Exactly my thoughts...people should look beyond APC/PDP ish. These self-serving looters want to turn themselves into gods.

I laugh when I hear people saying APC PDP. It's not real. What is real is power. People who are ready take it. They wear whatever cloth they need to wear and grab the power and rule.

Many posts here on NL will be point that the cloth is Green or it is Red. You, you will remain on NL. Them they will continue to hold onto power and buy jeep....

This action cannot be let to stand by any means, this is setting a dangerous precedent. Buhari will NOT be the ONLY president, other presidents will come after him, we cannot let this happen. For once, Nigerians should unite and fight against this stupidity, this is why they have separation of powers. Today the power of the executive branch is been sought to be removed, tomorrow will be the judiciary, which means anything can/will happen and Nigeria is screwed.

The present constitution we've today is illegal.
It was created by Northern military thieves.

We need a new democratically-created constitution!

I have tried hard, but it has proved impossible to rationalize the destructive mix of ignorance and partisanship represented by the comment above.

If you had read the report, or at any rate, if you had had it explained to you by any five-year-old in your neighbourhood, it would have been apparent to you that what those thieving louts in the senate propose is not an attack on Mr. Buhari himself, who you may not be particularly fond of; it is a less than subtle affront on the principle of checks and balances, which ranks among the principal pillars of democratic government.

Your elected representatives have put the cutter to the marble, chipping stealthily but steadily at the very foundations of the Constitution they swore to protect, and you say that you are loving it. How well do you imagine you will love it two years from now when, emboldened by the ignorant support and constructive complicity of idjits like you, the National Assembly ensures that the presidential veto is gone altogether, along with section 69 of the constitution as it now stands, and any other provision which presents an obstacle to their unbridled avarice?

Ah. Just as I thought. You haven't the slightest idea what section 69 is about do you? Do you have any idea what anything is about? Are you so blinded by your own bias that you do not know it when the rug is being pulled from under your feet and those of your children?

I don't understand this.

Re: Senate To Strip Buhari Of Power Of Assent by DEOLINX: 3:58pm On Jun 20, 2016
Whatever comments I passed here is based on the concern I have for my children. I am actually also worried for the level of intelligence of some people on this platform whose future is being mortgaged away by very few people in this country while they dance to discordant tunes of tribal and political sentiments from people who have obviously concluded that many Nigerians are stupid.

At one time during the discourse on whether the Calabar rail project was presented or not, the Senate argued with the support of some people on this platform that they saw 59 billion floating in the budget and appropriated it to their constituency projects....(very well known to be their pockets).

Instead of people facing the substance they were busy abusing the president for wasting time and Amechi for lying...many did not condemn the act of the South South Senate for allowing this to happen.

Presently, the Senate operates their own Salary and allowance structure, their tax structure is not the same as the ones being applied to the me and you simply by tampering with the definition of what allowance is taxable and what is not.

Many corruption cases thrown under the carpet and these people behave as if they are in a separate circumstances that we are not part of.

Last week, it was arguement over sharing jeeps as against Peugeot. And now, they are gathered to to discuss constitutional amendments that affects them with clear intentions to secure their futures and that of their children while no-one will be able to challenge them and we are all arguing amongst ourselves?

A case of forgery for any other citizen is criminal but to them is witch-hunt that may lead them into impeaching the President for trying to uphold the rule of law they all swore to protect?

To kill everything, they want to ensure the President cannot stop them from whatever they cook up later by telling us they will amend the existing constitutional provision just like that?

I pity this generation....if we ever allow this to happen.

I'm in support of this move.

In a presidential system of government, the power to give effect to constitutional amendments should lie squarely on the National Assembly and the state Houses of Assembly, like it's done in the US.

A man/woman shouldn't have the unilateral power to decide when an amendment takes effect.

Even the US president, who you mentioned, has no powers to veto it.

The President is also a representative of the people.

the senate is a place where decisions can be made through dialogues and debates and where reason can defeat sentiments, imagine one bloody man discarding the confab reports?
The Roman senate and the Greek senate comes to mind where leonidas have to give concrete reasons why he should be given soldiers.
I dream of the day the senate will summon president and make him tremble, summon ministers, police, military personnels and security chieves and make them shiver before the people's representatives.
So in my opinion, greater power to the senate(people)

Correct. People forget that it is only the president and VP that the entire country vote for. No other position. So he represents the people as well. The framers of the constitution wants power to be checked. Reason why the president can veto. The believe is that most change that will be generally acceptable to 2/3 members of NASS and 2/3 of state assembly will unlikely be vetoed by the president. The constitution also provides for the veto to be reversible by the legislature. So indeed, they actually have the final say.

are u from mars?in nigeria the president is like a god and we always depend on his mercy.
If he is foolish we all suffer for at least four years and funny thing is most of our presidents have been foolish and anti-people.
So let the powers of the executive be reduced so much that an a minister will be better than him.
Its better to give more power to 109 senators and 360 reps than to one man whose decisions can crash Nigeria
Re: Senate To Strip Buhari Of Power Of Assent by Nobody: 6:07pm On Jun 20, 2016
his argument is that since this is the only bill that requires 2/3 majority approval from both the national and state house of assemblies, it makes a mockery for only ONE man to have the power to veto such approved bills

Indeed he has a huge point as one man cannot be greater than the entire people..

some opinions r so clouded by hate n sentiments,,since u've knwn NASS wat gud av dey brought us...since saraki got d sit r there bills dt av bin pass dt favour d masses,,or u think life pension n impunity is 4 d citizens.. we ddnt vote saraki n is vice to the sit dey occupy but my vote n nigerians vote brings presidency dts whr d power shuld stay.. presidency is d only representation of nigerians nt those self centered thieves

I don't understand this.
Why so serious and feeling giddy over what I already knew is brewing up? Why the lectures when you fail to educate your leaders on the importance of rule of law and respect for human rights in the face of judgment in a law court which Buhari is flagrantly violating? Why write me an epistle when you are not blind to see that Buhari is running a rudderless government. So you know section 69 this much and you are not as well familiar that the current constitution is under review which may tamper with Buhari's autocratic tendencies. I am never a fan of this 8th Senate headed by Saraki (those who know me here will tell you that) I am only surprised at your myopic attributes in the face of deep matters. Leave it or take it, Buhari is heading for the rocks except he face the nitty gritty of the matter - run a people-oriented government and watch everything fall in place. Be wise and stop being cunning and emotional.
