Thanks a lot. I'm actually considering distance to school, utilities etc in relation to the rent. If I get something a bit less expensive off campus and then end up spending the difference on transportation and utilities...well, as you suggested,I'll do a research on it and let you know whatever decision I arrive at.
You'll have to find where you'll be cooking your egusi soup, fry your plantain and all those your native soup. Check what the dorm entails cos you might have issues with this. Some dorms have only one central cooling system, meaning sometimes they might want the cooling which you wouldn't want.

It's cheaper, more convenient, less private , but good to study.

There are some Eco guys around that should be able to help you out. But first thing is to check that the school can overlook ur GP if you have a high GRE. Some schools have absolute cutoffs that cannot be ignored. Other schools are more open and say that stronger parts of your application can overcome the weaker parts.

I'd suggest that your GRE, TOEFL, SoP, LORs need to be extremely strong. It's going to be tough, but you can do it if you really want it. Your SoP should also explain your grades. Not in a self pitying way but you should spin your story to show how much stronger you are, the lessons you've learnt, etc. If you can package your application well, you'll have your pick of schools.

Regarding GRE, aim for 330. If you can achieve that, you'll be on the right path.

But never ever be discouraged. If you can dream it, forget any limitation you may think you have. Just believe.
I'm highly overwhelm with ur advice and may d lord Almighty bless u in abundance ,hanks alot

Ur unpreparedness for the interview was vivid, even to the VO.
U should have many reasons for the course you wish to study here and most importantly, what you stand to gain from the course when you finish back in Nigeria. Have strong reasons for the gap after high school till date.

Hi bbdd

I've been a silent reader and I read a question about USMLE someone posted to you a few days ago.
I'm a medical doctor in Nigeria on internship/housejob currently. I would like to know the steps on how I can convert to practice in the US. I know I have to write USMLE but I need some pointers on how to do it considering my current situation as an intern.

Anyone else with info can also help out. Anticipating some answers....Thanks guys!!

The process is a little confusing and I really don't know where to start. First, what is your budget like? The three route I can outline for you are:

1. Apply to Kaplan and be prepared to attend classes and live lectures- this should cost you about $9,000 for 10months study plan. This includes admission and sevis fee.

2. Write GRE and apply for Masters program. And look for a way to create a study plan for yourself or write your USMLE exams during your semester break or after masters, you can use your opt time to write the exams.

3. You can apply for Masters, switch to a language school which would cost like $500 monthly or apply to a community college and take easy classes while you study for your USMLE.

If you have specific questions you would like to ask please do. It would make it easier to get a more direct response.

Slimmy2005 delineated the steps well
In addition to that, where do you intend to write step 2? That can only be done in the US. Step 1 can be done in Ghana but the infrastructure there is challenging so it's better to do it in the US. More importantly, currently getting residency for foreign trained medical personnel is very difficult for reasons that would be too long to explain here; hence many get stranded by the cut-throat process but its certainly doable.

Many docs come to the US with this plan but change their mind due to the hassles because in Nigeria we do MB:BS while here it is an MD. Coupled with the fact that they trust their own US trained doctors more- which is totally understandable. Nursing doesn't have this challenge because they use a tiered system and have a lot of informal caregivers and nursing homes for geriatric patients they just need hands to train.

Anyway, as a safety net, apply to MPH or global health programs just so you can have something to fall back on in case residency doesn't work out. Then you can look for the apps online to help you with the AOCs.

Considering you're a house officer now, depending on whether you want to do NYSC or not, I would say focus more on an MPH/global health degree, do part 1, when you get here you can then do part 2. You can also look at clinical research programs after your mph. I know a couple of guys doing clinical research and they're excelling. You have options so just take your time and decide what you want.
Good luck.

Hey,
I hope your friend is doing well and studying hard for the exam.. Has she done part 1?
I would advice her to start researching community practice and less on specialties because Obamacare(affordable care act) is putting a lot of emphasis on community medicine and VA programs so they will need some people...I think...those should be less competitive than the classic residency for specialties but less pay.

Step 1 would be in August. We don't want to rush things. She intends looking into Internal Medicine anyway. But hopefully she would start Masters Fall, 2017.

Hello people. I noticed something yesterday which I want to point out. I have been asking departments and professors for G.A positions with no luck but never once asked the chair of my department although he and I have exchanged a couple of friendly emails when he realised I speak his native language. I got a mail yesterday from him asking about my situation regarding assistantship and how he could help. Being friendly and getting to know some of these people will actually help. Ciao.
