IS MIKEL ON NIGERIA'S 60-PLAYER LIST FOR RIO OLYMPICS?

by Samm Audu

Wednesday Apr 20, 2016. 07:36

AfricanFootball.com has exclusively gathered that Nigeria have compiled a list of as many of 60 players to be considered for the Rio Olympics in August with speculations that the country's skipper and Chelsea star Mikel Obi is on the list.

All qualifiers have been given a deadline of this week to submit a list of players they will possibly feature at the football event of the Rio Olympics, which begin in Brazil on August 4.

It was further understood that this long list of players will include several top Super Eagles stars and over-aged players.

Chelsea loanee Kenneth Omeruo and Lazio midfielder Ogenyi Onazi have already declared their interest to be part of the Rio Olympics action.

Other top stars who have been linked with the team include Chelsea star Mikel Obi and Watford striker Odion Ighalo.

Coach Samson Siasia has said he already has an idea of the three over-aged players he will pick for the summer games.

Some of the players who will represent the team at next month’s Toulon Festival in France are also on the list.

Nigeria are drawn in Group B along with Japan, Sweden and Colombia at the Rio Games.

Alex Iwobi Happy To Hear Kind Words From Arsenal Hero Kanu

Published: April 20, 2016

Nigeria international Alex Iwobi is delighted with the praise he got from former Arsenal hero Nwankwo Kanu.

The Hale End Academy product has impressed since breaking into the first team of the Gunners and could make his sixth consecutive start for the Londoners in Thursday’s Premier League tie against West Brom at the Emirates.

““As a kid, especially playing at Arsenal, I did look up to him. He was just a classy player and I have spoken to him a few times as well,” said Iwobi to Arsenal Player, according to arsenal.com.

“We have had conversations about Nigeria, about myself and what I need to do. (He says) to just be relaxed and he congratulated me and told me I was doing well.

“To hear that (praise) from such a player like him is crazy and I just have to prove him right. I don’t feel pressure, it is just a privilege to hear that.”

Kanu praised Iwobi in an interview with the official website of Arsenal in February, stating that he has all the ingredients to be the star Nigeria are looking for and is going to learn a lot from Arsene Wenger.

Nigeria midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has been named in Africa’s top 5 stars for the past week by France Football magazine.

READ: Enyimba train against Etoile set pieces

Onazi has struggled to pin down a first-team place at Italian club Lazio, but he grabbed a rare first-team appearance at the weekend when he scored in a 2-0 win over Empoli.

Last week, Nigeria youngster Alex Iwobi was named by France Football I the top 5 African stars.

The other players picked by France Football are Samuel Eto’o (Cameroon and Antalyaspor), Adlene Guediora (Algeria and Watford), Sambou Yatabare (Mali and Werder Bremen) and Islam Slimani (Algeria and Sporting Lisbon).

Rio 2016: Siasia gives condition for Ighalo, Mikel invitation

Posted By: Adeniyion:

April 20, 2016

With the growing calls for EPL duo, Odion Ighalo and Mikel Obi to be listed as overage members of the Dream Team VI squad for the Rio 2016 Men’s football Tournament, Coach of the side, Samson Siasia has stated that the overage slots will only be used for positions where they’d be relevant.

On Tuesday, former U-23 coach, Austin Eguavoen suggested that Ighalo and Mikel Obi be invited to the team as two of three overage players.

Eguavoen made a case for Ighalo as a match winner because of his style of player. However, though Siasia claims he appreciates the opinions on the matter he insists the decision to pick overage players will be tactical and be based on the needs of the team.

Ogenyi Onazi Wishes to Represent Nigeria at 2016 Olympics

April 19, 2016
Lazio midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi, has admitted he would love to play for Nigeria at the Olympic Games in August this year.

The 23-year-old is desperate to be part of the Dream Team VI to the competition in Rio.

“I spoke with [the coach] and it will be another chance for me to represent my country to achieve something important, for my country and for myself as well. I will be glad to be part of the [Olympic] team,” Onazi told Goal.

Meanwhile, coach of the Nigerian team, Samson Siasia, has revealed that he has already made up his mind about the three over-aged players he will pick.

“I already have in mind the three over-age players that I intend using at the Games,” Siasia said.

Nigeria have been drawn against Sweden, Japan and Colombia in Group B.

One of major reasons why I want Onazi in that team is he also belongs to the next generation. He is of same age bracket with the likes of Omeruo, Ajagun, Ndidi, Simon, Shehu Abdulahi, Ahmed Musa and co. If we see those ones as part of the new generation then Onazi who went through the youths system with them should be seen as such too.

I honestly, believe we dnt need Odion Ighalo in that Team. We can have the 3 over aged players from defense and midfield. My picks: Leon Balogun, Ogenyi Onazi and Victor Moses

Mikel?! Do we really need him? His presence will affect the team's playing style to me. I think we will be better off with the choice of a player who is quick in thinking, versatile, creative, pass very well & shoot accurately from distance. Personally, mikel & ighalo should not be considered. Give room to fresh legs.

We will be coming against tough opponents with experienced midfielders,it's better we fortify our team especially the midfield and defense departments, apart from Iwobi I don't see any other high profile player in that midfield, Mikel's presence will surely boost the confidence of other players to large extent.

I'm with you on this.

Mikel's wealth of experience will bring stability to d midfield. His defence ability will be a plus against d sweds, columbians parading d likes of Ibra, James Rod. Of this world...

No room for any excuse from coach siasia. Our best legs just have to be on board enroute to Rio.

Exclusive: Siasia Invites Roma Defender Abdullahi, Panathinaikos Midfielder Ajagun,Abubakar To Training Camp;Recalls Sokari,Etor

Published: April 20, 2016

Allnigeriasoccer.com understands that Nigeria U23s coach Samson Siasia has drawn up a list of players he intends to select for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

And there are some fresh invitees that made what you would rightly call a provisional squad list, with the former Nantes striker set to run the rule over Roma teenage sensations Sadiq Umar and Nura Abdullahi, KuPS defender Aliyu Abubakar and Panathinaikos loanee Abdul Ajagun during the get-together prior to the competition.

Other players that Siasia will monitor at the training camp include, but not limited to, K.V. Oostende striker Godwin Saviour and Barcelona defender Godswill Ekpolo.

The retired Nigeria international has shown his compassionate side as he plans to recall CS Sfaxien star Kingsley Sokari and Enyimba midfielder Daniel Etor, having omitted both players from his recent squads for leaving the Dream Team VI camp without permission just before the 2015 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations.

The Nigeria U23s will trade tackles with Sweden, Japan and Colombia in the group stage of the Olympic Games.

Mikel's recent form for Chelsea is cause for re-thinking his inclusion on the plane to Rio. He performed below average in his last two matches for Chelsea, repeatedly offering little to no cover for his defenders.

Or maybe it's because Chelsea have nothing to play for, hence he wasn't really bothered to be competitive in those matches.

Anyway, judging by overall form, I would include Mikel, Oshaniwa, and Leon Balogun as the overaged players.

Ibra would likely grab this chance of playing at a global tournament cos age ain't on his side, and it's doubtful if Sweden will qualify for the 2018 WC.

SERBIAN COACH WHO CALLED NIGERIAN PLAYER “BLACK IDIOT” QUITS

April 18, 2016

Coach of Olimpija Ljubljana, Marko Nikolic has agreed to leave the Slovenian league leaders a week after racially abusing one of his own players, Nigerian forward Blessing Eleke.

Nikolic called Eleke a “black idiot” after he felt the 20 year old spent too much time celebrating an equaliser when they forced Zavrc to a 1-1 draw on the 10th of April.

The 36 year old Serb defended his action insisting he made an emotional reaction as Eleke’s celebration meant there was less time for a winner and it wasn’t his intentions to offend the man who moved to Olimpija from league rivals Gorica in January.

Although his club initially refused to suspend him he was however handed a seven game ban by the Slovenian FA which forced his club to react.

“He made a mistake and had to pay for it, we have reached an agreement with Marko for him to resign as coach. He is a good coach, a good man” Chairman of Olimpija Ljubljana Milan Mandaric said.

I just love the way Siasia reaches out to so many players and gives them the opportuinity to prove themselves
I would love him to consider Ekong, Awaziem, Isaac Success A.Samuel, Chikatara Esiti, P. Onuachi, Ndidi, K.Madu for the preliminary list at least.

And for the Over age players
Omeruo, Mikel and Victor Moses

I just feel this players have the capacity to lead in their various positions and provide inspiration to the rest of the team.

I feel Nigeria should use this tournament to find a replacement for Ighalo or at least a capable sub or rival for the SE9 position

Arsenal Starlet Iwobi, Man City Striker Iheanacho, Liverpool Loanee Awoniyi Make Provisional Roster For Olympic Games

Published: April 20, 2016

Allnigeriasoccer.com has been informed that three players on the books of English Premier League giants have been named to the Nigeria U23s provisional roster ahead of 2016 Olympic Games.

Arsenal attacking midfielder Alex Iwobi first flirted with the Dream Team VI before earning his first cap for the senior squad and recently stated that he would love to be part of the squad for the Olympic Games.

Samson Siasia will observe the Hale End Academy product at close quarters during the training camp, his first step in selecting the final list of players that will represent Nigeria at the Olympic Games.

Manchester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho and Liverpool loanee Taiwo Awoniyi have also made the roster alongside one of Siasia’s favorite pupils, CD Feirense new signing Oghenekaro Etebo.

As part of their preparations for the Olympic Games, the Nigeria U23s will participate in the 2016 Tournoi Espoirs de Toulon next month in France.

Nigeria U23s Star Umar Aminu Set For Showdown Talks With Osmanlispor Over Participation At Olympic Games

Allnigeriasoccer.com understands that Osmanlıspor striker Umar Aminu is set to hold showdown talks with the management of the Turkish Super Lig side over his participation in the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.

Several times in 2015, the Ankara-based team blocked him from representing the Nigeria U23s in official tournaments, including the Africa U-23 Cup of Nations, because they fell outside Fifa’s window for international games.

Now, nothing has changed as Fifa clarified in September 2015 that Euro clubs are not obligated to release their players to the national associations, meaning it is not yet cast in stone that Aminu will be wearing the Nigeria colours in Brazil.

Umar Aminu wants to play at the Olympic Games but Osmanlıspor expect him to resume pre-season training with the club around one month before the start of the competition.

Both parties hope to reach a compromise when talks are held in the coming days.

Onomah, Sonupe In Action For Spurs As Manchester United Win U21 Premier League

Tottenham Hotspur U21s returned to action on Tuesday in their final game of the U21 Premier League and failed to finish the game against Manchester United with a flourish, losing 3-2 to the Red Devils.

Spurs coach Ugo Ehiogu handed starts to Nigerian duo Joshua Onomah and Emmanuel Sonupe, while Dream Team VI winger Nathan Oduwa was not involved at White Hart Lane.

Donald Love and Andreas Pereira put Manchester United 2-0 up before Will Miller and Joe Pritchard leveled matters, and the game was heading for a draw until Guillermo Varela volleyed home the winner in the third minute of stoppage time.

Onomah, who was has 18 appearances for the first team of Spurs this term, was lively throughout the game but was not rewarded with any goal.

Following the win, Manchester United were crowned champions of the U21 Premier League, while Spurs provisionally occupy fifth place.

Granada Sporting Director Still Deliberating Whether To Release Isaac Success For Olympic Games

Allnigeriasoccer.com understands that Granada sporting director Juan Carlos Cordero is still deliberating whether or not to release Isaac Success to the Nigeria U23s for the Olympic Games in Rio, as things stand.

His decision is not straightforward as the striker could sever all ties with the Andalusian outfit before the start of the competition in August, meaning he will have to pass the buck to the player’s new employer.

Success, a former Nigeria U17 and U20 international, is widely regarded as one of the top talents in his homeland but is yet to kick-start his career at U23 level because Granada have refused to give their nod for him to travel to Africa when called up by the coaches.

Only last November, the Nigeria Football Federation replaced the 20-year-old with Victor Osimhen days leading up to the start of the Africa U23 Cup of Nations, with Granada playing hardball over his release.

The former Golden Eaglets star is being linked with a move to sister club Watford in the summer.

The attacking duo are likely to feature at the Olympics but the tactician says it will be business should they play against his team in Rio

Nigeria U23 coach Samson Siasia says he isn't scared of threats from Real Madrid’s James Rodriguez and PSG’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Dream Team VI will face Sweden, Colombia and Japan in Group B of the preliminary round of the 2016 Olympics men's football event and the duo have been penciled down to represent their countries.

"There is nothing to fear about Zlatan Ibrahimovich starring for the Swedish team and James Rodriguez staring for Colombia in our Group,” Siasia told Goal.

“These two countries already know their weak areas that they want these mentioned want to come and cover up. So they already have a team on ground.

"But we don't know yet because we are trying to put up a team that would determine which three over aged players we would want to bring. But Sweden and Colombia already know their grey areas.

"Those names like Ibramnovic and Rodriguez won't scare us. It is about the team not about an individual. We have played about bigger names before in competitions. We played against an Argentine team that had Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Huguain, Angel Di Maria and other big players.

“ So we are not scared about the names. We just need to put up a team that hold its own against any team, I mean a team that we can all be proud of?

"We need to think well on the over aged players we want to invite. I don't want to mention names now that later if those names are not there they will be so much disappointed,” he concluded.

Ndidi scores wonder goal in Genk win

By: Sammy Wejinya | 20 Apr | 22:58

Wilfred Ndidi scored for Genk in their Belgian playoff win over Club Brugge on Wednesday.

The midfielder scored a stupendous goal to set Genk on the way to a 4-0 win over Club Brugge at the Cristal Arena.

His effort in the 15th minute will be replayed on international television stations for years to come, and for all the right reasons too.

The 19-year-old smashed an incredible volley from about 35 yards out that left the Club Brugge goalkeeper, Ludovic Butelle, with zero chance.

Ndidi’s effort, which was hit with so much venom and power, was measured at 111 kilometre per hour and it is hard to imagine a goalkeeper who would have successfully kept out the swerving effort, hit with pin-point accuracy.

It was only his second league goal of the season following his strike against Zulte-Waregem on January 16.

I hope he forgives Chikatara for his attitude in camp. A lot of coaches want players that are ready to go through pain for their team to win.

I agree he should invite more players to camp. I think the full camp method is here to stay.

I hope Coach Amunike gives Solanke a call up. I feel a different coaching style might reawaken the sleeping giant in him.
