- Contributed observers and Staff Officers from 2004 onwards
- Contributed around 850 men from 2008
- Current deployment costs R369,079,895 per year ($23 million) of tax payers money. This puts the total cost of the deployment (since 2008) in the region of $150-200 million. This is deployment cost (in theater) and excludes the added costs of training, insurance premiums and wear & tear on equipment.

With this in mind, its hardly surprising we pulled out. Something I have personally advocated for quite some time.

Goodbye and good fvcking riddance!

SAS Spioenkop and EX IBSAMAR 5

Exercise Ibsamar V, between South Africa, India and Brazil, began on 18 February with a harbour phase, which comprised training by Special Forces teams, inter-ships visits, communication equipment installation and security briefs

Next up was the sea phase, which took place between 23 and 26 February. This saw the destroyer INS Mumbai (D62), the stealth frigate INS Trishul (F43), SAS Spioenkop (F147) and the Brazilian Navy patrol vessel BNS Amazonas (P120) participate. The focus was on anti-submarine warfare, surface firing, air defence, visit board search and seizure, flying operations, search and rescue, and tactical procedures, the SAN said. The Indian Navy Shishumar class submarine INS Shalki, Sea Harriers and MiG-29K fighter aircraft, as well as the Lynx helicopter, participated in the trilateral exercise.

Throughout the three-day sea phase, gunners fired at air and sea targets, including towed surface targets. Before sunrise on day two of the sea phase, trainee officers and tactical communications operators practiced Morse code with flashing lights.

Regarding aerial activities, the INS Mumbai’s Alouette III helicopter and SAS Spioenkop’s Lynx conducted cross-deck exercises, vertical replenishments and deck landings.

As Ibsamar had a big anti-submarine warfare component, exercises involved two or more anti-surface warfare units detecting, classifying, tracking and attacking a submarine which in turn measured the ability of the submarine to counter-attack and evade after detection.

Very happy to see that the exercise comprised the full spectrum of naval operations - from special forces doing special things, to gunnery and to ASW - esp since we got to have a go at hunting Indian subs

Still better than sitting at home and doing nothing. Although i'm of the opinion that peacekeeping missions should instead by handled by Police forces, it's decent activity for the Troops and more greenbacks in their pockets.

There is plenty to do for them at home - Op Corona for example. It also means we can have a bigger "training loop" and have men conduct more diverse training instead of focusing on peace support.

Finally, I dont think UNAMID re-emburses.

Arm-Chair General segment:

My whole argument has always been that if we are going to have 2 battalions abroad, they should both be in the DRC - one in the N. Kivu Region and another in Orientale Province. DRC is in SADAC and should be our first priority.

While furthermore MONUSCO pays for the costs of deployment.

As a final point, the Defence Reveiw calls for the establishment of a FOB in the region, and having two BN's deployed will give us an excuse to build rudimentary infrastructure and get the UN to pay for it.

All UN missions Re-emburses. The UN paid for NAF MI-17s and Super Pumas when they were deployed in Darfur.

Its a hybrid mission, and they mentioned a cost to us. I have never heard any mention of UN payments for services rendered on S. Sudan... only DRC

Yep, UNAMID in Darfur, Sudan proper. Some facts:
1) UNAMID is a joint UN/AU mission. Accordingly, we get re-imbursed by the UN for most of our costs; we finance it up-front and the UN re-imburses at the end of the year, on condition contributing countries meet their 95% availability of all equipment and troops.
2) Major problem is that the AU allowed Bashir to have a say in the force composition. For example, only a certain number of helis allowed; which means no Oryx.
3) The Sudanese sometimes block supplies when the whim takes them.

About this ambush:
1) Yet again, the UN convoys traverse well-known pre-determined routes, making them extremely vulnerable to ambush;
2) The Rwandese contingent, 25km away, did not or could not come to the rescue, as they are not equipped to fight at night.

RIP to the warrior and yes, with all these constraints and ridiculous rules of engagement, it's absolutely correct that we're pulling out. Pity about the Darfuri civilians.

Considering the terrain and the duties involved it would be perfect for the Rooikat... considering that Convoy Protection was a subsidiary role in its design. Pity about the limitations imposed by Bashir

It makes sense, that there is a unilateral ban on gore images so as we don't abuse it. Photos of dead Nigerian(African) soldiers would soon then be shared by some hater, when this happens there would be no moral justification to ask them to quit or call in the Mods to ban them.

The moral difference is very clear to me.

Boko haram are the bad guys

Amisom, Nigerian troops, mnjtf, kenyan troops are the good guys

The rest is media B.S

Anyway... No wahala. Itz your thread so we will respect your rule.
