Am sure u can see the sun reflection and d lil shade left for the pig to hide during the day. Lesson: ensure construction is done to face direction away from direct sunlight.

My 10kobo advice to those who wants to go into piggery. I have been reading the comments here for sometime. But I think I should put in my advice now. Some comments here are hilarious and do not depict reality. However I will try to list somethings that I think should be done.

1. A pig farmer is first a cost manager, if not your expenses could run beyond ur plan and u cant stop at that point.
2. 80% of ur time should be spend to drive down the cost of ur feed. Research online for chepeast source of food and combinations that gives best yield.
3. The greatest challenge you will get is cheap source of protein for ur animals. Remember even humans in nigeria do not have enough protein not to talk of animals
4. Start small. This can never be over emphasis. It is not about ur cash availability rather it is about learnings. You definitely need to learn. But why do you want to learn with ur entire cash. The man that wants to start with 25 sows you need to watch it. Do u have enough experience to handle such. If 25 sows gives birth to average of 5 that gives you 125. Do u have d experience to handle such numbers. When they turn to grower cost of feeding will nearly drive you mad. Also without experience u may loose majority of them.
5. Go to a training school or do attachment somewhere. You cannot leave ur business in the hands of some other people who will tell stories that touch the heart because you dont know. Lagos state government had a 3month training school in oko oba that is not costly but allow you to manage it with ur other activities.

6.specialise in pen design. Cost of construction of pen is also one of the things that drives farmers mad. Go online and research cheaper method of construction buy picture books online that teach DIY they are readily available just Google it. Amazon used to deliver books to me in nigeria some years back and they are very cheap 18dollars or so and it gets to u withing 3wks. Do it yourself cos cost is important. I saw the pen design posted by someone that is a costly way to build pig farm. Imarging if you have 2000 animals how many of such will u build.

7. To manage cost or to be efficient and get rich thru piggery requires you to run a large pig far. Cos the energy and time invested in running a farm with 200 animals will not be much different from running a farm with 2000 animals but the cost saving different is huge.

I hope I have made a bit of sense with this my posting. Remember ur goal is to be an elite farmer not backyard one.

Hi Fellow Farmers,

From my researched, i noticed lots of pig farmers, dont use nipples, alot of them still pour water on the floor for pigs to drink,

We all know how important water is. It is the most essential nutrient to any living being. Without water we would not be able to grow, develop and survive. Water plays an important role for your pig. It helps with the digestion and movement of nutrients through the body as well as acts as an agent to help maintain body temperature.
Over 50% of your pig’s weight is water as well.

alot of this water carries, bacteria and are very dirty, from my research.. this harbor grow and create worms.. which slows the grow of pigs.

In conclusion, your pigs need fresh, cool water. If you wouldn’t drink the water, don’t expect your pigs to!

Pigs is one of the closest animals to human, give them clear water , always using a nipple

For those interested in getting nipples email me ( deji@fulfillsa.co.za) , i have 60 in stock to sell at N1,500 each

Click on the following on water requirements for pigs http://www.ncsu.edu/project/swine_extension/healthyhogs/book1995/almond.htm

Value of water : http://nationalhogfarmer.com/nutrition/don-t-forget-water-s-value-pig-performance

sir please am in need of this drinking tips. I need about 10 pieces. how do I get them sir. thank you for touching lives on this topic.

Happy Sunday to you all.

You guys are going a great job educating, experience sharing and marketing. May the Lord cause you all to advance and have productive farms IJN.

A friend advised me on pig farming and I visited his farm at oke aro, iju axis in lagos and I appreciate the business and saw an opportunity in same.

I need some help since I want to procure a pen at the pig farm at oke aro.

1) please what are the relevant documents I need to ask for when buying the pen at oke aro?

2) please what is the process for registration with ministry of agriculture.

3) I plan to start (advised by my friend) with 70 growers, 15 about to cross and 1 boar. I hope it's not too much.

4) staff issue. Please what attributes do I look out for when employing a staff. What Knowledge is required by a staff?

5) vet. My friend as a vet. I want him to come on board to help treat my proposed pigs. What information do I need to determine how effective and professional the vet is.

6) I need advise on farrowing crates. My friend doesn't have a farrowing crate and he has 105 weaners. I read in an article that farrowing crate is important. How true and where can I get one.

Please I need your replies soonest as I will be purchasing the pen on Tuesday. Many thanks as I anticipated prompt and helpful response.

I've read this post from beginning to the end and I must confess I've learnt so much. Thanks to those who started it and all contributors. [colo
Please are there any pig farmers based in Abuja or mararaba area of nasarawa? I'm developing a farm and will like to visit a pig farm to see how it works before I start. I'm also curious to know how these drinking tips work. Does it have to do with running pipes in the wall?
Please someone should educate me. cool

Hello all,

1) Is anyone willing to share the average monthly growth rate they are getting for their pigs? We seem to be getting between 4-7 kilos per month which i think on the low side. I know a lot of factors come into play e.g. qualilty and quantity of feed, breed/genetics and overall management.

2) Do colleges and universities offering agriculture as part of their program give their students opportunities to go do internship on farms besides school farm? Why i am asking is that we are thinking of the possibilty of getting such students to come work on our farm and from that practice generate a pool of future tested employees. Do such program exists in the frist place and has anyone used student employees? if so, we will like to learn from your experience.

Thanks

Good day Pig Farmers.

I am trying to figure the cost of feed and housing to fatten 20 castrates to 70 Kg.
Based on 4% of body weight as minimum feed requirement, and feed costs at =N=60.00 I am coming up with =N=2,222 per head is that correct?

I also calculated that 3 grown pigs can share an 8' x 8' space to finishing. Will that be correct?

What should be a farmer's expectation profit per head on a fattened pig?

Thank you for your answers.
