So Ojukwu was senior to Gowon afterall, hmmm.

I also thought northerners claimed the Igbos dominated the military in the first republic, hmmm.

A good mathematician in the house should please help me count igbo names in that pic undecided

May God save u from tribalism which u have just engage urslf in !!!

this was when the military was with dignity and honor. before the shenanigans of ahmadu Bello polarised the military with ethnic idiosyncrasies, bias and bigotry.

did anyone notice that when it was based on merit the northern oligarchs did have their stooges in the military unlike now when the arewa flag is hoisted over the military to serve selfish purposes.

am not an ethnic bigot am just stating history has it is and the decline of merit in our military system!
Re: Picture Of The First Generation Of Nigerian Army Officers by Rollingdice(m): 3:00pm On Mar 26, 2016
Those two guys were toddlers as at the time of that pic. But why the tribal bashing?

it wasn't only the Igbos that were involved in that coup, the group spread across all regions and mind you that those young soldiers felt they were doing great deed to their fatherland.

All they wanted was to write their names in the history book by ending corruption in their beloved country with the only language understood then-COUP.

Same feat buhari and idi agbon intended to achieve with WAI. Don't let tribalism becloud your judgement undecided
.

Which stupid corruption? If it was not a tribal coup, why wasn't any Igbo soldiers or civilians killed? Story for the gods!

Most of those fine ibo officers there were buried alive in the counter coup of 1966,the first coup was spearheaded by Nzeogwu a midwesterner(present day Delta)and it was tagged an ibo Coup, today when i see Nzeogwu's kit and kin denying the ibos accross the Niger,i shake my head.

Thumbs up to Generals Ojukwu,Effiong,Madiebo et al who stood up and where counted when the chips where down.
my dear am from imo state but col joe achuzie from delta state is my best fighter of the war.
I respect his flexibility to withdraw and counter saving us men and materials.
Also Conrad nwanwo did well too infact the deltans such as achuzie made sacrifices for the igbo hinterland by not allowing 2nd division under murtala to cross into the hinterland which frustrated the rabid dog to almost wipe out asaba.
So dont try to discredit all because of a few.
Remember General phillip effiong too made sacrifices, when ojukwu fled, most of the people who prepared the surrender documents were niger deltans such as achuzie, effiong,Conrad.then igbos like sir Louis mbanefo and others so that i won't say what i dont know.but give the deltans credit.they shared in the pain.

This picture is right out of the top drawer of our documentation history as a country. These men in one way or another shaped our country the way we have it now.

Nzeogwu along with Obasunjo joined the army in 1960. Ifeajuna joined 1961.
Obasanjo and Nzeogwu joined the Army before 1960. That year, they were in Congo during the UN peacekeeming mission.

The fear of the intelligence and wits of Ojukwu made the Queen of England to appoint Gowon Head of the army! Gowon seems more loyal to the dictates of the colonial masters than Ojukwu who schooled in their Land, Oxford! Imperial interests since the days of Adam
Do you know what you are saying. Gowon became HoS in July 1966, six year after independence, three years after the attainment of republic, two years after the last British GOC of the Nigerian Army left; how could Queen Elizabeth have made Gowon HoS?

If you choose to believe that power was handed over to Gowon, then it's from Muratala Muhammed, T.Y. Danjuma and Martins Adamu, who led the counter coup, not Queen Elizabeth.

This picture is not 1959.. This picture was 1963.

General Forster left and ironsi was made head by azikiwe. This picture was taken during the sendforth of General Forster

zik had no power to make anyone head of the army. the power to do so rests with the Prime Minister, Balewa. the president then had no real powers.

meanwhile, as you guys enjoy front page shows of tonto dike and yemi alade, about 76 men have dissappeared in the south east after a clash with fulani cattle rearers. this happened in enugu state. no word from the military, no word from the police, we no hear madam oby who has effectively and conveniently forgotten the chibok girls. Oga cattle chief of daura who would waste no time in fighting for the fulani cattle men, or getting rivers filled with security men, is apparently unpertubed by the menace of the cattle rearers.

meanwhile where are all those igbos shouting sai buhari? where is father mbaka? one day one story. this is what you asked for, you got it. go to the north, boko haram slaughters you, go to the east, fulani cattle rearers follow you, go to court, APC judges lock you up, go to lagos, your shops are taxed or burnt down, and if you talk. . . there's always the lagoon, they dont hide their hatred of you either. go to nairaland, ethnic bigotry and nigerian igbophobia tears you apart. buhari and his govt cant hide his disdain for the 5%, translate, igbos. the only reason i like them. . . . when the bubble bursts they will make no distinction between those igbos who shouted sai buhari and those of us who scream chai buharikwa grin

while you were shouting Sai Buhari, I told you then, and I tell you now. . .
they will never like you
they have never liked you
they wont stop harassing you in lagos
they wont stop killing you in the north.
if you like change to islam, speak yoruba, take yoruba names, speak hausa, defend buhari on the internet, . . . . they will never like you. . .
now the whole east of over 10 million people are now gripped with apprehension bc of the federal government backed fulani cattle rearers and blood suckers. . .

let me just pretend that this story from vanguard is not true. . . .

Ironsi was the most senior military officer under Balewa. He stopped the coup. He didnt take over the govt, but the national assembly, full of cowards (it's easy to judge them now but I admit I dont know the tension they may have felt at that time) under the senate president, decided to hand over to the military. and so they called ironsi and asked him to take over.

the politicians might have feared for their lives bc of what happened a few yrs earlier in the congo, where there was instability and the nation was going into civil war when stability was restored by the congolese military under mobutu, so they hoped the nigerian military would do the same especially as many of the nigerian officers were part of the UN mission to the congo during their crisis.

someone once told me there is a divine purpose Nigeria is made for in the history of the world. the astrologers, CIA, MI6 saw doom in Nigeria in 2015 it was clear as daylight the West knew there would be lots of bloodshed but at the end of the day there was mercy on this nation. don't get it twisted Nigeria is destined to be great only if the youth know the half of the story

what if Jonathan's heart was hardened and didn't handover power? look at Syria, and people would be yaning beans online...there is Grace on this nation if you don't know

Shehu Shagari and Richard Akinjide who were ministers in the cabinet said they never handed over power on will to Ironsi but were forced to by the GOC himself.

After the abduction of the PM, Tafawa-Balewa, the minister chose Zana Dicherima as the acting PM, but the acting President Nwafor Orizu refused to swear him in. The NCNC members insisted on making Ozumba Mbadiwe the acting PM.
