It's been a busy few days for me. Going from school to work, vice versa. I see everyone waiting for GA or admission decisions. Hopefully your persistence will make you prevail. Lot of pages to catch up to.

Gunther6, here is the response I got from Janice:

Good morning Gboyega,
We have already allocated all the assistantship positions that we have for the fall 2016 incoming class.  It is likely he would not have qualified as we have an exceptionally strong class this  year with average GPA of funded students 3.9, and quantitative GRE score of 161.  Additionally all funded students have all As in core courses and the majority have As also in upper level math courses (calculus 2, 3 and 4 for example).  I’m sorry I cannot offer more positive news for your friend. Please contact me with any additional questions and I’ll try to help. Thank you.
Dr. Hauge

I will suggest you be hopeful on your other school choices.

This is the exact kind of hardcore/high profile application pool I was explaining last week. Applicants showing up with all round As in core courses, swallowing average applications...... Damn!

I'm thinking it's more effective getting in touch with the people that form part of the AdCom.

As in economics is crazy and unfairly competitive because thw core courses you need are mainly: Principles of Microeconomics, Principles of Macroeconomics, Intermediate Macroeconomics and Intermediate Microeconomics. The 1st two are taken while taking the usual undergraduate cores where students take courses from various faculties towards credits during their 1st 60 credits. So you only take the other two if you intend going to graduate school to study economics or you want to learn more about economics and also minor maths at least and take Calculus 1-3, and a few other Maths courses. This is one disadvantage for us because we do not take enough Math courses and this isn't placing us in a good position compared to kids who do their 1st degree in the U.S.

You might not know the admission committee because they usually rotate it yearly. He can also call the student accounting office to inquire what the fees are and then compare with his funding.

Not true. Read and you get your scores unlike ours where our lecturers pending grades students can get. During my undergraduate days, most of my A's were in the 70s and a very few 80s and it is same for most people because our lecturers feel we don't deserve more than that.

Okay. Then we can say there's grade deflation in Naija schools. Cos your "average" 2.1 joe in naija is blasting A's in the US.

We need not term it. The systems differ and that is the key thing.

Yeah. I just wish the adcoms would recognise that. But they seem more interested in the raw gpas without recognising the marked difference in grading / teaching systems. I don't blame them sha. They work with what they have.

Hello house,
I was recently advised by some guru's here that i can't get an F1 visa with a community college I-20. That i can get an admission with a good university, then when i get my visa, transfer my sevis record to the community college, my question now is, is there any chance that the university can decide to refuse to send my sevis record to the community college? Does that happen? And also is it immediately after getting the visa that you ask the uni to transfer your sevis record or one has to wait till he is fully in the us and has resumed before he makes such move. Thanks for your time.

You really cannot do direct comparison here. Many Nigerian students are shortchanged. Many lecturers need to be tutored on how to lead class, how to set and grade exams. There are things you shouldn't examine students on yet our naija lecturer go on to root them out for examination. Sometimes, students are tested on untaught areas. At the end, they are so strict with marking! In US, if you failed, you are either dull or indolent but you can fail woefully in Nigeria while working very hard.

On the flip side, naija students hardly grab concept of their subjects. They don't know the objective, aim and applicability of taught subjects. grin. they just read/cram to pass. For instant, don't be surprised if some final engineering students in mechanical do not know what is torque! But students are taught to learn and apply here in US. You leave university with a measurable knowledge. You can do!

Many of our Nigerians only get to know subject matter in the industries.

congrats. You were lucky! This is not a powerful interview. It could have swing the other way. Your answers where in phrases and short. Not a good way to answer interview questions. But she saw you are genuine. She got this from your work experience and closely aligned undergraduate course. It was a bright idea for you to have chip in "cheap school fees" because that is one consideration they acknowledge in choosing schools.

I do not condemn you but letting others not to copy your style without recognizing your unique situation. Congrats again!
