I must correct a notion. Studying radiography because it is a hot cake will not guarantee success.

We are where we are today, having thousands of unemployable graduates because they were forced to study medicine, law, or engineering. Ask most microbiologists, they opted for the cause because they were rejected in Medicine.

My point is this, instead of trying to cajole people to study a particular course because of its future prospects, parents and our educational setting should encourage children to pursue what they are passionate about.
Up until this point, I didn't know what radiography was all about. So as a recommendation, schools should have career days as obtainable abroad. This will open the eyes of students to the world beyond.

Louis Armstrong one of the greatest Jazz musicians once went for an audition and he couldn't sing past 2 sofa notations properly. He was told that he doesn't have what it takes. He responded by saying "nothing can keep me out". The rest is history.

The world is built is such a way that everybody has a unique role to play. We have spoilt our world because we have too many imitations. Be unique, pursue your dreams even when no one believes in you, because at the end, the world rewards and recognises those who are exceptional and unique.

I still don't understand how someone can write crap like this without no research whatsoever and present it as facts! Perhaps they are trying to prey on the fact that most Nairalanders don't have the capacity or the patience to verify such claims. To the OP, there are many Radiographers who are unemployed, just like any profession a person can have the qualifications but if you lack the people skills, the ability to deliver consistent results and a good work ethic, you'll find yourself unemployed faster than you can say 'jack rabbit'! Let's take the Nursing profession for example, I know many qualified Nurses that are unemployed due to negative work history, anything can happen especially in advanced countries like the USA or UK where one blemish is enough to destroy a career. So please whenever you present something like this try to let people know it is just an OPINION!

A radiographer allowed to practice by law is unqualified. Anyone in training is not yet qualified to practice and will likely engage in PP. I also mentioned X-Ray Technicians and other people who have worked around radiographers, illegally operating X-Ray machines.

Why would anyone be hoping to practice a profession s/he isn't qualified to practice. IS THAT THE NIGERIAN FACTOR!

Anyway, the word qualified could be relative. Are you qualified once you are a graduate or having gone through some professional trainings or probably registered with a regulatory body

1. Every profession has what is called hazard. Everyone who works regularly with radiation emitting machines definitely has radiation hazard to cope with. But let me ask. How many radiologists, radiographers or X-RAY technicians that you know has been affected by dangerous radiation?

For your information, it is very rare and many times non existent in real life. Radiographers know how to protect themselves. It is part of their course during their training. They have a course called Radiation Protection. In fact they are more protected than many of us who don't know the various sources of radiation, line of sight, exposure levels and harmful doses. So hardly will there be a radiographer that is affected by this hazard.

It is the members of the public who can actually be described as novices, when it comes to radiation protection.

On the part of radiographers one of their principles is what is known as ALARA principle. I leave you to research this :-)

I actually think he is incorrect. ABU offers actuarial science as a specialization under business admin and graduate students every year. I for one can recall knowing more than five grads from my time that have gone on to be certified.

Radiographers enjoy it while it lasts because Nigerians are about to flood the field . You know naa we like copy copy, now whether you love the field or not everyone wants to be a radiographer.

A Family friend radiographer once told me the amount he's paying his employed radiographer (who just finished from his kini kan training and is yet to serve). Or is it the salary of the experience Radiographer who works for him?

Radiographers can never be replaced by robot in the nearest future. The reason is because of patient care and uniqueness of individual procedures. Let me give you and instance; you may have a patient who just had an accident, still bleeding, under pain, unstable, unconscious, with spinal cord injury and other broken bones that would need immobilization, so how would a robot do such case?

Radiographers are not all fat salary earners. However, the opportunities to achieve your short term and long term goals abound.
The opportunities begin with recognition given to them. Notice how radiographers Youth Corpers are treated during the service year. They are most likely to be give accommodation by the authorities whether in the city or in a remote village! Even Doctor Corpers may end up having to fend for himself. Am not sure of nurses.
Other opportunities are from the fact that their services are perpetually in demand whereas the personnel are always few. Even where a lab technician or an expert radiologist is present, and they know how to carry out every diagnostic procedure, they MUST NOT carry out any radiographic diagnostic procedure unless by that qualified radiographer.

The cost of an education in radiography is the same as medical lab tech or science. The practice is guarded and regulated by an association of radiographers with a radiographers registration council. This means every radiographer is documented and licenced to practice radiography in Nigeria. This of course has resulted in a well protected profession in Nigeria and all over the world. Not all radiographers have to practice in an hospital environment. There are consultants, administrators, educators and other assignments to be taken up. All of this people MUST be licenced radiographers.
Radiography practice is also gender friendly and gender neutral. There is no bias often associated with engineering, aircraft pilots or nursing.

So while many are busy crying about job hunting, job insecurity waisted number of years searching for employment, admissions or traveling abroad just consider radiography, a profession often overlooked because it remains relatively unknown.

make no mistake brother, medical radiology is a specialty of medicine that still requires medical graduates to specialise and lead the radiography team, so stop painting it like radiographers(technologists) make it bigger than(radiologists)doctors.
