University Of Calabar Retires Professor For Plagiarism by fromnigeria(op): 7:49am On Apr 14, 2016
The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has expelled 33 students for alleged examination malpractice. The Vice-Chancellor (VC), Prof Zana Akpagu, made this known during a briefing.
A professor, the VC said, was also retired by the Senate for plagiarism.
Prof Akpagu said the development was in line with his mission to rid the school of indiscipline and restore its academic glory. He reiterated management’s stance against corruption, saying: “The affected students and staff are shown the way out to restore discipline and integrity.”
He said UNICAL was the only school offering a course on anti-corruption, noting that the course was introduced in collaboration with the Independent Corrupt Practice and other Allied Matters Commission (ICPC) to inculcate good values in students.

The Pro-chancellor, Dr Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, who is also the chairman of the Governing Council, said the council supported the anti-corruption crusade of the VC, noting that it was in line with President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration’s anti-graft policy.
Iwuanyanwu said: “There is corruption everywhere. Our professors and intellectuals should sit down and formulate strategies to curb academic corruption. We must create platform to stop abuse of students by lecturers. We have to discourage sorting and bribery by academic staff. We don’t want corruption to be mentioned with the name of this university.”
Iwuanyanwu challenged the university staff and students to report corrupt practice wherever they notice it. He said such would help the management to drive its policy of making the school the best in Africa.

Yes, the fight for corruption should start from our homes and schools.

It's easy to bend an iron when hot not when cold.

He should be stripped of the professorship because am sure the plagiarism was done in his Professorship thesis.

*Modified*

So, since I wrote the above some persons have called me ignorant, some said i should hide while others are disputing the FACT that you don't have to write a thesis or dissertation to become a Proffessor! Hmmm,

well, my grandfather is a Proffessor so I know for a fact that dissertations are written and evaluated by fellow professors of the home institution and other institutions during the consideration period for Professorship.

An associate professor before being conferred as a full professor must have written several papers (call it thesis or dissertation), but write you must.

The body of work done (in my grandfather's case) was then sent to three professors in 1)Uniben 2)OAU 3)UNN. For evaluation. If two out of the three give a positive score or evaluation, the lecturer in question is conffered but if they don't, the lecturer is not and remains an associate proffessor.

A lecturer of mine who has remained an associate proffessor for several years complained last year of politics in the evaluation of his work in the institution and requested that his dissertations and body of work be sent out to other institutions for evaluation.

So yes you have to write several dissertations or papers or thesis to become a proffessor, it is not handed out like candy.

Unical is not the only uni offering anti-corruption course. I also did studies in anti-corruption in UNIBEN at the PG level.
For plagiarism, its a big offence. How lazy or stingy is that prof not to run plagiarism test on the article or book.

Most Nigerian book authors mostly are lazy writers. They will just get a foreign book, remove the cover page and put their name, thereafter, they start selling it for students.

If ur fada na lecturer pls warn him of plagiarism and student extortion.

I need 3 trustworthy and ethically upright persons to join me so we can subscribe to a better plagiarism checker called grammarly. Contact me through gp6liveth4ever@yahoo.com
