Lagos – The Russian Ambassador to Nigeria, Amb. Nikolay Udovichenko, on Saturday announced that the Nigerian and Russian Governments plan to sign an agreement for the establishment of a multifunctional scientific research nuclear centre in Nigeria.

Udovichenko, who disclosed this in Lagos at this year’s Alumni Congress of the Soyuznik Alumni Association in Nigeria, said that the Nigerian and Russian governments had been negotiating for the centre’s establishment.

The theme of the congress was “Harnessing The Potentials of the Nigerian Graduates of Higher Institutions of former USSR States”.

“Bilateral cooperation between Nigeria and Russia is blessed with huge potential in every avenue.

“Nuclear energy development is another area with good prospects for our two countries’ cooperation.

“This June, we expect to sign a bilateral agreement for the establishment of a multifunctional scientific centre in Nigeria,’’ he said.

The Envoy also said that his government was working at reactivating its Trade Representation in Nigeria, to further promote trade and economic relations between the two countries.

Udovichenko, who said that thousands of Nigerians had over the years benefited from quality education in Russia, also announced his government’s plan to sustain the scholarship programme for more Nigerians.

The Envoy said that it was imperative for such Nigerians to use their knowledge for the development of their country, as well as strengthening ties with the Russians.

President of Soyuznik and Chairman of the ceremony, Otunba Henry Ajomale, said that the association was made up of academicians, medical doctors, engineers, diplomats, political administrators and heads of professional organizations trained by the Russian government.

Ajomale expressed the gratitude of the beneficiaries to the countries that formed the former Soviet Union for bequeathing a lasting legacy, with which they could contribute to the development of Nigeria.

“We should not forget to celebrate our common heritage as beneficiaries of a unique programme by the former Soviet Government that gave us the opportunity to become what we are today,’’ he said.

The Soyunik Alumni Association of Nigeria, is the association of Nigerian graduates trained by the the Former Soviet Union and Commonwealth of Independent States(CIS).

Let's say NO! to nuclear.

We lack the capacity to handle it and most seriously it could be hijacked by a group against the other.

Our plurality does not warrant it.

I trust this govt to quickly sign that death warrant. They are in a hurry to look for what they will list as attracted investment, even if it is clear that we lack everything needed to accomodate a nuclear facility

I don't think we are ripe and well mature for a nuclear centre! An agitation can cause one stupid mofo to blow it up and the entire region or city where it's been located it's gone. Imagine boko haram using it as a test point for an RPG

As long as it is established in Daura, Abuja, Lagos or Kano.

SS/SE will never allow Russian on our land with nuclear weapon.

Buhari can only arrange for nuclear station in his northern region not another man land.

I feel insulted whenever someone says we can't handle nuclear plants. Nuclear energy has been harnessed for about a century now. Those that do it do they have two heads?

This is absolutely a bad idea,Nigeria doesn't have the capacity nor technology to handle nuclear technology sad
In the case of a nuclear plant meltdown, this country will surely not be able to curtail it,we will make Chernobyl and Fukushima look like an ordinary event angry

And in a country like Nigeria that is badly plagued with tribalism,no ethnic group will want it to be established in their land, and if the government tries to build it on their land they will cry discrimination and might even attempt to destroy the project.

On a last note if Russia wants to offer us any aid,it should either be in supply of arms to fight terrorists or TOMATOES(Russia is the 11th highest producer of tomatoes in the world,Nigerians would really appreciate it now lipsrsealed )

ON BEHALF OF ALL NIGERIANS I SAY NO TO NUCLEAR PLANT IN NIGERIA angry

People just say what they like,
We are not ready for a nuclear power plant?? Lool but we are ready for hydro and windmill

Nuclear is the only reasonable energy source to power lagos, u have lots of water and enriching uranium to 10% to 20% isn't rocket science, yes there are risks but not worst that a gas power plant believe u me
This is cheap and clean energy sources

rot in hell, nigeria can handle nuclear energy. Niger delta does not represent the entire country. We are trying to get off oil and on that note we must welcome every alternative. Even anti-matter would not be ruled out at this point.

Those that did it has one head but Nigeria has no head at all.

A country that has crude oil but imports it's by-product is definitely a headless country.

A country that can't produce ordinary toothpick even with all the timbers In Its domain and you want to catapult right away to nuclear energy?

You haven't even attempted to harness solar energy and you want to jump into a trampoline and fly right away to nuclear energy abi!

The type of News emanating from Nigeria seems more like a comic relief, Sounds more like a bedtime lullaby!

It is just a nuclear research facility so make una relax. I'm sure most of you against the idea didn't read the article.

The radioactive materials that would be handled in the facility would be too small to cause any damage- perhaps it might not even be up to 1kg, neither would it be weapons grade- so make una just chill.

Nuclear technology has a lot of application in the fields of medicine, energy/power, space exploration, etc. It doesn't always have to do with weapons. It would be hugely beneficial if we developed our capacity to manage the technology.

To all those already insulting the president over this, your comments demonstrate nothing but a dangerous level of ignorance by those who won't hesitate to call someone else an illiterate. wink

Anti-matter?? Haba baba, don't run faster than ya shadow na! grin

Not even the Russians or the eggheads at CERN fully understand anti-matter yet, let alone transferring the technology. Nigeria is probably a hundred light years behind in the acquisition of anti-matter technology. cheesy

Good news but Can Nigeria be able to maintain it? I pray it will be a private and not a government thing.

Buhari is really working.

There is a saying that whatever is built by Russians can only be managed by Russians. If you are building a sensitive infrastructure like nuclear without any plan for technology transfer then.. (O I forgot, we are already RULED by confused people)
