Hard work is the way to go! My cucumbers are growing fine.. Thanks to all that has contributed to this thread.

I could not stake them because I was busy with something else (). I dont know if it will affect it much?, its already raining here.

I observed that any form of clay or sticky soil should be avoided, it inhibits the performance of the cucumber plants.

Don't plant more than two or even one seed per hole, Right now my farm is looking over crowded.

Working on the farm early morning is not so Good, large amount of the pollination takes place then, allow the insects do their job. (maybe, I dont really know)

Lots of male flowers did appear at the early flowering stage, I was worried, but later the female ones appeared. worries gone.

I planted two seeds in a pot as a test and I staked them, .. Result simply says , staking is the best way to go

Another experience is with fulani cattle rearers who just decided to let their cattle feed on one innocent farmer's plot. sad I used to consult for the farmer and there was no just way to control those cattle so she had to shut down her little source of income sad . So... If you have goats and cattle parading your farmland and it's not fenced, cucumber is not just for you

Thank u sir. The farm in the picture is located in the south-east. Owerri precisely. But I have other micro farms around the south-east south-south.
And concerning marketing, it was not easy initially. Majority of these crops are supplied from the north and displacing them in the market is a huge task. So what I did was make a high quality regulation on my product.
I also discovered that due to the long distance the northerners travel before they cab supply, their cucumbers come in stale and never fresh. So I made surr mine was fresh, juicy and nice before supply. I started by selling in retail to offices, schools and churches. Supply to those who helped me sell. I was very favoured in that aspect. But as the farms grew bigger, I had to find market women who come and buy in bulk at a reasonable price. Now, no matter the quantity I produce, it does not last the next day. Right now I sell up to 200k per harvest and twice a week. Don't underestimate those local market women. They struggle and fight for the products. A single woman can buy up to 20k a day for supply. It's not as profitable as selling retail but the money dey come sharp sharp cheesy

I have not posted on nairaland before so I hope I am doing it right. I like this cucumber thread I just stumbled on and I say a big thanks to the teacher. I am very new to cucumber farming. My mum sent me cucumber seed and water melon seeds which I planted about 12days ago. I saw some growth but I didn't know which one was growing until I saw the pictures you up loaded. Invariably all the ones growing are cucumber. Some of them are so beautiful while some appear stunted. The ones with stunted growth were planted under my plantain shade. I didn't know they will require much water so I guess I have to make provision for it. I am using a very small portion of land but I hope I will get something from it for my consumption.

Well, I have been postponing this for a while, just because I dont believe in "internet farming". But I feel the need to encourage other Nigerian youths out there who want to venture into agribusiness. Came back to Nigeria after University studies to invest in my country, it has not been easy so far to farm in Nigeria. The challenges have been enormous but *in Lil Wayne's voice* "we doing aite".
If I start my story, the epistle will be too long, so... I'll just get straight to the point.

I am a vegetable farmer. And farm majorly cucumber. I am pro-organic farming (it's very expensive in Nigeria). I employ technologies from around the world (especially thailand) that suit our climate and culture. I've been into this for quite a while now.

Decided to upload pictures of how I plant and the agronomy I employ in my cucumber farming. To get more ideas from the pros here and to excite the intending farmers. Just follow up

Oga Jasper I hail thee. are you still into cucumber farming? I am from Owerri Imo state. Is it late to farm it here? which Seed do you recommend and where do you get them? What's the cucumber market like in Owerri? What's the expected ROI per acre.

I will like to visit your farm. I saw you're from Owerri too
Cheers Boss!

NUMBER 2: LABOUR. From personal experience. My first farm was a small one (about one plot). So, I handled it myself, only hired labour when making the beds. I made 100K in 2 months. I was shocked! That spurred me to look for more land. But when I increased to 4plots, I hired workers (2 workers). I was expecting to make at least 400k or 350. But to my greatest surprise, I made 250k. And had to pay their salaries of 80k. (20k each for 2 months). I was distraught, I began to check for what went wrong and discovered 2 things about Labour in Nigeria.

1. An average Nigerian youth wants to be richer than Dangote but is not ready to work. Very lazy to the bones.

2. If it's not their fathers business, they are ready to collapse and destroy whatever you are building.

How do you go about securing your farms?
