You did not do wrong by saving since they would have killed him and he would have gone to hell. You then could have gone a step further to preach the gospel to him so he could be fully saved.

Sin surely have magnitude. That means some sins are greater than others. For example, sins against the Holy Spirit won't be forgiven. While others can be forgiven if one truly repents. That surely signifies some sins are greater than others

Yes , it is a sin. If they asked you whether you saw a thief, you couldn't probably know he is a thief, so the answer could be no since you didn't see him steal. If they asked whether you saw a man running, you can ask for more details and if by chance they miss a small detail, that is enough ground to say no. If they were able to give vivid description you have no option than to release him to them but you pray within yourself that God should touch them not to kill him. You can because yo want to save someone now loose your soul to lie. Don't displease God to please man. Peter said he would rather obey God than to obey man. Acts 5:29
