Don't forget we had regionalism then.

North had groundnut, SW cocoa, SE/SS had some coca, rubber & oil palm.

In fact all of Southern Nigeria had fairly similar things to offer. Oil palm or rubber wasn't scarce in SW either.

But no doubt federal income contributed to Lagos growth as National capital. Even though Lagos has been booming since 1860s already.

I think it was more about discipline & foresight of Awo and followers in the SW generally. Until Awo-Akintola stand off came about.

there was no federal income then.... regions contributed to the center Lagos was already developed before it was made the capital of Nigeria. groundnut didn't do anything for the north, the east was quite developed but their resources didn't boost it....

All the regions were relying on the SW cocoa, palm oil e.t.c. the east just had to be patient because oil boom was about to happen.... but they messed things up for themselves and the whole south.

So many south east asian cities were at the same developmental level with Lagos in the sixties - Bangkok, Singapore, Manila, Kuala Lumpur etc. They are all better than Lagos today in all ramifications.
Bad belle.

I see people saying the "whites" left us too early, this makes me feel many of us already admit we "blacks" do not have the mental capacity to develop our own. It's a big shame!!! How did Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia achieve their own development? By wishing the whites stayed longer? It's so bad we are where we are in terms of development, what's worse is that youths in 21st century still wish their 'WHITE' masters lord over them a little longer.

OPS please NOTE: THE PICTURES WITH THE WATER FOUNTAIN IN THE MIDDLE IS TINUBU SQUARE AND NOT TBS (TAFAWA BALEWA SQUARE).
FYI: The TINUBU SQUARE IS SURROUNDED BY SEVEN CORNERS NAMELY: (CLOCKWISE) 1) BROAD STREET. 2) KAKAWA STREET. 3) GLOVER STREET. 4) BROAD STREET (CONTINUATION ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE SQUARE GOING TOWARDS APONGBON AREA). 5) NNAMDI AZIKWE STREET. 6) ALLI STREET. 7) BAMGBOSE STREET.

I HAVE BEEN RELIABLY INFORMED THAT TINUBU SQUARE WITH ITS 7 CORNERS ALL CONVERGING AT THE WATER FOUNTAINED SQUARE IS A REPLICA OF A STREET IN FRANCE.

FOR THE BENEFITS OF ALL UNINFORMED RESIDENTS AND VISITORS ALIKE, LAGOS ISLAND IS THE REAL EKO AKETE "ILE OGBON" AS WELL AS THE REAL "ISLAND" BECAUSE VICTORIA ISLAND CEASE TO BE AN "ISLAND" SINCE THE DEMOLITION OF MAROKO, WHICH MADE WAY FOR THE NEW VICTORIA ISLAND EXTENSION TOWARDS LEKKI-EPE EXPRESSWAY THUS MAKING VICTORIA ISLAND PART OF A LARGER PENISULA.

SO FOR THE RECORD: ALL OF YOU BUBBLY GUYS WHO LIKES TO FLAUNT YOUR ABODE AS V.I.... cheesy cheesy cheesy LAGOS ISLAND IT IS. YOU CAN AS WELL CALL YOUR V.I... V.P. (VICTORIA PENISULA)... shocked

WHO WANTS TO START THE PETITION FOR CHANGE OF NAME? cool

White people developed the Lagos of old, not Awolowo.
After independence, Lagos changed from colony to capital. It was never under western region politics . in essence, Lagos was developed by whites and fed govt, with contributions from cosmopolitan Nigeria.
