South Africa's Economy Falls To Third Behind Nigeria, Egypt by PaulJohn1: 11:30pm On May 12, 2016
South Africa just lost its spot as Africa’s second largest economy

Once the largest economy on the continent, South Africa’s domestic and political issues have seen it fall to third place behind Nigeria and Egypt, KPMG has warned, using data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF ).

Even though South Africa remains the “continent’s most developed economy, and has a more diversified economic base than the Egyptian economy… its fall from first and now second place amongst the continent’s giants is of great concern,” KPMG Financial Risk Manager Christie Viljoen said, adding “especially as this development is largely attributed to weakness in the rand that, in turn, has largely been as a result of domestic issues”.

“South Africa has been known as the continent’s second-largest economy since Nigeria rebased its gross domestic product (GDP) data in early 2014. However, the IMF World Economic Outlook (WEO) released in mid-April provided more sobering GDP statistics for South Africa. Not only did the multilateral organisation suggest that the South African economy would grow by a mere 0.6% this year, but also that the country is now only the third-largest economy on the continent behind Nigeria and new silver medalist Egypt,” Viljoen said.

“Nigeria’s rebasing exercise some two years ago revealed that the oil-dependent economy was almost twice as big as previously thought. The country’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) ensured greater measurement of the informal sector, the inclusion of 46 industries from a previous 33, as well as methodological changes to measuring service sector activity with the rebasing.”

“Backward adjustments to GDP indicated that Nigerian GDP in US dollar terms surpassed its South African equivalent in 2011. By the end of 2015, Nigeria’s GDP was measured at $490 billion compared to South Africa’s estimate of $313 billion,” Viljoen added.

In February is was announced that South Africa attracted the largest amount of start-up funding ($54.5-million) and was the most favoured destination (36%), according to the African Tech Startups Funding Report 2015. This placed it ahead of Nigeria, the continent’s populace country with 170-million people, with $49.4-million, or 24% in investments, and Kenya with $47.3-million (14.4%).

South Africa breathed a sigh of relief on Monday when credit ratings agency Moody's MCO -0.17% left the country’s rating unchanged at Baa2 – but with a negative outlook – after months of fears it would be downgraded to junk status.

This followed the unexpected firing of finance minister Nhlanhla Nene on 9 December 2015, which saw more than $6,6 billion (R100 billion) wiped off government pensions. This was revealed this week by Daniel Matjila, the CEO of state’s pension investment arm, the Public Investment Corporation (PIC), in response to questions in Parliament.

If you look closely at that chart you will see that nigeria's economy started taking a downward slope from 2014.
Who was president then? Its not even jonathans fault. That was when oil started freefalling. It was literally out of our hands.

Its actually reflects in real life, but it is limited to about 1% of Nigerians. That's why we produce the richest in Africa, and the highest number of Africans living below poverty.

Nigeria need to get power supply sorted as soon as possible.
With power, we can actually give China, India and the rest a run for their money.
We cannot do it the south Korean way. What Nigeria can latch on to is outsourcing in manufacturing( especially textiles), IT services, telesales and customers services.

For those trying to rewrite history, the Nigerian economy started falling apart the day Jonathan got into power.
Below is is a line chart and a flow chart of how Jonathan grew destroyed the Nigerian economy

one percent my foot. A broke person living in soweto lives a better life than that billionaire that lives in lekki. The sowetan has 24hrs electricity, water, good roads from his door step to wherever, and all the other amenities u can think of. A lekki billionair only has comfort in his house by atleast using generator to power his house, drilling his own borehole for water and thats about it. Once he drives out of his gate with his bentley he must drive on the bad roads in lagos, get stuck in traffic jams for hours. Etc. Naija is messed up

Nigeria has the largest economy in Africa because it's the most populated.
I'm sure if GDP per head is calculated, we won't even be in top 20 in Africa

The graph really shows Nigeria's over reliance on oil. If the price of crude oil rises, our economy rises... In 2008, the price of crude oil fell, in 2009, the price in increased... 2014, the price fell.

We desperately need to diversify, the life of over 180 million people can't be tied to crude oil

We know that cabals are getting trillions of naira from the subsidy that's why they have power and money to funds millitants so that refinery will not function at optimal level.. is not easy to rule nigeria..

Really?

But look at the reversal of the curve for Nigeria as it deeps towards the end of 2015.

At the rate of that negative slope for Nigeria South Africa and Egypt will overtake us in the next 1 year!

A broke person in Soweto lives in poverty, often times around drunkards, habitual drug users and criminals - those who have been abused at home, mistreated at school and probably victimized by the police.

And no, they do not have constant electricity, partly because many of these townships are informal settlements, there's no way of metering many of these homes, additionally South Africa has its own energy problems. Nor do they have constant water supply.

Besides, all those things cost money so how does one without money pay for services that cost?
