@gunther6, I believe the main reason why it is challenging for such profiles to get funding is most likely going all the way to a phd with your undergraduate. You might have fantastic test scores but I don't believe that is the main stuff they look at. I think there is a step by step process to everything. Even the Americans rarely take such swing to phD and even if they do, that person must be smart, and also remember you are an international student and they don't totally trust what you come with. Here you see many Indians who got above a 100 in TOEFL, and they can't even make a complete sentence so how did they get high scores in speaking? So those schools are top schools and you have people who have had masters degree gunning for same spot as you, so it's challenging. I don't know if this helps. Thanks, just keep hope high!

Thanks bro...funding is critical cos without it most Nigerians won't even consider studying in the U.S. but it seems to me that most people that didn't have enough funds survived one way or the other somehow though it was difficult. This gives a lotta people hope that one way or the other dem go make am in "the ame"
Yeah people survive without fundings if you say so. But lets be wise, atleast when you get to new place have something to begin with that's all I am saying. Even a chicken does not put both legs on the floor in a new place according to Niger parable. As you get to understand the terrain before what you have get exhausted, you must have atleast gotten to some point and your hopes will be high and well understood. Don't get into the plane with the notion that "people have survived" it will make you miserable because it's not the way you see it from Nigeria. Atleast a money for a semester or 3/4 of that so that when you are making claims atleast you have some deposit then you might have a few ears to talk to or think of the next step. But coming without anything is like running in the dark. Thanks. I wish you all the best, Thanks and remain positive, wisely.

Hello boss, am putting in for Ph.D Electrical Engineering and it appears South Dakota has a good Power Engineering lab. Can you assist with getting funding in ur school ?

I look forward to a positive response from you.
Sorry I didn't reply you on time. The department of electrical is pretty sound and I think they have some research works going on that's quite extensive. They work hand in hand with the computer science department so a little of both will help you a lot. Do you have a masters degree already? If you don't it's not bad but I hope you get admitted with a sound undergraduate. I inquired about the program it's really good and well funded at this point. Regarding fundings, you will be fine. If you have an undergraduate in EE and you already mailing some professors even if they don't respond timely, funding is like 95% guaranteed and there are other avenues to be a GTA as well. Thanks,I am available if you have other questions you feel I can answer. Best wishes for a great day.

i applied to university of arkansas, application under review since Feb2, till now no update. Graduate coordinator has refused to reply his mail

I called the administrative secretary, was reffered back to the graduate coordinator, April is almost gone.

I applied to one school since August 29 n till now, no decision. Tho I feel the delay is tired to their budget. At a point, even the grad cord said he appreciated my patience but I still gazz hold on. Grad cord, Hod, secretary, the graduate school or even current students via LinkedIn. One of these means shd get u some answers.

Like I ask people that decide to go for it, what's your motivation for a Doctorate in EE? funding? jobs?

Ofcourse the main attraction is my love for research.

And I do not have the financial capability to study in a country like the US without funding so the reason am pursuing funding.

Thanks

My profound gratitude goes to God almighty for making today one of the most important day of my life, he broke protocols for my sake and made my applications divine package and not agent package as some dude refer to it.
My visa was approved 6.30am appointment by a white woman in her early 40's (window 11) Lagos embassy. I was the 2nd she interviewed for the morning after denying the very 1st person. Dis is my transcript.

Me: How r u?
VO: she didn't answer
Me: was confused but kept calm
Vo: why Middlebury Institute (as she scanned my I-20)?
Me: Great international community and strong Alumi network.
Vo: shook her head
Me: started praying in my mind this time as she typed for a while.
Vo: Have u travelled out of Nigeria before?
Me: Yes
Vo: Where?
Me: South Africa
Vo: To do what?
Me: I was one of the 3 youth selected from Nigeria for an African Union youth volunteer corps training in Johannesburg.
Vo: what do u do?

Vo: what social injustice have u recognized in ur community and u try to find solutions to?
Me: Female genital mutilation (female circumcision)
Vo: By now, she got very keen interest in me
Me: I was saying in my mind today na today
Vo: pls tell me more about this
Me: During my Nysc days, a community in Kwara sate, Nigeria were found wanting still practising this evil act, which I found dishuman and violation against human right, which I was able to enlighten them by organizing seminars and training that brought an end to the problem.
Vo: How long is ur program?
Me: 1 month
Vo: U need more than a month for research, it's a lovely area of interest. Ur visa will be approved above ur stipulated time of studies, enjoy Washington DC.
