Mallam Muhammad Musa Bello, the FCTA Minister, while speaking yesterday when members of the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers, NIESV paid him a courtesy visit told the body that the Federal Government of Nigeria would soon put in place a law that would force downward, cost of accommodation in the Federal Capital Territory.

He explained that the current Buhari-led administration was deeply concerned with the high cost of housing in the territory and was working out modalities that would guarantee access to decent accommodation by the masses and less privileged.

The Minister who tasked members of NIESV on a viable solution to end high cost of accommodation in Abuja, also challenged the body to have a downward review of their professional fee, stressing that although the concept of estate development was a very commendable one, the industry was facing many challenges in the capital city, questioning the rationale behind payment of rent on annual basis in the country.

He further pointed out that as a professional body that was primarily concerned with provision of houses, the NIESV has a burden of ensuring that accommodation does not get out of the reach of the common man.

Bello said, “As a body, you must take deliberate steps to bring down the cost of accommodation through reduction of your charges and commissions.

“I know that you charge between 10-15% but I think that rate needs to come down, else at some point in the future, legislation will force you to bring it down.’’

The Minister wondered why Nigerian citizens would pay rent on a yearly basis whereas in developed countries such as United Kingdom and United states, tenants pay rents on a monthly basis.

He queried, “Why should we pay rent annually in Nigeria; why should we pay two, three years in advance.

“All the people you see here including the Minister get their rent allowance on a monthly basis, only very few organisations in Nigeria pay rent allowance annually in bulk.

“Why can’t we start asking our tenants to pay rent monthly even if they are in Asokoro, Maitama or wherever?”

The Minister disclosed that as part of the moves to make housing affordable in Abuja, the FCT Administration has put the necessary measures in place to ensure that all plots of land not developed within a stipulated period would be revoked and re-allocated to willing developers, adding that the number of uncompleted buildings and empty estate houses in the city was very alarming and a committee would soon be set up to look into the issue.

when govt are owing for 5 months that means they should sleep outside coz definitely the landlord won't hesitate to do the needfull

Why are These ministers just dull in thinking like their master?

This is a poorly thought out statement by the Honorable minister.
Does he know that abroad people take loans to buy or build houses so it's easier for them to give out their houses on a monthly rate and pay back to the banks monthly as well.
In Nigeria, we have a cash based economy. When you build a house, you do it out of pocket. So you cannot expect a landlord to collect monthly rent.

These people will get a seat and start saying nonsense. If they want house rents to be paid monthly, they should instruct companies to pay workers weekly and should be consistent

Their levels of education is zero. Do they think in sane countries where house rents are paid monthly don't smile to the bank on a day like this (Friday). ?

Edited: these ministers disgrace themselves sometimes with their speeches.

Re-edited: our leaders think like toddlers

Just imagine this asshole of a minister "The Minister wondered why Nigerian citizens would pay rent on a yearly basis whereas in developed countries such as United Kingdom and United states, tenants pay rents on a monthly basis".

I wonder if ministers (both past and present) think before they talk? they only compare the western world with us when they want to implement silly policies.

I wonder if our economy is as strong as theirs, if we have to pay monthly rent then our salaries must reflect same, not all this 30k or 100k per month jobs. The only companies that reflect same are multinational companies.

We are watching...rather than making all the linking routes to suburbs motorable for those who cannot afford houses @ the city centre, they want to force LANDLORDS to reduce cost of renting their houses... ok na, we dey watch! Afterall "they (gomati)are the owners of such uninhibited houses in the city centre"

....These people don't know what to do next...
What concerns the government with landlord and tenant contract,if one doesn't like the term and condition you leave...and if they really want to help they should build houses for people to rent but in the long run we know it is the "well-to-dos" that will rent the house...when they say a room per month is 10,000 Naira which is some people salary per month ... Nigeria as a country is just going to sleep and waking up everyday and leaving things to the hands of fate..we take what we see and not what will made happen...

I wish i could just get a free travel fund even if it is to Ghana down the road..
