mercy aigbe, Nollywood is an Igbo creation, that started with Igbo speaking films and actors e.g- Living in Bondage,Nneka the serpent girl etc Until it was changed to English speaking inorder to accomodate actors from Other tribes.
Thats the main reason Yorubawood came out but Nollywood is ahead of it and a global brand and 3rd largest in the world.
There is no descrimination in it, Igbo Movie Producers have used Mercy Johnson a lot in their films, she is a kogi lady. Ini edo, Omotala, Nse ikpe Etim, Olu Jacob, Kate henshaw etc are NON Igbos that have excelled in the Igbo Created Nollywood.
Mercy aigbe, stop this whinning.
I dont think she is talking about the tribe but the divide between English speaking actors and their counterpart.

No. I wanted to counter this lady whinning with facts.
Nollywood has yoruba actors/actresses who have excelled in the industry.
People may mistaken Olu Jacob as an Igbo man due to his regularity in playing Igwe but He is a yoruba.. You see my point now.

Igbo movie started with glamour girls(1994), nneka the pretty serpent but before that yoruba movie have bin dishing out solid movies before then e.g Ti oluwa lo ni Ile (1993) Nkan nla(1990) orun mu orun(1989 baba sala) and so on.

Note nollywood is not the 3 biggest industry in the world because of the English movie buh the amount of movies that comes out of yoruba side week in week out.

I dont know why dis lady is complaining, must you associate yoruba movies with the wack nollywood films
yorubas started acting intelligent stage drama, movies even before all these blood money movie script started.
You don't have to badmouth anybody, they are all good. The excessive love for anything Yoruba made some of our actors and actresses fhanshy the english movies, let them discriminate against them jare. The best thing for you to do is act English and act Yoruba movies intermittently because I know Yorubas even some non yorubas love anything yoruba and they will never abandon their Yoruba movies.Yoruba language is like opium.Ask Cuba,Brazil etc and those white people who are learning to speak yituba language by thunder by force...lol

Mercy is complaining about Yoruba actors, what about Hausa actors. Do you hear them complain, despite the fact that they have their own channel on DSTV.

Mercy think say she don open eye. Yoruba movies are for Yoruba people.. Chikena. They should not expect any mention from Nollywood.

I do. I know when Nollywood started and true to your words, they started as igbo speaking entity but has evolved into a robust machine over the years.

However, I prefer watching Yoruba movies to Nollywood English movies because of deep rooted reality that they display with a good lesson to learn from it. They are often consistent with suspense and intrigues. The only problem I have is their inclusion of native doctor in every movie, but we can't shy away from the fact that it's OUR custom and culture.

Most of the English version are full of too much noise and repetition under different settings; only a few are view-worthy.

rubbish. Nollywood is a film brand that was created by the Igbos. Every Nigerian knows that.
(the first time movies were branded into a cassette and sold at home and globally.)
Those yoruba film you called are Theater Acts..

A good actress/actor should have the ability to appeal to numerous audience.

Even Hollywood actors learn new languages when they want to act as a non-English speaker. They learn new accent and sometimes even add or reduce some weight!
The Yoruba actors/actresses need to STOP WHINING about discrimination.
They are the ones discriminating themselves by not making effort to have cross-over appeal.

Omotola is one of the biggest actress in Nigeria. She has numerous yoruba movies to her name and numerous English movies to her name and she has even acted as an igbo girl.

Hmm mm....
Please tell me the name of the yoruba film you saw Omotola in or where she was speaking ibo

Bimbo Akintola, Segun Arinze, Desmond Elliot, Ayo Adesanya, Olu Jacobs, Bukky Ajayi, Joke Silva, Funke Akindele, Jide Kosoko...

These people act English movies as well because they're well learned.

Acting as an Igbo girl in an English movie isn't a big deal but to Igbo in Igbo is.

Take a look at Rachael Oniga, a Deltan, acting both Yoruba n Igbo speaking movie.

I've seen some Igbos acted Yoruba speaking movies.

Though, I don't watch Igbo speaking movies because I dnt really understand the language and I dunno if the super-celebs feature in them.

Nope, we knew about yoruba movies before the existence of Nollywood and that's what that brother want you to know. We had lots of yoruba movies aired on TV and I remember watching "Ogunde" at the National Theeater Iganmu as a kid. It wasn't a stage act but a movie and also remember I couldn't sleep for weeks cos it was scary as hell.

The problem with Nollywood is Nollywood.Remove the Nolly for Nigeria and make it Igbowood or Biafrawood and you would see people like Mercy keep mum instantly.
But Nollywood basically was started by the yorubas when my mother had not even been birthed.
So because Mikel Obi etc are making it now, they should forget Segun Odegbami etc.
This is a period of doing little and getting more but their time was doing more and getting little.
It is everywhere:Music-sing thrash and be known worlwide and roll in money. No lyrics like Victor Uwaifo etc.Victor Uwaifo and co were pioneers of music in Nigeria.
Football:Become a professional who can not even play
like Xtian Chukwu but will buy Xtian Chukwu manyfold. But Xtian Chukwu and co are pioneers in football in Nigeria.
Nollywood encompasses all Nigerians but was pioneered by Hubert Ogunde and co.
Even if we have 5 Yorubas among 100 Igbos, the Yorubas would still win the laurels because they are very good.Go and ask AMVCA.

i understand where you are coming from, but in business, we have something called a Brand.
Raw Fulani cow milk is not a brand But Cowbell is a milk brand that is marketed.
Theater Acts existed in our local channels all over the country then.
Mercy should stop this dividing methods she wants to introduce in the Nigeria film industry, even Omotola will disagree with her in these recent assertations.

So Because Someone Can't Speak English-Language That Has Literally Mean The Person Is An Illiterate Abi??

There's A Wide Difference Between English And Illiteracy

There Are Alot Of People That Are Very Fluent In English But They're A Stark Illiterate

And

There Are Alot Of People That Can't Speak English At All But They're Very Very Literate!

Even In America There Are Alot Of Illiterates But Because They Speak English As A Language We Believe They're Literate Which Is A Total TurnOff For Me!

Can CHINA Speak English?
Can JAPAN Speak English?
Can FRANCE Speak English?
Can ISREAL Speak English?
Can INDIA Speak English?
And Yet They're The Best Countries With Alot Of Innovations!

But Here In Nigeria We Believe That Once A Person Is Good In English - That Has Literally Mean The Person Is Literate Which Is Wrong!

Nigerians Are Illiterates For Thinking That Way!

We're Here Celebrating English While Our Own Language Is At The Verge Of Extinction!

Here comes another pathological liar, which Yoruba sector when they ain't recognised as part of Nollywood.

The English movie made Nollywood the three biggest worldwide. The Nollywood movies that made it so, are those films shot alone in Asaba and Enugu.
