JOIN THE BRITISH ARMY. A few jobs have been opened up to commonwealth applicants, and the Army is currently bending over backwards to recruit people from ethnic minority backgrounds.

8. The likelihood of you been sent to a ''warzone'' is very negligible. Only special forces are in Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan. You will be surprised though at the number of soldiers who actually volunteer to go to these zones.
..

This is actually false. Soldiers get deployed to warzones. In fact, the less educated you are, the more likely you're getting deployed (front line).
And yes, applying immediately you get here automatically makes you a soldier. I can't remember if it was the navy or army representative that told me that you can't join as an officer without being a UK resident for 5 years.

The military wants your skills. If you don't have any, they would give you one out of the few options they have.
If you're interested, contact them to ask questions about positions available before applying.

One of my mates from ivory coast who decided to quit uni after the first year and join the army (He's already got a British passport before joining the army).
he was earning over 2grand a month and free accommodation and all that. After about a year and few months He quit the army aswell cos according to him it a as too tough lol and carrying a backpack and doing about 20 miles or even more on training days. Which he could handle but as soon as he noticed he was about to be transfered to a war zone country he quit and currently he is applying to join the police force

Yes, soldier do get deployed to warzones, but the British Army hasn't been involved in any war since pulling out from Afghanistan. Moreover, the jobs open to commonwealth applicants are not front-line jobs, they are all support roles. I don't think I mentioned anything about being an Officer in my write-up, this is soldier roles only. I have done my time, nothing to prove here. It's up to people to make an informed decision based on the information provided.

It's best for someone who wants to join, get the passport, and leave to pursue a dream career outside. There are some people who end up liking it and continue in it for years.

This article about what the Naira Floatation means might interest some people. https://aguntasolo.co/the-price-club-the-new-nigerian-naira-6e9613715acb#.7kac7w1v8

When I came to UK for my masters, I didn't go through all this stress to get my visa. It was an easy, straightforward process because it was all handled by the scholarship body.

PS: Thanks claremont for your tips. I'm gonna give the Kodi TV thingy a try this weekend, though I only have a Chromecast

Oh don't get me wrong, am just trying to supplement your wonderful post with more information. Most people do not really know the difference between the various posts and career paths of the army and this information would be most useful to those who might down the line, decide to continue with it after getting their passport.

Also, am sorry but I have to correct you once again, front line jobs are very much open to commonwealth applicants. Maybe those I know are just exceptions

The jobs listed on the link I posted are not front-line roles. https://www.army.mod.uk/join/commonwealth_joiners.aspx. The people you know who are on front-line roles might have joined a few years back when those roles were still open to people from the commonwealth. Infantry soldier roles are no longer open to commonwealth applicants.

In addition to what have been said up there, you will definitely get part time jobs to keep body and soul together so far you are not been selective and you go to church or mosque regularly. Speak to your church members, they will show you the way.

Having said that, Uk is not the best place to come if your plan is to stay back. Honestly, why would students pay £11,000 and cannot stay back for at least a year or 2 to get job experinece? what is the benefit of coming and spending that huge amount? There is no need deceiving ourselves (most people want to stay back at least to get experience), if your plan is to study and stay back, bro please try Canada (although Canada's visa process is much more difficult than that of UK).

Don't get me wrong, UK is lovely, peaceful, i have never heard a gun shot here in my life and all that (i won't lie to you, i love UK) but i feel they are just exploiting students currently. If you will not be attending at least the top 30 schools in UK, studying at least a very well sought after course (please not business or art related courses)with a good result, the chances of staying back here after school is very very low except of course you will proceed and do PHD (that is what most students are doing now). Infant what the home office wants is just for you to come study and go back.

Here is the deal, if your father is rich, then UK is good for you cos within 1 year, you will finish your masters and go back home(you probably already have a job waiting for you) but if you come from an average family and you don't want to come back to Nigeria (at least not after your masters) you can do masters here in UK and apply for another masters in canada or even USA while in UK. It will cost you another money but it is easier to get a Canadian visa here in UK than in Nigeria (this is based on my own empirical evidence). In canada, after your masters (usually 2 years, you will be given another 2 years to work which you can use to gain experience before coming back (let me whisper to you, it is even easier to get canadian PR than Uk PR currently if you want to go this route)

So bro, look around you, most young guys now in Niaja have a Uk masters. What will stand you out is the job experience you will have after study. can you get it here in Uk? well, pray very hard.

Alternatively, if your mind is made up on coming to UK, then you can be doing volunteer jobs while studying so as to gain work experience(you will likely not be paid) or during your masters here in UK, start applying for internship programs in USA. There is really no point getting masters abroad without job experience (this is my opinion).

Finally, some people still get jobs after their masters but it is becoming very very difficult day by day and i just have to be honest with you bro. All the best.

As an undergraduate student coming to UK, i will strongly advise you use your first 3 months in facing your studies squarely. The reason for this is your main purpose for coming is your studies and getting a good grade is the best which will help you later on in life. every other thing i discuss here are just jobs to pass the time, make some few bucks and survive as a student. The main goal is to be making billions in the future.

As for the SIA badge, any student can do it. If you are masters or undergraduate does not matter.

As for transferring money as a student from naija to UK, honestly i do not know how the current set of students are doing it. If i get anything useful, i will post it here.

other jobs you can do as a student...... let me talk about cash or side jobs

kpeke (i don't know if i got the spelling right): This job is mostly done by benin and delta guys here in UK. They stay in pub or club toilets and will be selling or offering the guys who come to the toilet to have a perfume sprayed on them for a token. If you happen to stay in a busy pub or club, you can be making about £500 pounds monthly and the club or pub owner will still pay you stipends weekly.

Barbing: bro can you barb? if you can, i can assure you that you can be getting at least your bus pass money monthly if you can barb well. when i was in Nigeria, i am sure Teebilz had nothing on me when it comes to regular shaping or haircut but since i got here, i barb only once in a month. You can be barbing for your fellow students for a cheap price.

Electrical works and painting: These are also cash jobs if you know how to do them well. My bro wanted to paint his house of recent (a 3 bedroom apartment) and he was charged £320. When he told me, i said lets check youtube and paint it ourselves. So we ended up doing it ourselves.

Minder: This is a job for females. You can be taking care of people's children for a fee. Trust me, people are looking for minders like mad here in UK.

All the jobs i mentioned above is not all but that is what i can say for now.

How would you get customers for the jobs? For someone who has nobody here in UK, the church is the place to be. That was why i advised you to go to church every Sunday once you arrive in UK (be an active member). Once people start seeing you regularly, trust me, you will start getting connections.

Please all students coming to study in UK, please note, it is almost impossible to get a job that will pay your school fees. I always advise students to have their school fees guaranteed before coming here . You can still survive here trying to get a job that will pay your accommodation, bills and other stuff but not fees.

1) As soon as you arrive and settle in, get a National Insurance Number. You can't get a legal job without it.

2) My friend told me: that I have two main tasks in UK. Focus on getting a good degree, and focus on getting a good job. And both of them will consume my time a lot if I wanted to be successful in both.
During my first team (Sept - Dec), I applied for more than 30 jobs across several sectors in UK. Every weekend, I would spent between 6-12 hours going through tons of company websites and applying through many of their recruitment portals. It's not an easy task, believe me.

3) Due to the migrant restrictions, not all companies can hire non-EU nationals. I learned to focus on only the companies that have Tier II visa sponsorship certificates. The UKBA or Home Office has a list of companies with that privilege.

4) I subscribed to several services that inform you of vacancies and job openings. I used "gradcracker" and "milkround". Join them and setup your profile to receive regular email alerts about jobs/internships that you're interested in. I also attended as many job fairs as I could. Mainly to talk to their reps about their companies, if they hire foreigners, how their graduate schemes are, etc...and also to collect lots of free pens, jotters, flash drives, etc. wink

5) Timing is important. Most of the top companies start recruiting for graduates around August - Jan, to start the next September/October. So if you start your masters in Sept/Oct, you can apply to many companies before your first term exams begin in January. The best time to apply is before December, cos by then you'll be neck-deep in schoolwork, preparing for exams, there'll be less hours of daylight, and the winter darkness and snow will easily get you depressed.
These companies recruit while following the academic calendar. After first semester exams in January (or in December, before exams), they start calling for interviews and assessment centres.

6) Being in the UK for the first time, the urge to travel around and flex and have plenty of fun is strong the first few weeks. I remember being jealous that many of my classmates and colleagues and fellow Nigerians were having parties, flexing, travelling to new cities etc. That time is better spent applying for jobs if you really want one.
I remember once when I went to London for a December interview, and got back to my school close to midnight, to attend a birthday party that was almost finished. By March, I had secured a job...6 months before graduating. Since I started that job, I have travelled a lot across UK...much more than some of my former classmates then.

7) Practice aptitude tests until you can do them with your weaker hand while in a drug-induced orgasmic state of unconsciousness. Practice, Practice, PRACTICE!!! If your job application is accepted (and if you're a STEM student), you'll definitely do several aptitude tests, both online and physical.

cool

If I think of anymore tips, I'll add them.

PS: I see some people bashing General Shepherd for being negative about UK. I don't think that's fair. Statistics show that he is correct. If I had my way originally, I'd have gone to US or Canada for my masters. UK keeps making it harder for EU and non-EU migrants to get jobs and settle in. The main advantage that UK has is that masters is just one year, and admission is very easy to get. PG education is a huge source of revenue for UK. They attract you with easy admission, charge you outrageously, rush you through in as short a time as possible, and then find ways to make you get out as soon as possible. The latter half of my masters was very stressful, and if I was still busy applying to jobs and going for interviews, I might have collapsed.

Cheers

My candid advice to any student studying around Scotland area (Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen, sterling etc) to apply to pmp recruitment and transline, both recruit for Amazon in Dunfermline and in Gourock.
I survived last year BVN wahala because I couldn't cash money from my account again. it was the time I got this Amazon job. The pay is really good and attractive.

Very good question. as at now 01:04am (19/06/16) exchange rate on Oanda is 1 naira to a pound is 281.568. I will suggest that students should try and wait till next week and see what happens and monitor the exchange rate on Oanda for at least a week (also the new system employed by CBN would have been in play).

Then after a week of monitoring it, you will get an idea of how much to put in the bank. I will suggest that students add at least another 500k extra to the money that will be put in the bank because anything can happen within 28 days.

I strongly believe that the exchange rate value on Oanda cannot exceed 330 (this is based on my own forecast).

A friend asked if it's not too late to pay the tuition around July, and hope there's still time.

Waiting for your answers guys.
