Bro, I'm not in the mood to exchange words back and forth with your type. The issue being discussed on this thread is meant for serious brains not bitter emotional political losers. Thanks.
I don't k how much they pay you to be defending them blindly. The reason why this country is not moving forward is because of people like you. The reason why the youths don't have a place in Nigerian govt is because of people like you. They paid you to come here and confuse people with things that don't exist. The first time Audu Ogbe mentioned grass importation, he said it will stop Fulani herdsmen from invading people's farms in search of food for their cows. People reacted against if, now they have changed it that it will increase milk production just to deceive Nigerians. Don't think you can deceive everybody here with those useless points you raised there, you talked about things that don't exist and you know it.
Talking of being a looser, PDP and APC, who is a looser in Nigeria today or do u think the game ended at the polls? The masses make the govt work, when a govt comes up with a policy that does not go well with the masses, they'll protest against it by any form or means available to them and the govt will sit up,change what ever policy or stop it. Here the reverse is the case. Anytime this govt goes against the people's wish, people like you will accept money from them, come here to attack anybody that says against such bad move by the govt and that is why Buhari and APC think they can do anything and Nigerians cannot do anything.

The points I made and the points Audu Ogbeh made are very simple and clear for any person with the most basic education to understand; it is bot rocket science and at least, I believe we all did a little of agric science in high school. There are several things to gain from the initiative which includes a boost in beef and milk production and in addition, with the plan to have cattle restricted to the grass reserves, cattle herders wouldnt have to move their cows around in search of pasture and this would help avoid the recurrent clashes between the herdsmen and farmers. What on earth is so difficult to underatand in this most basic explanation?

Now the real reason why Nigeria isnt moving forward is because of people that you who have instead of applying some common sense and focus to discern a very simple initiative like this, you have emotionally chosen to only view and judge everything in this life from the microscopic prism of political/ethnic/tribal/religious sentiments. That is the exact reason the black man is backwards and that is the exact reason the older generation has refused to relinquish power to the youths; the youths exemplified by your manner of reasoning have clearly not shown any sigm that we are ready to take over.... we choose to dwell purely on emotions and refuse to use our God given intellects.

For the records, I am not a card carrying member of any political party (even though I have my leanings to the apc strictly because of Buhari and my disgust for what pdp has done to this country for 16 years). I dont personally know any politician and I am not even resident in Nigeria. I am just a concerned Nigerian who gets irked by the reasoning of people I encounter on social media everyday. For crying out loud, what on earth is so difficult for educated people to understand in this simple initiative?... why do we always see everything as a ground to make political arguments?

Malaysia did not import our oil palm seed. They took a sample and develop it. They gave us half of what they developed but Obasanjo mis manage the strain. We need to develop the strain not import and consume.
What does taking mean? You mean when Malaysia took samples from Nigeria to their country, they didn't import it? What kind of nonsense is this? When things move between countries, it is imported and exported!

One of the greatest impediments to the progress of the black man and the black race is our inability to read, our inability to discern and our inordinate urge to 'respond' even before we listen.

The article simply exposes the ignorance of all those castigating the plan to import high nutrient grass seedlings for cultivation in Nigeria. This firstly, is standard practice in agriculture all over the world, but common sense is obviously not too common especially when political sentiments are involved. I can swear on my life that 95% of the respondents above did not read beyond the 3rd line, but mostly read the title and proceeded to comment. Maybe if they read the article, they would have firstly realised it was written by an independent veterinarian and not the minister (as the title implies) and they would have also seen some sensible points.

If it takes decades of research to genetically create a new specie of high nutrient grass which has the capacity to boost beef and milk production beyond our imagination, then my common sense tells me it is definitely silly trying to re-invent the wheel; the sensible thing to do is to take the short-cut by simply obtaining those already optimised grass seedlings and growing them here in Nigeria. Just the same way we imported improved flood resistant rice seedlings some years back which has in no little way contributed to the rice revolution in different parts of Nigeria today. For clarity for those who are oblivious of this, "grass is not grass" and there is a reason why people spend several years studying agriculture in the university and research institutes even when our great grand fathers knew exactly how to sow and reap basic food crops.

A point of note in the article is milk production, Nigeria imports over 90% of the milk it consumes spending over $200m annually on this. A typical Nigerian milk cow produces 200kg of milk annually whereas a typical European milk cow produces up to 6500kg of milk annually, i.e. over 3000% more milk production. The main difference is the nutritional content of the feedstock these cows consume. Ironically, the same people who protest the plan to import improved grass seedlings (for planting) to improve our beef and milk production do not protest the billions we spend importing milk yearly; these same people (probably because of warped political logic) did not also see anything wrong when improved rice seedlings were imported few years back to help boost Nigeria's rice production capacity.

What I find most disheartening about these comments I have quoted is that most of the respondents here are youths, educated youths; and then we begin to wonder why the old have refused to relinquish power. They may claim not to be agriculturists, but that is definitely no excuse for this ignorance because anyone with even partial education should be able to discern these things. If only we can sometimes purge our minds of flimsy political sentiments, then some of these things are just common sense.
Personally I don't have any problem with the importation of the grassy thing because I read the whole article it's a good one but my interest and is how will these "imported grasses" be introduced since there are very few or no cattle/animal ranch in this country. My suggestion is that cattle ranches should be built across the south before the introduction of the imported grasses

Let us eschew partisanship and be objective about these issues.

The government claims that they have discovered Grasses that have 28% Crude Protein, do we have any grass in Nigeria, either in the North or South, that have such high protein? To the best of my knowledge there is none. So what is wrong in importing such highly protein gas with a view to domestically grow it.

If government implements this idea correctly animal husbandry in Nigeria would witness a revolution.

Cheers.
Importing grasses is unnecessary and clearly show that the govt don,t have a sound blue print to address problems at hand (Stopping Nomad ism, milk importation and poor beef production).

What is required is for Govt to demystify the concept that rearing cow is the exclusive right of the Fulani and you need large space to rear cows for beef/milk production. Govt should create enough support for unemployed graduates in term of finances and expertise to move into dairy and cattle rearing in Clusters.

Create awareness and Drive implementation of zero grazing system in cattle rearing. You just need to have like 2 to 5 improved cows to get result which means an average Nigeria family can practice dairy farming even in his backyard with small space.

Have a well established artificial insemination (AI) service system that will enhance the multiplication of improved cattle across the country.
Resettle the Fulani herdsmen to different settlement, re orientate them on the zero grazing system and provide them with technical support.

Provide a framework for Milk Companies like Wamco etc to create Milk Collection centers in Fulani settlement and Cluster across the country to collect milk and pay cash on a weekly basis to farmers. If we have enough small scale cow farmers in the country, we have no business importing milk and Fulani farmers will be forced out of business if they don,t adapt to zero grazing system.

Govt should leave grass business to Research Institutes like IITA etc. Zero Grazing System was introduced in Kenya in 1980s as a Dairy Developmental Project with bilateral cooperation with the Dutch and we can all see their success rate. Zero grazing system will also release lands for other uses.

I now know the reason why you always support what this govt does because you don't live in Nigeria. I was wondering how a sane person in Nigeria today will still be standing in support of all the policies, actions and propaganda of Buhari and APC govt with the current situation of things in Nigeria right now.
My brother Nigerians are suffering, a lot of things have gone worse. Do u know how many people that Fulani herdsmen killed in Agatu and how they killed them? Do u know how these herdsmen destroy farmlands and kill the owners in the South east and Mr President turned deaf ears to all these. Now you want to tell us that the only way to stop this nonsense is by importing grasses for them to grow or cross breed what. The first time they talked about importing these grasses, they never mentioned boosting cow milk production and meat production. Let me tell you, there has never been any processed cow milk by Nigeria in Nigerian market, it's only Fulani and otherother local Hausas that extra cow milk manually to drink. So what mechanism do they have on ground for cow milk processing. It is a move on the right direction for Nigeria govt to establish and sustain processing of cow milk from Nigerian cows for consumption but that is not what we need fight now, there are other pressing issues directly affecting the daily lives of Nigerians which need to be addressed urgently. Nigerians are suffering, there has been serious fuel scarcity in Nigeria since last month, so much queues in filli g stations and our minister for Petroleum said publicly he can't do anything that he's not a magician. Is this govt? You said PDP spoilt Nigeria for 16yrs and I ask you, what exactly did they spoil, what exactly is working in Nigeria today that did not work better during PDP's Administration. PDP left over 4000mw in power, today we're trying to even get 2000MW. This govt is causing hardship to the masses and the worst is the so called President do not care. He keeps deceiving gullible Nigerians with fight against corruption meanwhile this govt is the most corrupt so far in the history of Nigerian democracy. Any govt that builds on lies and propaganda is corrupt. Any govt who does not obey court orders is corrupt. Any govt who violates human right is corrupt. This a govt who could not conclusively conduct just state elections. This govt lie's to the citizen everyday. The latest and most shameful one is the $200b saga which the EFCC said Nigerian past leaders dumped in Dubai banks and bought houses in Dubai with it. UAE came out publicly to deny that saying total foreign cash and investment in Dubai is not mode that $108b. So how come only Nigerians stashed $200b to Dubai? No govt can succeed with lies and propaganda which is what PMB's govt is doing. The rate of increase in inflation over d past few months have never been recorded since 1999 and u said PDP spoilt Nigeria. When this govt came into powerin may 2015, the rehabilitation work on our refiniries were almost completed and as at Nov/Dec Kaduna refiniry started operation with that of Warri. Are they working today? The last PDP govt introduced TSA, BVN, reduced ghost workers, build almajiri schools, built and commission universities nationwide, what has this govt achieved. Forex is scarce because of bad policy by CBN. People can't pay their children's school fees abroad, manufactures can no longer import materials for their factory, thousands of jobs are lost everyday, economy is stand still and all you can focus on is to import grasses for cows so dat we can start processing milk and increase meat production. Give me one reason why the govt is not clueless.

The writer presents such a compelling argument in favor of importing enriched grass for our livestock, that its hard not to see the sense in it.

In summary...
....i don't think the reason for the low milk production is simply because of the grass...no...i have a poultry and i know that egg, meat production is astonishing behind closed doors compared to free ranging birds which roam. cows, cattle can never do well when their lives are spent roaming the country as nomads by their herdsmen, its never possible. i've had broilers reach weights more than 5kg and their bird feed is made locally. I'm still wondering how the nomadic cows would benefit from imported grass. my opinion though.

In addition to getting the high nutrient grass, the plan also includes restricting the movement of the cattle to confined reserves where the grasses would be planted. That should solve point you just made.

You cant restrict movement of cattle's to confined reserves.

How do you restrict nomadics that take pleasure in travelling from Katsina to Ogun state with their cows which takes an average of six months.

What Audu Ogbe need to give an holistic approach to handle these problems not just importing grasses and restriction.

You answered your question in your post already. They don't do well because they roam about in search of good grass. If we can breed grass that can stay highly nutritious in one place, they don't have to roam everywhere.

Go and educate yourself and stop displaying politically driven ignorance. There is nothing wrong in importing high nutrient grass seedlings for cultivation in Nigeria which has the capacity to explosively multiply both beef and milk production. Grass is not grass, read the freaking article first before you jump into comments; this is standard agricultural practice all over the world and this is the reason people spend years in universities and research institutes studying agriculture. You cannot expect progress when you continue practising archaic agric methods and this is the difference that has always separated Africa from the developed.
You're funny. Which grass are the cows we have in Nigeria today eating? Is it not the same grass we have in the country? Or did they import the one you're advocating and placed them on the way? How on earth did you dig up such a dead and rotten thread?...

Meanwhile after refreshing my mind on the topic, and then reading your response, I'm forced to ask a question?... Besides the basic knowledge of reading and writing, do you have any other form of education?.. I'd imagine anyone who completed secondary school should have understood my point above.

Anyway, I'll only advise you to go back and read the same thing I wrote earlier. If you couldn't comprehend my point that all grass isnt the same, same way all species of rice or maize aren't the same, then I'm sorry; my post was probably not suited for someone like you.
