That's an amazing field of study. In public health there's great demand for researchers, data analysts, statisticians and people who can efficiently carry out field research involving population and household studies.

Those in the field of monitoring, evaluation, measurement and learning are usually statisticians, skilled in the field of population studies, demography and development studies.

There are other disciplines that are beneficial to public health practitioners, such fields are Gender Studies, Development Studies, Health Planning & Management, Health Economics the list is endless.

You can become a specialist in data collection, mapping and designing of data analysis tools for field based research surveys.

When public health practitioners in NGOs want to measure the level of impact their health projects have in addressing it's intervention strategies, they call in researchers who are in the discipline you mentioned.

So if that's where your interest lies, then carry on.

Excellent contribution jaci02

@ deedav

Public health in general hinges on population studies. And when you talk of population, demography and statistics must be involved to properly describe it.

Public health is always studied in the population parlance.

This is just something I wanted share with all of you. Considering how important it is obtaining a higher qualification in Public Health like the MPHs and MScs, it would also be of tremendous benefit If for all of you, if you also consider Volunteerism.

Public Health Practitioners are not just people with big "MPHs and PhDs". They are first and foremost Humanitarians who pride themselves in putting their passion for the better health of others first before profit. In other words, "Passion before Profit ".

There are many ways you can start your career in Public Health, but one sure way is by volunteering in organizations, local NGOs, civil societies and even orphanages.

You can join a CBO or a CSO, you can promote little projects for youths and adolescents in schools. You can as well visit the nearest Primary Health Care Facility around you and see if they have any community group association supporting them in which you can be part of.

We need to look beyond the classroom and the universities because sometimes experience comes before certificates in acquiring certain jobs in Public Health . One thing about public health is that no matter how little you begin your career, you will keep going higher and higher.

So everyone look around and become interested in what you're studying not just for the certificate, but most importantly, in PRACTICING it now before your dream job comes along.

It would give you an edge, believe me.

I think it is. Why delay if you have it?

Transcripts should be forwarded the moment you submit your application, and should reach them before u hear back from the Pg school

Hi, I'm about rounding up my Bsc in Statistics with Computer Science from Uniben. Being a part time student, I had the opportunity of working for 2 years with an NGO in Benin promoting women's reproductive health. After that I did a short consultancy for PPFN in Benin.

Working with NGOs involved in the public health sector is very interesting as you have the opportunity of learning on the job and in the field. With policies and rapid population growth, this is becoming an evolving sector where skilled professionals will be needed in great demand.

There are so many possibilities so I encourage everyone out there, as much as you're concerned in making an impact for a better world, get into the public health sector and see where your impact will be felt the most.

That's very false my friend. I used to think so until I got admission in one of the best schools in Nigeria in Public Health and I'm not a doctor.

These categories of public health entrants (social workers, psychology graduates, science graduates) are equally as relevant as the doctor in ensuring good public health.

Furthermore, there's a stream for doctors in public health, like clinical epidemiology, those are one of the few areas that requires a medical degree for entrance.

Field Epidemiology,
Medical statistics
Health Administration
Environmental Health
And many more streams are open to graduates from diverse fields with proven interest and intellect in tackling public health issues.

You would best consider

MPH in mental health

Or

Global health

Get a copy of postgraduate prospectus of the school you fancy and read up their requirement and prepare yourself in that light.

If you have more questions, you can ask here

This thread is to bring ideas, information, advice, discussion, direction and achieving a common goal for prospective public health professionals.

Firstly, I'm starting out my career in public health. That's 110% decided. I have a bachelor's degree in the sciences and a relatively sound knowledge of research.

Public Health is an enormous discipline which is open to everyone irrespective of their originating academic background, towards achieving a safe and planned public health.

In Nigeria, public health is mostly available at a higher Cadre of learning, starting from the masters degree setup, so I have found out. FUTO however has programme for undergrads.

The university of Ibadan, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), University of Lagos are example of schools with Public Health Department which award degrees in Public Health. Entry requirements vary between these schools, so be sure to check the admission requirements of these schools to guide you in your decision making

As I'm starting out my own career, I will not have all the knowledge to pass along, therefore I urge experienced public health professionals operating in Nigeria and elsewhere to post valuable contributions to aid prospective, entry level, mid-career and top-level public health professionals here
pleasant evni Etinosajay, u av really touched many souls with dis ur observations as regards to d next level of education. U re blessed sir. I didn't say MPH was better than MSC. They are one. The focus of study is what is different.

The MPH is the degree direction professionals in public health practice would go for, while the MSC route is the direction public health researchers would normally go for.

So it depends on what your interests are.
And again, MPH is not restricted to medical professionals, there are steams like medical epidemiology reserved for medical professionals, same thing in MSC.

I do not know much about the program at Unilag, bbikaz can advice you, as she's currently doing her program there.

If I knew what two options you're referring to, I might be able to offer one word or another.

Hello all, I have a first degree in economics but I want to take up my career in public health. Through free certified certificate courses I am gaining Knowledge in nutrition, reproductive health and Family planning, global health,HIV/AIDS- malaria- and tuberculosis as regards maternal health and a couple of others. Mainly the basics.
Question is: would these afford me an opportunity to work in an NGO as right now I can't afford MPH?
Sorry for the long typo. Thank you N Blessings!

Yes, it would. Certificate programs are good options for starting your professional career in public health.

After getting your certificates in the areas you have mentioned, apply for volunteer to some NGO's for experience, even though you can also get paid jobs. The choice is yours.

With 2-3 years experience in public health, you can then apply for MPH being qualified by experience.

We've talked so much about a lot concerning public health, here on this thread.

You can read it up, and also ask questions that may not have been answered yet.

I and others would do our best to provide guidance according to what we know.

@ Etinosajay, thanks for d good work U are doing on this thread. God bless you richly.
My job brings me in contact with practising public health professionals that are working with UNICEF, WHO, CHAI etc. And I have since resolved, that by the grace of God, I will do my best to be counted among these professionals.
The job can sometimes be stressful but it is fulfilling if one has passion; d pay may not be as huge as that of a Chevron staff but it's very OK if one is not greedy; and depending on d organisation U work for and Ur job schedule, the exposure can be priceless.
