Besides, court marriage doesn't stop a crazy/unfaithful man from being crazy/unfaithful. It doesn't even stop them from impregnating another woman. 'At worst you will call for divorce'!

The important thing is marrying a good man your bone and flesh, even without any form of marriage, he will cherish and Love you!

Marriages crumble with or without the registry; what matters is the marriage to last the test of time, not whether it is Approved by the government or not

It is no longer news that tradition is the opium of the people and no one is contending that.

But when it comes to marriage,while some believe that without paying of bride price,the man can not be said to be married to a lady and some believe that without the white wedding,a marriage can not be said to have received GOD's blessings.

Well i'm not here to discus on that aspect of marriage and i had to drop this quick one as a result of the mentioned i got on a thread relating to this.

And this is very true for some reasons but i will mention a few.

1. He can not just wake up one day and say he does not like your face again and send you out of your matrimonial home.
2. He dares not marry another wife except he divorces you
3. He must have a valid reason for divorcing you and must be able to convince the court.
4. You have protection under the law for yourself and your child(ren) in case he dies

I can continue to list several other reasons but let me just stop here.If you like, say you trust your husband,he loves you,he can never treat you bad..O.Y.O lo wa.

If you like let the man spend 1billion on your traditional wedding and do a white,blue,green,indigo wedding with a trillion naira. The fact is that these two ceremonies combined with all the money spent is not as binding and constitutional as a simple court wedding with just 4 people in attendance.

Unfortunately we have seen many people getting away with bad acts despite the fact that they had a legal wedding but the reason is because the affected individual usually lets go without putting up a fight due to high cost of legal battle and no thanks to parents and family members who always preach to them that "what is yours will always stay with you" and that they should let go which i see as stories for the gods.

Ladies be wise..as an endangered specie in the cruel world of men,legal wedding was specifically created to protect more of the lady's marital right so take advantage of it or ignore at your own risk.

court registry is just about 70 years old in Nigeria ....so what happen to our grand fathers and fathers that married before the commencing of European court system ....where they not married,or million of muslims and ifa worshipper that married daily,guy pls don't get over carried by European way of live ....all marriage na marriage one it suit the individual and families

@OP, the courts do honor customary unions and there are customary courts that adjudicate on such matter. So marriage papers needn't be signed to formalize a union. I agree though that for the sake of the woman when things go south marriage contracts be signed.

Again, the courts allow for designated places of worship to issue out marriage certificates on their behalf. So marrying in any of these places (the orthodox and old generation pentecostal denominations IMO) is as good as marrying in court. My opinion.

In the beginning it were not so and marriages flourished. The west started it and the mind being evil created a means where women use the court wedding to misbehave and will still go with almost all your possession if they had kids for you. Check all the countries with this court marriage thing divoce is on the rise. Let's leave things open ,if you like you can do but not a must. Love your wife and wife respect your man. End of story.

Op is 100% wrong. All can be regularised and legally binding.

Just like births & deaths of old, one is required to register the trad marriage at the council office. When u process any doc together as a couple, it can be used in the absence of a registry marriage cert. Even UK & US embassy accept it.

The white wed cert is collected from and returned to the council for filling after the wedding(form-e 1st schedule). Apart from the customization of church name and branch, etc printed on it, it looks similar to the registry cert. The church collect it as a booklet. Duringthe ceremony u sign 3 copies, one for you, the church, and the registrg

Finally, the registry marriage cert albeit most important, is the simplest of all. Its just a generic form where 2 people fill with 2 witnesses that they agree to the marriage. The witnesses don't need to be family members except one of the candidate is a minor. Even the venue can be anywhere and filled by hand by a minister or registrar

The 3 of them become legal once they are hand written into the marriage register with no and date. People can even back date their wedding by years if they are ready to pay. The clerk just goes to a day in that month that has space in the register and manually writes it in.

If Op was legally married, he would have known.

The US embassy in Nigeria ONLY accepts court wedding certificate.

Unless you've gone through the process, no 3rd hand info, please do not argue this simple fact so as not to mislead others.

Only three things need to occur, roughly:

1) tell your wife she's your wife now, she tells you you're her husband

2) you introduce her to someone as this is my wife

3) a reasonable person have enough probable cause to assume that you're hitched

This fresh face have lived 4 decades on earth and i have no reason to be dealt with by any woman except the one that wants to be lost because i always maintain a proper decorum and i always have an open mind policy in any affair i am into meaning i always expect her to walk away anytime no matter how well i treat her which is the best way to approach any affair to avoid serious heart breaks

Nevertheless,legal wedding does not bind the man and woman together by fire by force.If you are tired of him or her you can always get a divorce which is far better than just waking up one day and send her packing because she puts too much salt in your food.

More painful is the way some wicked families treat the wife and children of the dead man and i have seen many wives and children of a well to do man suffering simply because they have no strong threshold to fight back.

Very, very incorrect! So what happens to our forefathers who married their wives the traditional way only? Legal marriages only give the women a licence to rob their husbands via divorce. To me, a marriage is legal once you've paid up all necessary bride price to the girl's parents.

The UK accept traditional marriage registration certificate and I believe the US should too. 1st hand info here as per UK.

Lagos state govt has approved a man can marry two wives, all you need do is take her to state registry.

So how many marriages has court wedding saved?
Rather we hear flimsy reasons like "irreconcilable differences", "lack of passion", "he is not always home" etc, as reasons for divorce. And now in one of the Scandinavian countries, it is been canvassed that adultery shouldn't be a determinant for filling for divorce!!! Yes, you heard right!

Fact is, man's law offers no true solution to marital problems. And no man born of a woman, who sits on a high bench of legal proceedings will ever determine if my marriage stays or fails.
