Nice one. As a supervisor most of the eye service colleagues are already on the retrench list, just waiting to conclude the procedure. Lol those people are really burden to the company I tell you.
Don't retrench all, I keep one or two to use them when the need arises. Because one thing I have learnt over the years is the higher I have gotten I have little or nothing to fear from subordinates but Lot to fear from fellow senior managers. Now these senior managers also have lil minions they use to dig for durh or do their bidding so it pays to have yours who will listen in and brig such info to your table .

Its a wrong mindset when eyeservice seems to deserve more rewards than those that actually do their jobs well, BUT it is what it is. That's how the world operates everywhere.

However, I have noticed those who usually do their jobs effectively and efficiently DELIVER results in an organisation become almost untouchable. Their work/service actually speaks for them.
Most bosses know the value of an employee that brings in money to their organisation, and wouldn't want to lose such a person to competition.
Most mediocre people need eyeservice to stay relevant, since they don't have much to offer and these bosses know that. Once they begin to become a liability, they are dropped like a hot potato.

In every organisation in Nigeria, the love between supervisors and “eye service” is same as the love between Nigeria and fuel scarcity. If you can stop Buhari from coming to Nigeria as a “visiting president” then you can separate supervisors from “eye service”.

Except the GOD OF SHILOH is on your side, getting a job in Naija is like winning N10,000,000 from nairabet. It’s very difficult!!! There are alot of graduates in the labour market who have been job hunting for decades but are still unemployed; that’s why, the few who are employed, protect their jobs the same way Claudio Ranieri of LeicesterCity is protecting the English premier league title.

Finally, God has answered your prayers! You just got employed and as custom demands, the organisation would train you on her vision as a corporate entity and how you should treat her customers. But then, nobody will teach you about POLITICS IN THE OFFICE.

It is clearly written in the book of Matthew that, where 2 or 3 are gathered, there’s bound to be a PDP and an APC member, that is to say, politics in the office is inevitable. It has eaten so deep into supervisors such that they forget about the corporate goals of the organisation and they start chasing after frivolities.

A supervisor once said, “Subordinates who ask after my family and call me while am on vacation, their appraisal score must be higher than those who neither called me nor asked after my family”........can you imagine? How does calling one’s supervisor while he/she is on vacation, affect the goals of the organisation? This is a clear show of misplaced priority.

In most organisations, subordinates who are experts at “eye service” are always in their supervisors’ BOOK OF LIFE. They are untouchable! Surprisingly, these set of employees are not efficient/effective on the job; all they know how to do is, “eye service” It’s really painful to see hardworking employees being BLACKLISTED by their superiors all because they focus on their jobs and they little or no time for eye service.

During retrenchment, most supervisors are guilty of sentiment. They would submit the names of effective staff that are not so good at “eye service” and retain ineffective employees who are only good at game of “eye service”.......just imagine!!!

Although politics is part of our everyday life, it is ideal for supervisors to focus on achieving the goals of the organisation instead of being distracted by “eye service”. In the same vein, as an employee (a subordinate), even if you are extremely good on the job, and you hate “eye service” with passion, once in a while, play the game of office politics. Remember, you must PROTECT your JOB, because, it is easier for a CAMEL to pass through the eye of a NEEDLE than for a YOUNG GRADUATE to get a JOB in Naija.

As a director, all “eye service” seeking supervisors should be cautioned; else, this attitude would negatively impact on the organisation’s brand and profitability.

I can relate to that.

Office politics and eye service are conjoined twins.

I had thought work place is like school where brilliance and hard work is all you need to excel, it was a very wrong assumption that I found out the hard way.

You must mix in a good quantity of eye service to excel.

I was always accused of not "being loyal", when I had not flouted any company rules and my key performance index was above average.

Notwithstanding the fact that I bought drinks for "the boys" When the need arose, which was more often than not.
SMH.

Sometimes I wonder which is more difficult, finding a job or keeping a job, with all the office politics and eye services.

It depends on what the supervisor/manger wants. I do not go to greet my oga or ask anything personal, including 'how your wife body?'. No team members comes to me to say 'oga I just want to ask how you are doing'. It happens but it is who you are

While a little bit of eye service might be necessary once in a while, a certain time will come only your skills and proficiency at work can save you

I have never been able to do eye service, it irritates me. Do my job and relate well with colleagues. I don't see anything wrong in asking after one's boss though.
Some people even have PhD in it, the perfect nice, hardworker when the boss is there and even rush to do odd jobs for the boss, even though after all the eye service they would lead the team of gossips.
