Marriage License is not a guarantee of Good marriage. Nothing is a Guarantee for a Good marriage..

But I assure you that when an abused spouse goes to court with her marriage license, that is when you will know what powers lie within that license.

The OP presented a very valid assertion, but these ignorant people have turned the advice into their myopic religious sermons. A smart man knows enough to sign a prenuptial agreement if you must engage in the court marriage thing, but best thing is to avoid it if possible. I really do not understand the reason a man should pay alimony for an ex until she finds a new husband, while they go around fucking every dick. I understand the child support but alimony is the reason many men are scared in marriage and becoming lame dogs cos no one wants to slave for a certain ex all his life.
