Since Oranmiyan left Benin in anger for Ife leaving Owomika his son, it has been father to son, no contest in Benin. The practice was taken to other places in Delta state. The Yoruba are not like that. Any Yoruba kingdom contains thousands of eligible princes who can contest for the throne. The Oyo used to be like that by having an Aremo but it was stopped when some Aremo engineered the killing of the Oba. Then the Yoruba Obas are like errand boys to the Ogboni. Sango's elder brother was removed for being weak, Sango was appointed, he later was banished by Gbonkaa, then he committed suicide. The Ogboni reappointed his elder brother. In Yoruba, the Ogboni rules while the Oba is just the one they are using in thesame way the CIA rules the US today. there are things the government will not dare do!! can you imagine this press statement coming from the British government over the throne of England? there are battles you don't fight & this is one of them

The government can try this or even revoke the so called licenses of some traditional rulers but not a first class king like that of the Benin.

The government might not get to survive the consequence of such action, if they attempt to do that to the Benin kingdom. it might be a phyrric victory for them.

Remember sultan of sokoto was removed by abacha but all then military adminstrator of Edo state could do was suspend the Oba from the Edo state traditional council, not to remove him as Oba!!! nor be u put am there

there are certain sites that have been designated by U.N. & some government as "cultural sites" there is no amount of development you want to do that will make you go destroy or temper such sites! that's respecting history & cultural values

on the other hand, things are changing, if the traditional rulers don't uphold those values that they have always been known for, then the government might have the guts to try such & might get away with it cos the people will not care (cause of their anger towards the ruler)

The OBA is Loved and extremely Respected, all he had to do is tell the People not to Obey the Governor or to Close the Markets and stage a peaceful Protest and everything will be on the Lock down, even the Police and Security will first listen to his OBA before listening to the Governor. I dont know about others, but that is the type of Respect the OBA of Benin commands amongst his people. I know a lot people Abroad here that will also Rush back home to Join. Once you understand how much the people Respect and Love the OBA, then you won't say that a Governor can Dethrone... He might not even last cos even his closet aid might Poison his food or drinks...
