Ogunsuyi is a Yoruba name. Her parents may live in Benin.

Edo people bear yoruba names like ojo, balogun, adeleke, akerele etc. It is common my friend. Ooni of ife's wife where is she from? And what name does she bear?

Etinosajay:

Seankay say what you know

Edo people don't bear segun or ayo or ajayi.

You people keep spreading this lies and assumption even when you have never step a foot in benin.

The only possible case is by marriage. An Edo man marrying a yoruba woman or vice versa. Both parents will give whatever name they like.

To say that an Edo person goes ahead to name his children in another person's language is to say you're an imbec.ile

I don't know how you people can live with yourselves spreading such lies.

Edo people bear yoruba names my friend. Seankay just educated you and u refused to be teachable. Ogunsuyi can be from edo as Obasuyi, Omoruyi , Osawonyi etc. Balogun, Akerele, Adedeji, ojo etc are names answered in edo including all the names mentioned by Seankay.

You tried. You're whack. Go copy a funny line from a Yoruba dictionary abeg.

Seems like your local cheerleaders left you to your demise.

Stop spitting at me, foolish boy. What does Ogun mean in Edo?
almost all traditionalist in benin city proper have ogun diety in their backyard. Ogun is highly worshipped in edo hence the popular saying "Ogun a gbu eh" ogun will kill u.

Re: Ogenyi Onazi's Traditional Marriage In Benin City (Photos) by Jonwesley(m): 5:40am On Jun 17, 2016
Let the argument of she being Edo or Yoruba end by this my analysis:

Ogunsuyi is typically a Yoruba name, but it can be borne by any person depending on what the parents choose even when the parents may not be Yoruba. Okay?

Then the fact that your roots is Yoruba but you resides in Edo state does not make U Edo also. But the surname of a person matters alot to his origin anyway.

Now the Akoko-Edo area up to owan axis are mostly migrants of Yoruba, the same can be said of some parts of Kogi state - Okun etc, and they are neighbours to Akoko LGA of Ondo State.

Finally, you are from where your state of origin in Nigeria says, not where your roots is from. So if you are Akoko-Edo by origin, you are from Edo state.

Therefore the lady is most likely Edo.

I'm sorry I came late..

So far, the Yoruba have not been able to tell us the meaning of Ogunsuyi.. I believe we have credible Yorubas on NL who have turned a blind eye too, so for their sake and the benefit of the general public we would turn this thread into a teaching thread.

The first point is that most people do not know the difference between Edo, edo state, benin and Bini.. edo originally referred to benin kingdom and people who speak the edo (Bini) language. Benin is the headquarters of that kingdom. Today the whole sate is known as Edo state, meaning Bini,Esan, Etsako, Akoko-edo, Owan, Igbanke, and other smaller groups with their distinct languages are all Edo people. So next time you say Edo man you could be referring to lots of people, but a Bini man is a Bini or Benin man (though he's found in other LGs too )

The verb "sē" means to surpass or to be greater than, or more important than something else. Our people have always borne names comparing two subjects, as if they were trying to prioritize them. For example;

Omosefe. meaning child is greater than wealth
Omosigho. meaning child is greater than money
Osasuyi God is greater than honour
Obaseki The OBA is greater than (the) market / trade
Oviasuyi Ovia is greater than honour
Omosuyi. A child is greater than honour
Osasogie. God is greater than the ruler etc

Finally, Ogun,Osun (osunematon) , Ovia , Okhuahe, Orhiomwon , Olokun etc are deities worshipped in Edo land. There is even ongoing controversy concerning the origin of Ifa - Oguega (Iha), that's another issue. People also bear names reverencing these deities, that's where Ogunsuyi falls in. Others are:
Oviasuyi Ovia is greater than honour
Igbinosun. I run to / embrace Osun
Igbinogun. figure it out
Ogunrobo - Ogun is my doctor
Izevbokun
Igbinoba. I run to/ embrace the OBA
Ogunsefe - Ogun is greater than wealth

We would not have been having this discussion 25 years ago, because our fathers travelled more than us, majority of whom have never gone west of sango-ota, names like this were commonplace and seun wasn't born then. But christianization has forced many to change their names especially to
Igbinosa ; I embrace God, from igbinogun, igbinosun, igbinokun etc
Ijesurobo ; Jesus is my doctor, from Ogunrobo
Osasuyi , same as the above
Osasogie etc

Thanks for watching

Yes to the highlighted. The Edos answers that name (the one with S). Take note of the S and T in those two names.
Some other time the S could be substituted with R.

But it's also a household name in my town oh. I even have relatives bearing that name.
It's pronounced as omasuyi in our place

Actually it's a Yoruba name and it's also an Edo name with different meanings. Both cultures have Ogun in their traditional religion.

You are so ignorant. Back in the days up to the late 80s and early 90s, almost all house in Benin has Ogun (God of iron) in their backyard.
Same with Sango , olokun, Esu . Edo and Yoruba worship exactly the same thing traditionally.

My dear. You need help

You live in your cave and assume that the world revolves around you.

Shame on you and people that reason like you.

Etinosa is a local government in Lagos. is Etinosa a yoruba name?

There's no local govt in Lagos bearing etinosa. Its Eti- osa which means "river bank". Just to clarify.
Both languages do have similarities though.
However, I wonder why a thread on someone's wedding became a tribal issue.
That's the case always on NL
